Is anyone else experiencing a transmission whine 50 mph and above in sixth gear only? Manually shift to fifth and it stops. Looking for responses to show Pontiac my GT is not the only car with this issue.

Yes - I have it too - I asked about this a couple months ago, and the consensus is "they all do that"

Will it go away if you decelerate? bet it does...

Will it lessen if you accellerate briskly in sixth? bet it does...

I think they all do that.

Service Fix
6th Gear whine at approx. 110kmh
VE, WM, V8-6L80E 6Speed A/T
Group 7B Ref. No. TL 1637-0806

CONDITION
When the vehicle is cruising at around the 110km/h in 6th gear, a very high pitched noise may be heard. Once the speed either increases or decreases outside this speed range of 100km/h to 120km/h the noise seems to go away. The frequency at which this peaks is 1240Hz.
This noise is only heard whilst in 6th gear.

CAUSE
The transmission mount upper plate rigidity and mass has been detemined to have a large influence over the transmissibility of the 6th gear mesh frequency into the body structure.

CORRECTION
After verifying that customer complaint vehicle has condition as described above , proceed as follows:

1. Thoroughly clean the surface of the top bracket on the trasmission mount with Prepsol, then dry the area.

IMPORTANT: it is essential that all due care is taken to ensure the components which are used for the adhesion of the weights are perfectly clean prior to fitment of any weights.

2. Apply 140g of stick-on wheel weights to the top LHS of the bracket. (Refer figures 1&2) if weights need to be stacked on top of one another, ensure that the top surface of the weights are also cleaned in the same manner as above.

This additional mass will eliminate the frequency at which the top plate emits the whine condition. DO NOT attempet any other method of mass attachment, other than that stated above.

Figure 1. Location of weights to fitted, snown from above.

Figure 2. Location of weights once fitted.

DO NOT REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION for this condition;
it will NOT rectify the fault!

WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION
Description Apply weights to A/T mount
Labour Op. No. J000830
Time 0.5 hr
Failure Code J0040 Noisy

that's interesting! however, up to this point pontiac doesn't acknowledge that there is 6th gear whine in the g8 automatic...so there is really nothing i can do.

Same transmission, same transmission code. You can show your dealer this information and ask them if they can perform a similar service for you. Can't hurt to ask...

copied from that thread:

"Re: SSV UTE auto noise in 6th gear how many have it?

The dodgie bush mechanic fix is just temp until a new trans mount is designed.

The wheel weight method works, but i have noticed that 140g is not always required depending on the trans.

Have seen 140g put on a trans and it didn't work, 20g were removed and it worked 100%, no whine at all.

A bit of trail and error is required unfortunately."

"If the plate is welded to the underbody of the car and is resinating a high pitch noise at one particular speed, sounds like to me that the mounting plate is missaligned. If the plate is removable I would ask for a replacement, have it lined up as best as possible and then check shaft angles from the gear box.

Sticking the weights on 'one side' will thicken the over density of the metal soaking up harmonic vibration, just like when putting your finger on a sheet of metal which is virbating and emitting a noise, the frequency of the noise will change or even disapear etc...."

and it's also stated that the whine is in the manual 6 speed as well....something for the GXP owners to look for.

It's worth very little. You'll be luck if they checked your tire pressures like they were supposed to.

Well, that all depends on the outfit that you bring it to. If it's a place you can trust, and that always performs proper work and is honest, then he should be OK.

Contrary to what seems to be popular belief, there are good service departments out there.

There are very few techs that are going to check the trans fluid on a car like the G8. We had 35 or so techs at the Ford dealership I was working at, some of the Fords have the same setup. I can guarantee not a single one checked the fluid in that situation.

Tires and brakes are checked in hopes of finding a problem. A simple glimpse under the hood checks the rest of the stuff, pull any dipsticks out and you're done. 30 seconds under most circumstances.

Maybe with it being slow now people are paying a little more attention, but I'd venture that a flat rate tech is a flat rate tech most everywhere. Not to say there aren't techs out there that don't do it 100% properly. Just good luck finding one.

I have the whine too. If it is just transmitting normal noise, not some noise caused by some problem in the transmission, it doesn't seem so bad. I guess I could ask for the weights trick, but the noise isn't very loud at the moment. Noticeable, just not very loud.

Has GM come up with a real fix for this yet? I suspect they are going to ignore the problem.

Check the TSB section. Appears our "fix" is the same as that old Aussie bulletin.
