Nice! It'll be great to see a bunch of G8's together at one of these.

Reminds me of the old days at Pomona....20+ Impala SS's in the staging area...

Sounds like there'll be a couple of really quick G8's there. Can't wait!

It's really pretty easy. Nothing to it. I haven't been to Fontana since they moved the strip to the back of the facility, but IIRC...

Go through tech inspection.
Get your run card and wrist band.
You'll get your NHRA number and will need to write it on the windows. Bum some white window marker from a fellow racer for this if you don't have it.
Wait in the parking lot.
When they call your group (not sure how they're grouping them), drive up to the staging lanes.
Drive up as instructed.
You can do a burnout to clean your tires before you get to the line. Or you can just go around the burnout area if you don't want to do one.
Drive up to the staging lights. Go slowly, breaking the pre-stage lights first and then stop when you get the second set of lights to come on. With both sets of staging lights on, you are "staged".
When the other car is also staged, the tree is ready to light up, so get ready.
As the yellow lights go down, as soon as you see the last yellow light come on, get on the gas. (I don't think you'll want to stomp on it or else you'll spin the tires, unless you have drag radials.) Don't wait for the green light to come on if you want a good reaction time (R/T).
Go WOT all the way past the finish, letting up and braking only after you've crossed the line.
Drive to the timing booth and get your timeslip.
Repeat again from step 4.

Now, there are variations and little things that you can do, such as power braking, where you use your left foot on the brake while you use your right on the gas to get the revs up. However, I'm not sure how many RPMs you can hold the G8 this way before you inch forward and red light. And you can gradually apply the throttle or mash it down, depending on the amount of traction you think you're going to have.

You also have to decide on whether you want to do the run on D, S, or manual shift. I think the common is "S" mode.

You can also lower the air pressure on the rear tires, lift up your hood during the waiting period to cool down your engine, etc.

Plus, it sounds like your car is going to be modded, so what I just described may not be exactly what you would do. :)

That be an outdoor range....in Lytle Creek in Fontana....where Sierra ends. They've cleaned that place up really good and is a pretty good range. A couple of weekends ago, they had the beltfed group there shooting some way cool machine guns. Loved watching them do that.

Shotgun, pistol, rifle, etc.

I may wind up waiting until the following weekend to go to the range, though. Not sure wife.com will be too happy if I played both days this weekend. :wink2:

Track day with G8's!

I see very few GT's if any on the street yet alone run down the 1/4.

I remember attending the Ponona Street Legal drags days when I had my LS1 Camaro SS. Hands down it was the best local 1/4 track to run street cars. Too bad the homeowners in the immediate area got sick of us. Ponona only runs NHRA 2 times a year there.

Which day will the majority of you will be attending?

Yeah, those days at Pomona were great. All those cars in the parking lot waiting for the call to the staging lanes. Great times!

I'm planning on being there on Saturday instead of Sunday. A few of us are planning on meeting in Ontario somewhere before so we can grab breakfast and all drive together to the tech inspection. Not sure we've finalized anything yet, though.

I was the one in the pearl red Cadillac STS hanging with the impala guys. And also at Terminal Island just about every weekend the short time they were open in the mid 90s.

I think the G8 will be this decades's Impala. Before I brought my 2009 sport red GT back across the country, it saw duty at Norwalk at the Ames Tri Power Nationals and National Trails.

I think I will go Saturday. What time do you have to be there to get a run card? I quit going to Fontana a few years ago because of the huge crowds. I think with them running both weekend days it might not be as bad

My SA2005 helmet is back in Ohio and all I have here is a SA1995. I assume that's going to be a problem? Where can you find a SA versus a M on the West Side (Soviet Monica)? I guess the lefties around here don't need helmets for their Pruis.

Cool. Back then, there were so many of us in the SoCalSS club that it was tough to keep track of everyone. :) I know I went to quite a few track dates with the club back then, so chances are, I saw your car.

Just throwin' an idea for a time and place to meet beore tech on Saturday. IIRC, there's a Carl's Jr. off the 4th Street exit of the 15 at the Ontario Mills. From there, we can simply take 4th street east to Cherry Avenue, turn left, and another left into the track.

I think that the store is actually on Mills Circle in Ontario.

4453 Mills Circle, Ontario, CA 91764

From the 10, you take the 15 North
Then take the 4th Street exit, turn right (heading west)
Go past the movie theater and the Carl's will be on the left

Maybe meet at 6 and head to tech between 6:30 and 7? I don't know what time tech opens, though.

Okay, their website has been updated with the times:

Gate opens at 6am for line up.
Tech starts at 7am.
Racing goes from 9am to 5pm.

$20 per car and driver to race.
$10 per spectator.

Sooooo, do we meet earlier, like 5:30? The Carl's has 24hr drive-thru, but the inside is open at 6.

Well, so far, it's just me and Gpdan that sound "confirmed", though the Carl's Jr and time isn't quite concrete.

I'm thinking:

5:30am at Carl's - go through drive-thru and eat in parking lot
6:00am drive to Autoclub Dragway to line up for tech

Another thing about helmets... I might just buy one but i'm wondering if I can use one from a motorcycle. I know there are differences between them but the Auto Club Site doesn't really mention it. It just says it has to be SNELL 2000, but there is SNELL SA2000 (for auto) and SNELL M2000 (for bikes)...

Will a M2000 pass tech?

Well, I just bought my helmet. The rules say that a sticker on it has to say that it's SNELL approved, and the one I bought from the motorcycle shop here says it's both SNELL and DOT on the back of the helmet (HJC CL-31). I'm fairly sure that it should be okay.

Ok well since you are all making it out i'll be joining you too. I'm really going to try to get out there by 6am but if I don't (either cause the drive or i can't wake up) then I'll see you guys at the track at a later time.

In case i'm late do they close tech at a certain time or is it purely based on how many people show up?

Well... I work in Fontana & it rained on me all the way into work this morning but let up as I got into Fontana. It's dry here now so here's hoping it stays that way thru tomorrow. Current weather report says sun & clouds with a high of 76 for tomorrow.

I got my helmet and I'm planning on being at the Carls Jr. @ 6:00am to head over to the track with the pack. :driving:

Where is this Carl's?

So this is still the Carl's that everyone is talking about?

Not sure, but I think they would close tech after so many cars go through.

Yes, that's where I plan to be around 5:30am and then head off to the track around 6am or so.

That must be a true statement cuz only people who live, work or play in Fontana know to call it Fontucky. :wink2: It's also known as the trucking capitol of the world.

Hey what kind of air pressure do you guys plan on running in your tires... (19s).

Hey what kind of air pressure do you guys plan on running in your tires... (19s).

I was thinking about that. Maybe mid to high 20's in the rear and 42 or so in the fronts. Nice that we have a tire inflater to use aftewards. :)

Sounds like saturday is a go for most here.

I have no current spec helmet so I'll probably won't be racing my SRT8.

BTW tech is a mix bag. Some tech inspectors don't check everything throughly and some WILL check for the proper safety equipment including the correct dated approved helmet.

My advice is when ask by the techs how fast I'll go just sandbag it a little higher in 1/4 times than you expect. So if you run low 13's say mid to high 13's etc...

i plan on running 51 on the fronts and 35 in the rear. If you go under 30 psi, the tire inflation monitor will go off. I will see you guys there.

It was wonderful to meet everyone very early this morning. We had five of us there and had all colors represented except grey metallic, liquid red and pacific slate. White hot wasn't there yet in the attached pic. It wasn't as horribly crowded as I've seen it before so we could get some runs in.

All cars were bone stock except one had a VMS tune. I think we have come to the conclusion that the VMS tune was worth about 3/10ths and 3 mph.

It was a cloudy day and threatening rain for part of the day. We had some questions regarding environmental conditions and so everyone can adjust their runs to the same weather conditions here is the link to a very good AD convertor from Drag Times.

http://www.dragtimes.com/da-density-altitude-calculator.php?elevationcorrect=1554&et=13.63&mph=103.63&correctetmph=Correct+ET+and+MPH

We need to get this going so it's like the old PIMPala SS days at Pomona when we would have 20-25 Impalas there. Think we can get at least 10 G8s there next time?

Hey Scott,

I just ordered the VMS tune. Hopefully, I get that FlashXpress sent out in the next two weeks so I can have the car ready for December. Of course, you may have your Roto-Fab by then, so we'll see how much that is good for when we line up again.

The Roto Fab should be here today. I may well order the Dashhawk so I can see the difference (if any) before I order the VMS retune. Next is the exhaust system and that is likely it. I don't what to put thousands upon thousands in the car because I need to make room for a 6 speed GXP and then a Camaro next summer.

Well dangit, you'll be quicker again in December. :)

I won't have the exhaust done until I hear the stock exhaust on the GXP. I will, however, not run with a full gas tank like I did last time. That's an extra 100 lbs that I don't need.

Roto Fab here, but not installed and Dash Hawk on the way. Then figure out Dash Hawk so I can test, then install Roto Fab. Test again and then order VMS update tune for the Roto Fab Then to Fontana on 12-6for a real test. Correct using the D/A convertor and then I'll have a pretty good idea of real world effect of mods.

sounds like a plan!

Hey Scott,

Just got the email from VMS. They're shipping the FlashXpress tomorrow and I should have it in my hands on Thursday. Should be tuned before the weekend.

Looks like I'll be ready for December. :)

I didn't want to install my roto fab before I got my dashhawk to do a few baseline runs. The dashhawk confirmed what I had been feeling on the 1-2 shift --- at 6600 rpms. No wonder its bumping the rev limiter. Inspite of all of that I still got a 0-60 of 4.58 and then a 4.44 and a 1/4 of 12.91 @ 111.8 ( a full tank again), but that's here (Soviet Monica) at about 60' above sea level at about 55-60 degrees at 3:00 am in the morning. I hope to get the roto fab installed this weekend and then do the retune.

I would like to see a 13.50 next time and I would think the weight reduction of a 100-110 lbs of not running with a full tank would get me part way there. And the 1-2 shift rev limiter stumble can't be helping me much. Too bad I can't take an 80 pound **** --- I need to. However, that breakfast Carl's Jr fart burger we all ate has to be worth 5 hp considering that our ass is aimed rearward while we're racing.

Or maybe I should bring my avatar to the track. It's just a base 389-303 hp 4bbl, 63 Grand Prix, but from what I saw last time, I could sure run with those 350Zs that were there. 14.70s at 96 or 97 is what this big hog runs too. My 66 421-376 hp tri-power Grand Prix runs just about the same as my G8, but with a 106-107 trap speed --- go figure.

Hey Scott, I got the VMS tune uploaded into the car!

Did the ECM and TCM tunes via the FlashXpress from VMS today.

Looks like I should be ready for Fontana on the 6th!
