ok I installed my auto dim mirror from a 08 CTS (no airbag light) and everthing seams to be working correctly. But I have a question.

Does ANYBODY know that that box with the wire going to it on the base of the peddisel is? The guys at the dealer (where I work) couldnt figure it out, and the online tech manual doesn't say what it is (even though it is illistrated) Best I can figure is its a light sensor, but be damned if i can figure out what for!?!

compass was always outside (never have seen it inside) otherwise every time you turn the mirror (for a better view angle), the compass would be off.

well the CTS mirror I replaced it with HAS a compass, but doesn't have this same "box", nor did any of the other half dozen GM cars that where in the shop...

I think your right, and the compass was put there on this mirror because its a manual mirror and there wasn't room inside the main unit for it (cause of the lever)

with an autodim, there it plenty of room for it in there.

Im sorry, but your wrong, the mirror WORKS perfecty and accuratly shows direction..

The only compass mirror I recall without box is the one which has a circle in the middle, kind of like the picture below.
But I don't like those ones as they dim too much up to the point that you can't see anything behind you even if there are no blinding lights.

and another thing, why would it matter if te mirror moved a bit (not 100% fixed) you would have to move it 45* to get it to show the next reading and if you do that you wouldn't see the face anymore anyway(if they even do move that far), AND the mirrors are SELF CALIBRATING.

I am pritty sure the box that goes on top of the mounting bracket is the compass itself. I actually want to replace my mirror also but since you gyes are saying that that stupid airbag light has no purpose i will get the mirror without the light

I just checked. 2008 CTS don't have compass in the mirror, it's in the speedometer.

I still need to modify the wire channel of the G8 mirror that goes into the headliner to fit into the CTS plastic. I just need to chop an inch or two off the end and put it back on.

I got mine out of a wrecked Silverado! Everything looks identical except the phone button on the stocker is a white dot on the truck piece. Ebay for 50 bucks I think...:)

just re-use the G8 plastic wire cover, it fits perfect (its teloscopic) :wink2:

The wire cover DOES NOT fit on this mirror. The circuit board piece is above the mirror on the one I have and the factory piece does not fit. I have to take the top half of the stock piece and cut it down to fit on this mirror. I wanted to swap circuit boards from the G8's to the CTS mirror but they were different sizes and had different connectors.

thats weird, my CTS mirror didn't have the external circuit board, the G8 plastic fit without a problem.
