: Just wondering......

With all the comparisons between the G8 and Charger, Maxima and Infiniti, I was wondering about the gas. I know the Charger R/T with the 5.7 can run without premium unleaded (but better with it), so will the G8 6.0 require premium or can I use regular or plus unleaded gas? Reason that I asked is that we can use our personal cars for police patrol work and alot of my beat partners are using the R/T. We have free gas but only up to 89 octane. They discontinued 92 due to high gas prices. The R/T can run with the 89 that we are using but I wouldn't mind using the G8 for patrol IF it doesn't REQUIRE premium unleaded.:dunno:

Just wanted to know...thanks:gears:

So far, in this forum, it seems to open to debate. All the reviews I have seen say 87 octane.:dunno:

Pontiac will offer the rear-wheel-drive 2008 G8 with two engine choices, including a V6 and a V8. The smaller of the two is an aluminum 3.6-liter, 24-valve, dual overhead cam V6 with variable-valve timing and is paired with the G8 base model. Running on regular gas, the V6 puts out 261 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 250 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,200 rpm, delivering its power with the help of a manually-interactive five-speed automatic transmission. GT versions of the G8 are home to an aluminum 6.0-liter, 16-valve, small-block V8 cranking out 362 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 391 lb.-ft. at 4,400 with regular-grade gas. A manually-interactive six-speed automatic is standard, while a six-speed manual is optional (someday).

GM has been saying from day one that it will be able to run on regular grade gas. That is one of it's many selling points (compared to the GTO). I blame the "premium" debate on misinformed media outlets.

Form a Tuner that has already got some of the files from them, GTPprix, they have an 87 tune on them.

You can run 87 in the GTO, it just reduces the power....probably close to 360 ;)

Guaranteed out of te hbox to run on 87, straight from Pontiac. Will it auto advance teh spark if you run 89 or 93? That's teh biggest debate. My hunch is it will, otherwise there would be absolutely no need for the knock sensors (which it has, but have been mmoved outboard of the block as the normal position is taken up by AFM actuators.

Thank you for all that information. Trying to get this car for patrol use right now. This would make a good replacement for our aging crown vics.:D

You don't need to worry. Modern cars can handle regular gas. Even High power applications, from a Corvette ZR-1 on down, they can run on regular. Such cars only RECOMMEND premium fuel. They will all run just fine on regular, although they would experience a very (very) small drop in power and fuel economy.

But from all I've heard, the G8 is tuned for regular anyway.

should run 89 no problem. get the g8, the r/ts are quick, but the g8gt should be quite a bit quicker and get the same if not better mileage. getting a charger to compete performance wise with the g8gt you would need to opt for the srt8 version, and even then, i still dont believe performance would be quite as good as the g8gt.
