: Pontiac Loyal?
appletonrc 01-13-2008, 09:58 AM Seems like most here have a Pontiac already. I was just curious if you are Pontiac loyal, or they just happen to have what you want?
I'm not really brand loyal, Pontiac has seemed to have the right combo of features vs cost for me. I started with a 93 Grand Am. That was just a college car really. My first new car was a 99 Grand Prix GT. Then I got a 1 year old GTO. Now, I'll be getting a G8 GT. For me it is styling, power, and cost. I think I consider the pontiacs as a entry level BMW. I like the looks of the BMWs but the cost holds me back. Bang for buck, especially with the G8, it is hard to beat.
Anyone else?
sccaGTO 01-13-2008, 10:19 AM I have shown tendancies to brand loyalty. But, that is to all US brands, so I guess that doesn't count. When I got the GTO, it had what I wanted. I liked the style of the '97-'03 GP, but hated FWD. The GTO had a similar style. It had the LS2 engine for it's second year. It had a color that I loved. And GMAC let me have it. Hahahahaha. They had no idea what kind of owner I am. But, for right now, the list of possible new vehicles is more diverse. Between the G8, then we are supposed to get the Ute (ST), & possibly the new '09 Ram truck. Since I got my Dakota Shelby, that points me toward Dodge. Oddly enough, Ford doesn't offer me anything that I really like.
bracketracer 01-13-2008, 10:55 AM I will admit to being VERY Pontiac loyal. My first car (which I still have and race) was a brand new '93 Sunbird that I bought in Oct '92. I also bought a nearly identical '92 Sunbird for parts a few years ago. Then I bought my '00 GTP in Aug '00. The only way that I buy non-Pontiac is if I need a type of vehicle that Pontiac doesn't offer. My wife and I had a '04 Trailblazer that we traded in on an '06 Trailblazer ('04 was entry level LS with no options, even floor mat delete from factory!). That's her DD, and I use it to wheel dolly my car to the track. She liked it better than the Envoy, and it was cheaper, so that's why we didn't go GMC.
If Pontiac built garbage, I wouldn't buy it. We did test drive an Aztek back in '04, and the only things I liked about it were the orange color and the Pontiac emblems! So far they have always offered the type of cars I like. The rest of my family are the same way. We own 85% Pontiacs, and the rest are Chevys (mostly trucks).
I hope the G8 is good enough to lure people back to Pontiac. I recommend Pontiac to everyone I know, but alot of these folks owned Pontiacs in the 80s & 90s that not up to snuff, and they will never go back no matter how much I try to convince them.
Scalarrthu 01-13-2008, 02:04 PM I will admit I am loyal to GM as a whole, not just one of their brands. My first car was a '86 Monte Carlo SS and it still hasn't stopped up to my current '06 Trailblazer SS. I've owned Chevy, Pontiac and GMC, and all my race cars/dragsters have been Chevy and/or Chevy powered. I don't see myself changing that anytime soon either.
Camino LS6 01-13-2008, 08:01 PM Every new vehicle I have ever bought has been Chevy or Pontiac.
I guess that makes me brand loyal.
Oddly enough, Ford doesn't offer me anything that I really like.
What is odd about that? :gr_jest:

In the US, there are (were) only 2 cars that generate any excitement. The Mustang, which everyone has that wanted one. Or the $150K+ USD Ford GT. At least GM has offered several alternatives for the enthusiast on a budget. If Ford would bring over the Orion Falcon & Ute, they would give us more options.

Bought my first Pontiac in 1966. A silver 1965 GTO with red stripe Tiger Paws. The G8 GT will kick it's ass in every way, but I loved that car. It got T-boned by a lumber truck in N. Carolina in 1974 (lousy traction on hailstones), but wish I still had it.
not me .. i am mostly a euro style guy myself.
Would of got the BMW 1 series had they not jacked the price so high that i cant afford it.
I just have never had the love for GM cars because lack of style and lack of features mixed with power options.
chiefpontiac 01-14-2008, 08:04 AM I've been bleeding Pontiac since 1975 when I bought a brand-new '74 Firebird to replace a '71 Camaro. Long line of Pontiacs since with one car wedged in that WAS "my father's Oldsmobile" (sold it to him so I could get a 6000STE). Wife is thinking Accord, so I have to get her behind the wheel of a G8 before we make the plunge. What I see with PMD is that it truly is today BMW or Honda competition but at such a bargain not only up front, but down the road. Let's put it this way, when's the last time you spent $500 for a 36,000 mile service at 18 months on any "American" car? In the 4 decades I've been driving I have yet to replace brake fluid or transmission fluid or even antifreeze on anyone's schedule and consistently rack up well over 100,000 miles per vehicle. (knock on wood).
I have owned a 1993 GP with B4U pkg, 2000 GTP and finally a 2004 CompG. The 2004 had several problems within 36K miles and it caused me to steer away from Pontiac. I guess I could say all of the problems was partially my fault since I went against my own feelings and that is never buy a car the first year run. I learned from my mistakes. I feel the G8 has a head start since it is already a production car and soon it will be time to trade my rice in.
Dan1G8 01-14-2008, 12:23 PM Of all the cars I have owned.
1988 GMC S15 4cyl swb -Still have . 235K on the boat anchor of a motor and still kicking.
1993 Cutlass Supreme -still have. My son drives. 232k miles on 3.1 v6 and rolling.
1997 Firebird traded. Never any problems.
2000 Intrepid - total POS
2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GT - my DD,127k, I think tranny is fixing to take a dump
2003 Mustang GT 5spd - never any problems. 5 speed was real fun. Traded on 06
2006 Mustang GT Auto - rear end problems, constant valvetrain noise and very thirsty. Made my ex take in divorce agreement. She traded it 6mo later for a 07 Pasat Wolfsburg edition.
I would say I prefer GM products.
DevilYellow 01-14-2008, 12:47 PM I am a GM Loyal, more of a Buick guy myself really. But if anyone made a kick ass car I would consider it.
1987 Buick Turbo Regal
1999 Buick Regal GS
2004 GTO
2007 GMC Sierra Duramax
Shaffe 01-14-2008, 01:36 PM im domestic loyal, GM or Ford. cant stand Dodge, dontthink their products are appealing and their quality control is horrible
TomPierce 01-14-2008, 05:04 PM I'm not particularly loyal to any brand - I tend to go with what I think is the best I can afford. I've owned 1962 Hillmann Minx that cost me $15 :), Jeeps, mostly Chrysler products during high school / college, a Capri and a couple of Mustangs and will be coming from a '94 Impala SS to the G8. The only consistent thing is gobs of extra hosepower (except for the Hilmann, of course :) and Rear Wheel Drive.

Ford Australia did ask for Ford US HQ approval to build a left hand drive Falcon when the current shaped (AU) Falcon was being developed. Ford Australia basically wanted to sell into the same global markets that holden is selling into but the idea was sunk by Ford US HQ. The main reason for this was so Ford US could reserve the export markets to sell its ageing Crown Victoria. Ford Australia then used it's development dollars the build the Territory (RV). Yet another Dumb decision by Ford management in my opinion because even though I prefer holden/GM vehicles, overall the Falcon is a great car that would do very well in the US market. My brother has a current model falcon XR8 with the 5.4 V8 (similar to mustang V8) As far as ride, comfort and handling, I'd say it's better than my commodore. It's just the Falcon styling that doesn't do much for me! There has been some news hear that the next series Falcon due out this year will be built LHD for export markets! If this car makes it to the US, I think it will do just as well as the G8!

I'm sure that if the decision was made to build LHD models, that would have led to a new "series". The current Ford AU & FPV versions are great looking vehicles (IMO). If Ford AU (or US for that matter) want to improve their chances of survival, then building cars like the Orion for global use will be a very important move. I heard 2 interesting pieces of news about Ford this week. 1) The Crown Vic will no longer be sold to civilians. It will be sold to fleet services only (think police departments). What will Ford attempt to pawn off on those potential customers? The FWD Taurus. :barf: 2) The reason the US market won't get the European version of the Focus was because of the price Ford would have to sell it for. Or, should I say want to sell it for. If Ford doesn't sell Orion cars here in the US, then they are destined for more financial struggles.
r.penguin@comcast.net 01-14-2008, 07:28 PM Can't expect much from Ford now that they are having to deal with Microsoft management.
Vista anyone?:ban:
94commo 01-14-2008, 08:25 PM The focus was a bit of a turkey in OZ as well! When it was launched 5 or so years ago they didn't sell any, but with fuel prices and a bit of a price trim, I think ford are now moving a few! As for the rest of Ford Australia's model line-up, it appears that they have the same problem (of falling sales figures) as the parent company. What I find ironic is that there is nothing wrong with the Falcons that are rolling out of the factory. Ford Australia's cars are just as good as Holden in terms of build quality ect and would sell in the same global markets but I think the main difference between Holden and Ford AU is that Holden make less mistakes at a senior management level. It is big news here that Holden is exporting half of its commodore production and the plant is virtually running at capacity - news that makes the local Ford execs green with envy!
Never owned a Pontiac, but I have owned all American. If the G8 hadn't come along I would probably be buying my first ever non-domestic marque.
My short car history:
1977 Plymouth Fury Sport (318ci) - Nice motor :D
1973 Olds Toronado (455ci) - Front-wheel drive; roll up the windows to do burnouts
1971 Chevy Monte Carlo (350ci) - Beautiful car; sad I sold it :(
1995 Ford Taurus SHO (3.2L) - Solid player with a Yamaha motor; great passing gear
2003 Chevy Avalanche (5.3L) - Great motor; even greater blown ;)
2006 Trailblazer SS (6.0L) - Lots of power but too much TM; gas hog
2008 Pontiac G8 (6.0L) - ???
kfinto 01-15-2008, 11:37 AM I have owned 3 Oldsmobiles and 4 Chevys. I still have two of the Chevys. So I can say I'm GM loyal.
JTSnooks 01-17-2008, 08:27 AM 1966 Pontiac Ventura - Sold 4 months ago, drove it for 8 years, first car
2004 Pontiac Grand Prix - Awesome car, wife was in love with it, sold 3 months ago to buy a house
2005 Pontiac GTO - Let's just say it will be around for a while. Perfect car for me.
1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue - Not a great car, but cheap and costs nothing if it needs repairs
That's my entire car owning history. The '66 I fell in love with when I first saw it/drove it when I was 15. In that time I lusted after everything under the sun, the most affordable of which was a Trans Am (loved the LS1s, really wanted a '67). They cancelled the Firebirds when I was in college, but also came out with the GTOs. What kept me from buying a trans am was the interior, the age since they had stopped making them, and the impression people get when they see a young guy driving one. So the GTO was perfect.
Yes, I'm Pontiac loyal, mostly because my first car was a Pontiac, and they offered exactly what I wanted at just the right time.
BBBBGXP 01-17-2008, 09:28 PM 1985 Gran AM V6 A4 - gone after only 130K
1992 Transport - hey, we had kids that required it!
1997 Gran Prix 3.8V6 - lease was up, it was gone!
2004 Bonneville GXP - waiting for the G8 GXP to replace it!

Over here the Focus generally referred to as "one of the cartoon cars". :gr_jest:

PMD G8 01-18-2008, 09:25 AM Not brand loyal, just whatever floats my boat. Right now I'm not sure if my next car will be a G8 or not. The local Chevy dealer is trying to sell me a Z06. :D (GTPprix, the bastard, told me I NEEDed to get in one.)
Between my wife and myself, mostly trucks and SUVs.
1- Oldsmobile (71 Cutlass)
1- Buick Wagon (First Car, passed down to me)
2- Chevys ('70 Nova, Suburban)
3- Fords (2 Trucks/Expy)
6- GMC's (3 Trucks/3 SUV's)
1- Pontiac (Derrrr..)
And if you count the work issued vehicles:
2- Crown Vics
1- POS Ford Windstar
1- Dodge Durango (The best work vehicle yet)
KaiserM715 01-18-2008, 12:01 PM I have always liked Pontiac's cars, but this will be my first Pontiac. My wife has always driven a Chevy (a Celebrity and then a Lumina). I have always drive Fords ('71 Mustang, '90 Bronco II and currently '00 Ranger) or Jeeps (currently '67 M715 - soon to be Ford FE powered!!). The Lumina will get the boot to make way for the G8. I was not a big GM fan in the pre-LS engine days (I despise the old small block - many other better designs out there), but I am a HUGE fan of the LS series engine. Best mass-produced push-rod engine ever.
I am Holden loyal. I have owned many models over the years and had the same consistent reliabilty with all of them. Plus, I have worked in the Holden side of the industry for a long time and I am now at the point where my opinions would be classified as heavily biased.......:wink2:

I guess I've become fond of Holden as well :) It was probably a few years before the GTO when I discovered what was going on down under and from then on I've complained "why don't we get those". Now we do - thanks!
Rooster 01-19-2008, 04:11 PM I've owned a '96 Impala SS for the past 12 years. I want a new Silverado but am interested in the G8 ST. I have never owned a Pontiac.
archerm3 01-20-2008, 01:24 PM No brand loyalty here. Each brand must continually prove themselves to me year after year.
About the closest brand loyalty I have is to Toyota after growing up with FJ40's and 55's and P.U.'s. But with the new taco's and tundra's: :barf:
Second closest would be BMW but their pricing has got out of hand, quality and especially service has suffered lately, and that crazy Idrive ****. The new 1 series looks promising though. Still can't get passed the idiot elitist BMW stealers. They donts likes me :mullet:
need4spd 01-20-2008, 07:04 PM Never owned a pontiac before, no GM's even, actually, this will be my first new domestic car ever, only had domestic beaters in the past, never my primary car, and I am not a new driver.
The Holden, er, Pontiac, just has what I was looking for.

I've said it before, the main reason the US is getting such a great car as the G8 is that the Falcon is such a good car. Holden had to make the VE sensational just to keep ahead. There are two things that stop me from buying one. The blue oval badge on the front and the blue oval badge on the back...
In 20 years I have owned just 3 cars
1973 HQ Holden Premier 202 (should never have sold it)
1989 Subaru Liberty (Legacy) AWD wagon (300,000 miles killed it)
2003 Holden Commodore Berlina wagon (will be around until it dies)
My wife has also had just 3 cars
1980 Toyota KE55 Corolla (great low speed oversteer on dirt)
1991 Subaru Liberty sedan (written off)
2002 Holden Commodore Berlina sedan
We like pigeon pairs ...
