: First 888
DevilYellow 11-18-2007, 10:23 PM As discussed previously before on this forum ...
You know, eight is an interesting number.
http://www.g8board.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=211&stc=1&d=1195446199
It’s the first positive number in sequence that is divisible by three other numbers: 1,2 and 4. It’s two-cubed, or 2x2x2. Lay it on its side and it’s the symbol for infinity. In some Eastern cultures, 8 is considered a lucky number.
Throw a “G” in front of it and it’s a kick-butt performance sedan…and that brings us to our topic for today.
We’re only a few months away from G8s cruising the highways and by-ways of North America and we thought it’d be kinda cool to do something special for those intrepid souls who are already in line at their local Pontiac dealers.
So, we’ve created a limited-edition of 888 of the first G8s celebrate the launch of Pontiac’s new flagship. These vehicles will have a unique Vehicle Identification Number sequence (001 through 888) and will also feature a special integrated IP logo that designates the lucky owner as having one of the First 888.
The First 888
The First 888 will be among the first cars shipped to dealers early next year, so they should be among the first cars on the road.
Now, we’ll be honest with you. Not every Pontiac dealer is going to have a First 888 G8. With well over 2,000 dealerships, the numbers just don’t work. But, for those dealers who are eligible, they will know their individual quantities by the end of the month or sooner.
So, if you don’t already have your local Pontiac dealership on speed-dial, this is a good time to start programming. Eight just might be your lucky number.
chiefpontiac 11-19-2007, 08:19 AM Actually every eligible dealer (estimated to be about 700 only) should know today if they are getting one or more of teh 888. Alll other dealers and these as well can know on Wednesday Nov 21 what their entire 2008 model year allocation is. My dealer actually anticipates zero G8's, yes I said 0. They have struggled with the Grand Prix this past year and still are seemingly stuck with a final run GTO.
mike c 11-19-2007, 10:53 AM No G8's for my dealer will mean no G8 for me. I can't beat the deal he gives me.
Cool_Hand_Luke 11-19-2007, 06:16 PM My local dealer is clueless as usual about what is going on.
southern_takeover 11-19-2007, 07:42 PM spoke with my dealer today over the phone he said they should be in by the 1st of the year...He also took my name and number and said he would call a few weeks before getting them in...
Lets just see if he keeps his word!!
need4spd 11-19-2007, 10:32 PM spoke with my dealer today over the phone he said they should be in by the 1st of the year...He also took my name and number and said he would call a few weeks before getting them in...
Lets just see if he keeps his word!!I wouldn't count on the call, with only 30,00 cars per year, and 2200 dealers or so, thats an aproximate average of 14 cars (some dealers more, some less) per year per dealer (ie 1 a month). :judge:
Also, based on everything else indicated, the first of the year isn't acurate either, maybe late Feb, to mid-March is more like it.
PMD G8 11-19-2007, 10:45 PM I decided a long time ago that if I get one, then I will order it just like I did with my GTO, unless there's one sitting on a dealer lot exactly like I want. I'll just be excited to see some on dealer lots and hopefully get to test drive one, even if it is a V6.
ecetim 11-19-2007, 10:59 PM I'll be test driving one to compare to the Goat alright, but I just can't really fathom going down in performance - even if it can fit more rubber which would be nice.
And so the first 888 are going to have a number. Nothing other than a number? Kinda lame if you ask me
southern_takeover 11-20-2007, 12:04 AM I wouldn't count on the call, with only 30,00 cars per year, and 2200 dealers or so, thats an aproximate average of 14 cars (some dealers more, some less) per year per dealer (ie 1 a month). :judge:

Thanks for bursting my bubble:whine:
pinski 11-20-2007, 08:58 AM It would be nice to have one of the first, but.. I want a manual. That's non-negotiable as I've dealt with slushboxes for far too long! When the first M6 vehicles start coming ashore, I might start looking to buy one.
mike c 11-20-2007, 10:20 AM Also, based on everything else indicated, the first of the year isn't acurate either, maybe late Feb, to mid-March is more like it.
You won't see them until end of March, possibly later depending on Geographic Location.
PontiacFan 11-20-2007, 10:33 AM Yesterday i called up my local Pontiac dealer they told me they will start taking orders in January 2008 and they should have prices by then. So i am hoping to get mine by early March.

I think Pontiac did the same thing with the Solstice. Just a way for dealers to introduce the car and an attempt to justify them placing a huge "Market Adjustment Value" on it.
"This is one of the first ones ever built. It will be worth more in 40 years!"
gartht 11-20-2007, 12:19 PM I love the look of the car and it has great reviews, but I would like to drive one before I place an order. Maybe it's just me but I hate to order one and then not like the way it looks or handles once I receive it. 30K is enough money that I want to make sure I like what I am buying.
southern_takeover 11-20-2007, 06:32 PM They have pricing now, it is on edmunds.com, also they are placing their first orders on 11/21 fyi.
How does ordering work?
Sorry if its a newbie question but thats exactly what i am...This is going to hopefully be my first car purchase if the timing works out...
Is the ordering a contact to buying the vehicle or can i change my mind...any negotiations as far as monthly payments or anything?
And where can you place the orders?

You can't special order one. Here's what GM Dealer Assistance told my fleet manager:
When I attempted to place your order into the system it rejected. When I contacted my GM Dealer Assistance contact I was informed that GM does not intend to have the US dealers place specific orders for this model as we do with domestically produced vehicles. Instead GM will determine the build specifications then produce vehicles for the US market and ship the vehicles to a US port for distribution. The US dealers will then draw from this pool of assembled vehicles. This is similar to how the Pontiac GTO distribution was handled when that model was in production.
Initial production is currently scheduled to take place in the first quarter of 2008 so we may not see product on the ground at dealer sites until sometime in the Spring.
I am not sure how this will affect our ability to acquire a vehicle that exactly matches your preferences. On that basis I am reluctant to accept your order and deposit until I know that the prices are static and that I can actually match the specifications for the vehicle you want out of the product that is made available to us.
BWinc 11-20-2007, 09:16 PM Don't you hate it when they won't take your money?
davefr 11-20-2007, 09:32 PM Don't you hate it when they won't take your money?
In this case yes, because he quoted me fleet pricing and was ready to special order one for me!!
ttamrettus 11-20-2007, 09:47 PM I am so ready to go buy something else. (poor information and the March 2008 timetable are killing me).

Thats funny b/c I ordered my GTO, along with alot of other GTO owners on LS1GTO.com
need4spd 11-20-2007, 11:35 PM Thats funny b/c I ordered my GTO, along with alot of other GTO owners on LS1GTO.comAren't the dealers picking thier cars tomorow? Can't they just select the pre-built that matches your order, that is what I was led to believe.

The allocation process is a bit of a mystery to me, and seems like we hear different things from our different dealers. Mine told me they would know on the 28th exactly what they were getting in when, so I've got an appointment to come in after that to see what's available. But my initial understanding was that they would be placing selections today, and seems like if that is the case and they're hearing back next week, they'd want to talk first to pick a selection close to want those of us who are interested want. I figure I've waited this long, so the constantly being a couple of weeks away from knowing I may just be getting used to...
gartht 11-21-2007, 08:18 AM I might wait until the 09 model comes out. This reminds me of the housing market a year ago. Stand in line with a wad of cash and if they pick you number, you are entitled to a car. It's starting to get frustrating.
need4spd 11-21-2007, 09:24 AM Also look at this thread for more details on distribution of the G8, to me, the power of 8 is going down:

I know I do.
I can run my local dealership 10x better than them.
They know nothing about GM or its products.
J Wikoff 11-21-2007, 03:48 PM If you look at Pontiac's site, they've got two pics that show the First 888 logo in the car.

I also noticed they added "fine print" at the end of the "build your G8" screen. It reads
"Not all vehicles configured may be available. In these cases, your Pontiac Dealer will attempt to provide the closest match possible to your custom configuration."

PMD G8 11-23-2007, 01:27 PM I just got back from the Pontiac dealership where I ordered my G8 ("First 888 G8" edition)!
Do you know what your getting? Color/Engine?
Attorneyguy 11-23-2007, 02:23 PM I ordered the G8 GT with the Gray Metallic and black/red leather interior. I also ordered the Sport Package so I'm getting the 19 inch summer only wheels (so basically I got every available option, since sunroof is not an option on the first 888). I live in Cleveland so if my car arrives in early March, it's possible I may not be able to drive it home if there is a snowstorm!
The dealership told me that it was allocated just one of the first 888 G8s, so I'm their only "First 888 G8" customer. Good thing I placed my order.
I got it for MSRP. I tried to push for a discount but they said straight out that they would not go below MSRP for the first 888. On the other hand, this shows that they are not charging a premium for the first G8s...
gartht 11-23-2007, 03:24 PM Are you eligible for GSM pricing or know if they are going to honor it? I don't want a 888 but just a regular G8 GT. If they are limiting the amount of cars a dealer can get, they may not honor the GSM.
Attorneyguy 11-23-2007, 06:44 PM My nearest Pontiac dealer was allocated one "First 888 G8" vehicle and four additional G8 vehicles as its initial allocation. I have the GM Supplier discount through work plus I know someone who works at GM, but the dealership said they would not go under MSRP for the first G8 vehicles that they receive, regardless of who I am. They said they will be able to find customers who are willing to pay MSRP for those initial vehicles (if not more if the demand is really high). My final price, including the $150 "tagging fee" that was added for getting one of the first 888, was $31,995. I'm happy. A couple months ago I was worried that the MSRP of this car for just the base model would be above $32K. So Pontiac came through. Now the final few months of waiting...

Wow, thats nearly 2,000 less than what I paid for my GTO. :ohsnap1: One thing that hurt the Auto GTO's was the $1,000 Gas Guzzler tax. It's nice to see the G8 doesn't have that attached to it.
Attorneyguy 11-24-2007, 08:52 AM The dealer called me first thing this morning and asked me whether I had an alternative choice for my "First 888 G8" selection. I want the magnetic gray metallic with the black/red leather interior. The dealer said he wasn't sure if Pontiac was making the first 888's with black/red leather, and even if they are he is not sure he can secure one. I told him that if he could not get me my first choice that he should get me one of the next batch of cars, which he said would be arriving SIX WEEKS after the first G8 arrives...
davefr 11-24-2007, 09:19 AM My dealer told me there are only 4 color options with the 888's. (I don't know the specific colors but black is one of them). I doubt the red/black interiors will be avail. with the 888's.
The obviously want to keep the initial build as simple as possible.
jaywestfall 12-24-2007, 03:28 AM Spoke with the folks at Ernie Guzman, and the 2 they have been allocated are one each red and black. If you absolutely have to have the first of the first, expect to pay a markup above MSRP around $3,000 to $5,000. They are just as frustrated as we are about the "ordering" capabilities they have. They seem to be even more in the dark than we are.

Good news A guy. Perhaps mine won't be over $34K then.
2+ months to go.
Sun Dog 12-31-2007, 02:37 AM Any word on how much GM card $$$ they will allow you to use on a G8?
GigaHz 12-31-2007, 05:12 AM Looks like $1000.
edfiero 12-31-2007, 07:31 AM And why would there be a limit on how much of the GM Card "cash back" that you could use? I've never heard of them limiting that before. If I can't use my full 3,000 that I've got, there will be no G8 purchase anytime soon.
GigaHz 12-31-2007, 07:38 AM Each car is different. I am pretty sure my GTO was only $1000. My Grand Prix was $2000
miamio096 12-31-2007, 08:37 AM It depends on which card you have. The old blue one and I think the gold have an unlimited amount (limited earnings per year though), if you switched the platinum (unlimited earnings per year) then you are limited to the amount GM specifies for each car.

I think you are right. I have been a GM Card member since the mid-90's. They limit me to $500 in earnings each year, but when I bought a Corvette in 2002, there was no limit to how much I could redeem...up to the card program maximum which was 3500.00 I agree it seems like the newer cards don't limit you to $500 per year, but do cap the amount by car.
SRG963 12-31-2007, 10:59 AM The dealer.....next batch of cars, which he said would be arriving SIX WEEKS after the first G8 arrives...
For ever ones sake on this board, I hope your numbers are a little off. I've read that the regular production cars will arrive at the same time, or very shortly after words, not anything close to 6 weeks (oops). I want a sunroof, so I'm waiting for the regular production G8GT, and I've heard mid Feb to the beginning of March for availability.
I wish us all luck on a speedy delivery:boink:

Ramsesiii 12-31-2007, 04:38 PM My local dealer is getting 4 First 888 GTs. I'll take a gander when they arrive. As soon as they get there, I'll be getting a call. Of course, I'll probably keep going back every few weeks to make sure they remember me :p
I won't be putting any money down though, pretty much guarantees that I'll have to pay more for it. I'd rather haggle :p
Cool_Hand_Luke 12-31-2007, 05:04 PM I got the screwing of my life. About 2 weeks after I bought my GTO the wife got a certificate for $5000 off on GTO. I was mad as hell for about 2 weeks.
$1000 off is better than nothing.
Ramsesiii 12-31-2007, 06:43 PM I'm going to try to get it for 24000 - 26000 after down payment, trade, and any incentives (conquest) if any at all. I'll offer em 30,000 flat without incentives.
Cool_Hand_Luke 12-31-2007, 07:16 PM $30k is a very reasonable offer.
Ramsesiii 12-31-2007, 07:18 PM Really? Perhaps I'll offer 28,000 then ;)
Cool_Hand_Luke 12-31-2007, 08:35 PM There you go.
Make the salesman sweat and swear. Then, when you get to a number throw on GM Card cash and any other incentives going one.
Ramsesiii 12-31-2007, 09:44 PM The last guy they sent after me at the local dealership was a newer guy. He was ready to demo the car; and I already tested it plenty all around at the various dealerships. My research was done. I came ready to deal.
So I spit out my offer. He resisted a bit, so I told him to just go tell "the boss."
They sent another guy out, probably the guy who was training him. Someone who was privy to the type of deal. They do the 4 corners thing there, where they write down a buncha crap on "deal sheet" that means nothing to me. I only see the end dollar signs.
In the end, I think the poor guy lasted about a week before he went on his merry way. Now I've got a guy who's excited about selling the first G8 at his dealership. Perhaps I'll give him the pleasure, but boy I won't make it easy!! ;)

Sun Dog 01-02-2008, 12:44 AM Looks like $1000.

I just got an offer rounding up my appr $1000 in earnings to $2000. BUT, and its a big one, expiration is 1/31 and the G8 is the ONLY 2008 GM vehicle excluded from the offer.
DevilYellow 01-03-2008, 10:50 AM I was thinking of adding a "888" icon to member's who purchase a 888 G8.
For verification I was going to have people send me a photo of their RPO sticker with a sticky note next to it with their screen name written down.

In some ways I view it like the founding members icon on the LS1GTO.com site. I don't think many know the origins of that badge. People who ordered a 2004 GTO with out even seeing one back in 2003 tracked their GTO's being built had their Order #'s and build status as a part of their account information. After the first batches were built and delivered I replaced all that information with the "Founding Members" icon. If you hover your cursor over that icon on LS1GTO.com you'll see the order #, status (6000 = delivered), and the color of the GTO.
Just a neat little fact.
Cool_Hand_Luke 01-03-2008, 12:45 PM Very cool idea.
r.penguin@comcast.net 01-03-2008, 04:34 PM Very cool idea.
DY - With any luck, I will have that for you by early March.
ecetim 01-03-2008, 05:16 PM I always wondered what "Founding Members" meant. I figured it was just people who were there since day 1. Cool
DevilYellow 01-03-2008, 06:20 PM I chose the words founding member, because it was their enthusiasm for the new GTO that was the founding basis for the site :)
chiefpontiac 01-04-2008, 08:47 AM That's a good idea. Won't affect me, though. At solsticeforum he had a member that created a list of Apprentice 1000s ordered along with color and was updated as cars were built and delivered. Unfortunately we did not have the ability to track vehicles' progress other than weekly bugging the dealers who overall were clueless as to what the codes meant. (we did have a couple of on board dealers look up stuff for us, and another member taht could track trains, once the code for rail shipment appeared). But we also designated (for a while) the first 1000 members of the forum as "first 1000" until that became confusing alongside the actual F1k units. But we also have included and designated "founding members" based on when they joined the forum regardless of the timing of vehicle purchase.
BTW, correct me if I'm wrong, but from seeing pics of particluar cars being ship offloaded, etc, you guys had access to a heck of a lot more information direct from Pontiac than has ever been available before or after (or is taht just a perception) With all of teh G8s being prebuilt prior to any tagging this is an entirely different ballgame, but it sure would be nice if Pontiac had a secure customer site where we could track any specifically ordered car from allocation to delivery. It would not be that difficult to create, as they wish for customers to sign up for a myGM account anyway.
sccaGTO 01-04-2008, 11:11 PM I chose the words founding member, because it was their enthusiasm for the new GTO that was the founding basis for the site :)
And you don't really have to buy one. You can just slap that moniker on you profile. :secret:

We had no real help from GM. In fact I never met anyone from Pontiac until a few months before the 2005's went on sale. Some of it was Pontiac/Holden media/marketing.... some of it was members in Australia ... some of it was a few employees from Holden (1 who lost their job for being careless with info in public) ... a little help from Pontiac with hints, but it was mostly the hard work of site staff and friends at dealerships to manually update the order status.

McCarron 01-09-2008, 08:04 AM Is it sad that I want to get a G8 just to get a badge next to my name here? Damn you DY and your cunning trickery! I am still waiting for GXP model though. Maybe they'll do some promotion similar with the first GXPs, call them the "Fast First 888" maybe? ;)
bracketracer 01-09-2008, 08:11 AM Wow pontiacnutt, you must really be at a high volume dealership. I stopped by my dealer last night, and my salesman said that they were informed that they would only get 3 2008 G8s total. He didn't know if any would be the first 888, but I doubt it since they aren't expecting any of them until March. The salesman was pretty frustrated because he said they are only being given limited information still, and not enough to answer many customer questions.
I'm with McCarron, I'm waiting for a GXP, or at least a manual transmission option on the G8 GT. If neither of those ever come back then I may have to settle for the automatic, but i really don't want to.

Overall dealer volume is meaningless. "Retail" Pontiac sales is a small factor (25%) but allocation is mostly influenced by competitive registrations (75%). His dealership must be in an area with a high percentage of Maxima's, Chargers, G35's and BMWs.

The dealer that I locked up mine at has an Audi dealership on one side, a Dodge dealership on it's other side and an Infiniti/Nissan dealership across the street. :dunno:
The place is real small though. You hardly notice it driving by.

Tell him to join the forum. We'll always have more info faster than teh dealer network. And more reliable, too.
asylum 01-09-2008, 08:09 PM some of it was members in Australia ... some of it was a few employees from Holden (1 who lost their job for being careless with info in public)
wow! so it really does happen? what kind of info were they leaking?

You bet! Most jobs people hold you are required to sign an NDA that if breached you'll lose your job. Gotta keep company secrets, secret.

Well.... talking about a 6.0L motor, hood scoops, and twin exit exhaust. In November of 2003. I have a photo of a mule with an experimental 05 hood ... the photo was taken in December of 2003.
r1owner 01-10-2008, 12:25 PM So is the G8 going to have an LS3 standard next year then? ;)

PMD G8 03-17-2008, 10:15 PM I was thinking of adding a "888" icon to member's who purchase a 888 G8.

So DY, now that the first 888 are being snatched up, will we be able to see something like this under the owners screennames if they can provide substantial proof of ownership? Also, what about "2008 G8 Owner / Holden SSV Owner, etc." indications for the profiles, similar to what you have on ls1gto.com?

I want a "first 888" icon ! I'm #878.
Cashed 03-20-2008, 10:57 AM I would like the "first 888" icon as well. I do not have a pic of my car up because i am borderline "computer illiterate." The file size of my pics are too small. but once I can get my brain to function properly, pics will be up to prove that I am LEGIT!
PMD G8 03-20-2008, 12:12 PM Paging DY.....
Dont forget about me, #252. I want the icon too . I have proved myself worthy, with a litle help from Cajun.

Carl Black Pontiac in Kennesaw, GA has a black and red non 888 GT premium, sport and sunroof for list price + $3000 Market Adjustment. That puts them just under $37K!
And the dealers are complaining sales are down. Do you think sales might be down because of their own stupidly?

I know they are going to have an GXP which is going to have the ls3 but i haven't heard anything about them having a standard yet...it is still early to tell but as of this moment no on the standard
ssw763@yahoo.com 11-26-2008, 04:41 PM is it the last 3 numbers of the VIN?
