So it's a sealed system? (V6) John Wilson

Yes, no transmission dipstick on either V6 or GT.

it's not "sealed", they just fixed it so you need a lift to check your fluid. They don't trust us to put the right kind of fluid in it.

No, That's smart. I've seen idiots pump differential lube into the engine to "increase compression".

So we should have to take our cars to the dealer for everything?

My neighbor used Crisco oil in his BMW.

Guess what happened 3 months later?

It's not that. It was saving money on warranty repairs and customer dissatisfaction. Too many people didn't know how to properly check and fill their tranny and blew them up. Unless there's a leak, there should be no reason to check the tranny fluid.

If they are worried about people not checking a filling right... why make it even harder? Why not find a way to check the level without having to be warm and running?

No dipstick leads to less maintenence, and more blown up trannys.

I'm not sure my tranny is full. Instead of just checking it myself, I have to take most of an afternoon off work to go to the dealer.

They're worried we will put the wrong fluid in it mostly I guess. Oh well, I still think it was a ****ty thing for them to do.

Yeah, if you drive your car hard you don't want to know if it was filled to factory spec when you drive it. Or the condition of the fluid after high miles. Or if the fluid has any strange metallic stuff in it. Who cares.

Exactly. Instead you should pay 50-100 for a dealer to tell you these things :(

Yep and then TRUST that they are telling you the truth. Not just making up some BS that the fluid is "dirty" so they'll have to drain and flush the system. "That will be an extra 100 dollars please". Then the tech underfills it by 2 quarts because he's hungover on Monday and figures its just like any other car that only needs XX quarts.

Pathetic.

Who will be the first to find where to tap the tranny pan and rig up a system to let you check the fluid on your own. (Yes this would entail a TON of work)

actually the tranny already has a hole for the stick. we've already tried a dipstick from another application but there isn't room on the side of the engine to route it. the only possible answer is a flexible firewall mount stick like Lokar makes. Problem is that they don't make one for a 6L80.

We've been working on this for months with no success so far. It's going to take a custom stick/housing but no mods to the trans will be needed.

Oh, you mean like Ford did, from the factory, with their Explorers and Sport Tracs?

I'll be interested in your results, keep us updated. I'm sure the ST will be the same.

Results are frozen in time at this point. There are no custom stick makers within driving distance of me. My best suggestion is to email Lokar. Perhaps if enough do....

Sorry for what may be a stupid question - I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to that - but how do the dealers check it?

There's a procedure which requires a lift. It involves removing a plug and pumping fluid into the filler hole (where the dipstick SHOULD be) until it dribbles out of the previously plugged hole. It's not very difficult, just requires the car be lifted and level.

Has anyone done any of this as far as changing their tranny fluid? On a V6 or V8?

I ask as I'm thinking of changing mine over to Royal Purple.

I would suggest not since you're restricted to going to dealer for even fluid checks (at least most of us are) and they WILL void your trans warranty for using anything other than Dex 6.

So we can change our engine oil to anything we want and not void the warrenty but if we change the tranny oil to something better it will void the warenty. Dosen't sound fair. But then again, thats the manufactures.

I was just looking at going to Royal Purple a sit's a better oil and will not burn up like the convential oils do. Also looking at possibly adding in a tranny cooler.

Guess I could talk to my dealer and see what they say. I don't want to void the warrent espically since I got the extended one.

Thanks, I see. So then, they can't really just check the fluid without touching or altering it, they actually have to fill it up with more fluid just to "check" it? Wow. :bomb:
