: Detroit Auto Show 2008 underway
Autoblog has a ton of news about Detroit Auto Show 2008.
Just giving people a heads up that the G8 GT will probably be there and more info to come.
Pushing_Tin 01-13-2008, 01:52 PM It's next weekend right? Do we have any Detroit members that are going to look?
19th through the 27th.
However, there is already coverage of some vehicle's from the show. Can't wait to hear about the G8 GT. There is not a day i do not think about it! I tell everyone that this is my next car..
TY2185 01-13-2008, 02:57 PM I'm planning on being there. Lots of great cars to look at this year.
UltraMagnus 01-13-2008, 06:12 PM Does anyone know of a show schedule for the G8? Not just a its here on a pedestal but actual people will be able to get in and really lay their hands on it.

Cool and thanks for the live updates!
Cool_Hand_Luke 01-14-2008, 04:27 PM The CTS coupe looks hot.
J_Grand 01-14-2008, 08:17 PM I'll be going to the NAIAS Sunday, so I'll post the pics I take
i saw the cts coupe. Amazing car just afraid it would cost 60k and therefore never reach my hands
J_Grand 01-15-2008, 07:49 PM heres some pics from the autoshow. WARNING!!! i didnt take them myself, they came from a local photographer and he added some graphics to them, but enjoy i guess
r.penguin@comcast.net 01-15-2008, 09:29 PM I just can't get into Cadillac as a performance car. I had a choice between an STS and the Bonnie SSEi. After driving both for 5 days, it was no contest. :sneaky:

Those pictures are awesome! I like the one of the rear. Can't wait to drive this car!

alensoChev 01-16-2008, 12:24 PM Here is an article from thegmsource.com about the base production model.
Includes a small walkthrough.

r.penguin@comcast.net 01-16-2008, 01:01 PM It's not a GT, but if that production paint is Magnetic Grey metallic I am happy. :yumyum:
BBBBGXP 01-16-2008, 08:48 PM Saw the article. Pretty "plain Jane" version, straight G8 model. NAIAS coverage was pretty much a wash. No G8 exposure, other than a floor model. No GXP announcement, no ute, nothing. Unless they are holding out for Chicago, the wait goes on!
I'm disappointed there is almost no mention of the G8 on motortrend.com. Then again, these auto shows are about future vehicles and developments.
johnh 01-17-2008, 11:01 AM So were still teased, by not actually being able to sit in it? Come on GM, get one there!!
70transam 01-17-2008, 11:25 AM GM is making a big mistake by not having several G8 models at the show. If they won't be there they should at least mention that the car will be at the Chicago show. When you have so much demand even before the car hits the showrooms, they are missing the boat ( excuse the pun!)
Mike P 01-17-2008, 12:21 PM I agree with both John & "70". In addition, today's Detroit News (newspaper) with the NAIAS section doesn't even mention the G8 at all. The only mention of the G8 in the whole paper is an dealership add with GMC & Pontiac with prices and a picture of the G8, but it has no affiliation with the auto show coverage!
G8BLBYU 01-17-2008, 02:27 PM So terribly disappointed in the lack of G8 exposure/announcements at the show. Other than the big show last year to announce that the G8 was coming, GM/Pontiac has done a really lackluster job of promoting what could be (or should be) their best car yet.
I'm hoping that they don't do a repeat of the poor marketing that they did for the GTO.
Attorneyguy 01-17-2008, 03:18 PM On the one hand, Pontiac does a great job marketing the G8 during New Years Eve on Times Square and during the halftime shows of the bowl games on New Years Day (including some nice commercials). And yet, then we get this lackluster marketing performance (and a missed opportunity it seems). We also don't get any real marketing at Pontiac dealerships.
INCONSISTENT?
jerminator 01-17-2008, 03:32 PM They were so focused on the ZR1 and CTS-V coupe at the auto show that they forgot to get more G8's there.
enunn06 01-17-2008, 03:50 PM I have to disagree. I work in advertising and have in the past actually worked on an automotive account. Although it is frustrating to those of us who want as much information as possible to to eventually purchase the G8 and to just actually see it in person, I think Pontiac is so far on a very good road. They through the car out there last year and completely shocked the autoworld by potentially bringing in a domestic vehicle that can, at the least, compete with imports. They have kept the buzz very high by limiting information. I have gone to numerous dealerships seeking information and none of the dealers know details other than the general info that GM is releasing to them. Think about it, if you even Google for images you get nothing overall but what GM has released. It's almost unheard of to be able to keep information so tight lipped these days. I think it is a great buzz leading up to the introduction to dealerships. Plus, the way it's looking so far, the shipment of '08 models will skew towards the early adopters who have been keeping there eye on the radar for months for inventory and will be purchasing cars within days of dealers getting them in. Now one test will be whether GM learns from Apples mistake last year with the I-Phone price drop by potentially giving the finger to their early adopters. I accept that the '09 will have more features than the '08, particularly with the functionality of the LCD display. However, I would hope that any upgrades that are standard in the '09 would be able to be easily adapted in the '08 with little headache, but I guess time will tell. Especially considering that early adopters such as ourselves will be the one's selling their '09 models by driving 08's this year and no one being able to actually finding them in dealerships. The Chicago Autoshow (which is where I live and refuse to 100% commit to one until I test drive it in our grueling winter which it's arriving just in time for) is always the big horray of US auto industry (still don't understand why it trumps Detroit) so I suspect the G8 will have a larger presence there. Most likely the GTP model though for '09. I'm sure they'll show all the potential features for this model rather than the '09 base and GT leaving you to assume what would potentially carry over to those models. Otherwise they risk people holding out completely for the '09 rather than the '08.

So, basically what you are saying is they are building the anticipation/tension/demand to buy ahead of a great dealer release sometime soon?1? That will be wonderful, IF they can keep the car in stock at the dealerships to ease the demand once they finally get around to the release. This car has already slipped almost a month from the date we were supposed to be able to order one, January 2008:The_Villagers: Now admittedly, there are still a few weeks left in January, but with what the dealers know of the vehicle, they would be hard pressed to take orders! As far as the '09 having more features/options available, its the way they have done it lately, so why change? Anyone who has followed GM's marketing the last few years is fully aware of that, so yeah, you're right, we'll see more in the '09 models. But when will we see the '09 models is the big question?:dunno:

I'd have to politely disagree with this. What buzz are you talking about? There are very few people who know about the G8. Being tight lipped about a car that you want a lot of people to know about in hopes that they buy it is not a sound marketing strategy. Let's be honest, Pontiac did pretty much the same thing with the GTO, and look how that went.
Creating buzz by not giving information to your dealers is also a wacky way of going about it. How can dealers be excited about selling the car if they don't have a clue about it, when it's coming, etc.?
They created a splash last year, but failed to capitalize and build on it, IMHO. It may have caused excitement among a small group of enthusiasts, but the general public (who should be targeted for this car), knows pretty much zilch about the G8. If that's their goal, then I suppose the strategy has worked.
Just my $0.02.
70transam 01-17-2008, 05:42 PM I understand the idea of keeping potential buyers excited about the car, but I have seen many pictures as we all have and normally things look better in person. I would just think they could have two or three models there so people can get up close, and actually sit in the car! My local Pontiac dealer told me he was in Detroit last month at a GM event and they had a GT V-6 model so they could take a detailed look at it. He has been a friend of mine and not one to give me a bunch of BS. His take on the car, can't wait to have it in stock! Very comfortable inside, much more room than the Grand Prix, great looks all with a very good price. I am going to the show next Tuesday and I hope that my 2 hour ride is worth it, I don't want to go if there is only one car, sitting on a turn table.
enunn06 01-17-2008, 05:59 PM That's the thing. I don't think they're pushing the '08 G8 in hopes of selling a lot of them to the general public. That can be inferred by the limited amount they're bringing into production this year. I believe their biggest push is going to be for the '09 with trying to actually sell a lot of inventory. The '08 is for those who have been anticipating the release since last year and who are likely return customers from previous Pontiac vehicles. This years aim will be to have people see those drivers on the street and to build buzz through them and the likely positive reviews in trade publications (you notice not even trade publications have been able to review the American version yet). That way in '09, they can go full speed ahead to the masses with pushing a larger volume and more importantly start to sway the minds of those who would typically buy an import and expand their market share. Because import buyers would not buy the '08 anyway. They would have to be weened away from their belief that American cars are lousy investments. Even the potential Charger or 300 buyer that they are also targeting with the G8 is likely to be skeptical until after seeing a few on the road and reading the first years reviews. I'm sure they will start advertising more in February, but it won't be to actually sell a lot of the cars, only to let the masses know it exists. Those who are going to buy an '08 already know about it through trades, forums like this, you tube, etc.

For some reason, I don't buy into that. If the G8 is a replacement for the Grand Prix, and with Pontiac bringing a V6, it tells me that they do want to sell this to the general public and not just enthusiasts. Again, it seems like folly to me since that type of approach failed with the GTO. Market and advertise the car so people know about it.

I agree and here is my $.02. We live in a NOW generation world! If people can see it and drive it, they WANT it.....NOW! Since the current supply of G8's in the USA is currently hovering at or near zero, and most dealers know that they will likely not have more than a few until late spring, early summer, They are afraid that if they or GM promote the car now......they will be sending "ready buyers" out the door totally pissed off.
IF I get the GT 888 that I ordered in November in the next few weeks, it will likely be because when I was at the dealership, the Sales Mgr was thinking of not selling it to me so he could put it on the showroom floor.
The buyer and I both looked at him and said "Are you sure you wanna do that? This is the only one you got allocated". After he thought about it for about 3 seconds he turned green and said: "sell it"! :barf:

But you don't have your car yet, and really, don't know when you'll have your car?!? My point exactly! If they want to sell this car to the general public, they are going to have to bring into the country more than the estimated 10K MY'08 we have heard about for months! Other wise the occasional G8 you see wondering about the countryside will be nothing more than an oddity! Like a VW Bug in 1955?! As you said, its a NOW society, we want it NOW, not order a MY'09 for delivery 4 months from now! The chances of anyone except an enthusist waiting that long is laughable!:gr_jest:

Agreed. I reckon if GM had it's way they would love to have 30-40,000 G8s spread all over the US and in dealer showrooms/lots right now.
But, they don't, and they won't, based on Holdens daily capacity. Law of supply & demand.
No supply,....don't create demand. Unless you are overly fond of tar & feathers. :The_Villagers:

Ok so.. this thread is not promoting the car any more its bashing on the marketing of the car.
Since people will read this ill post my 2 cents.
You can't sell a car you don't have on dealers lots. People thought car dealers would vanish because of the internet, but they didn't. People still want to smell the fresh leather and sit in the drivers seat before making a purchase. Most importantly people want to see how the car drives.
So maybe just maybe GM/Pontiac knows that is they give the car exposure and send potential customers aimlessly to the dealerships only to find nothing, then they probably just lost a potential customer. Bottom line is you wait, you wait til dealers have something, then release all the hounds aka publishers to get positive press.
However, i also feel they should of given it some attention.
r1owner 01-17-2008, 10:04 PM So has anyone confirmed if you can actually sit in it at the show?

Catalina1971 01-18-2008, 08:41 AM Went to the Detroit Auto Show for industry day on Wed. There were three G8's at the Pontiac area. A green base model, a bright red GT and a Black GT on a turn table. I was able to sit in both the base and the red GT. Don't know if they will have the same availability for the public days but I would guess they would.
Very nice cars. Well made and very attractive. The wheels for example have a very traditional Pontiac look but are quite modern. Didn't care for the cloth seats in the base model but I have never liked cloth seats so it may be just me. The black leather in the GT was very nice. I very much liked the paint finish on the red one. The spokesman said that they would be in dealerships by March.
As others have pointed out, not much "hoopla" about the G8. Its there if you know what to look for but not hyped.
If you live near Detroit its worth the effort to go.
70transam 01-18-2008, 08:50 AM Glad to hear they have more than one car there and that we can take a close look and get inside. I have been a long time Pontiac fan and supporter, I also hope this car will be a success for GM. If it sells well it will most likely be built by our friends in Canada a few years down the road. Its off to the show for me on Tuesday, hopefully before then someone will post some pictures of the show for us?

lanned 01-18-2008, 04:49 PM Hi all,
OK well here's a handful of scaled down shots I took yesterday. Very cool that they have more than one and that you can sit inside and check it out, this is one outstanding vehicle.

Shouldn't the 2 GTs have chrome door handles? Is it to much to hope they decided against it? Or is it more likely a pre-production mistake?

It's just a thin outline trim, you can see it well on the BlackGT.
SilverFox 01-18-2008, 08:31 PM more pics of that black gt would be great?
appletonrc 01-18-2008, 09:38 PM The wheels look like painted silver? Much like the GTO?

I did a crop of the door handle at full-size to help illustrate the chrome accent.

I'll try to get some of the red one posted up, pictures didn't come out as good as I had hoped. This is probably moot as the show starts tomorrow so I bet there will be tons of great pictures posted or made otherwise available.
Very nice!!! thanks very much for sharing.
I love the red one!!! wish the interior came in 2 tone like the concept!
And the concept rims are much sweeter.
Other than that im super excited about this car and its cost.
Oh and i hope someone makes an aftermarket front grill in chrome. That would be sexy!
sccaGTO 01-18-2008, 11:54 PM Nice pics. They're better than what I have...no pics.
70transam 01-19-2008, 10:00 AM Thank you, thank you! The black car looks very good, love the bigger wheels too. What was you opinion of the two tone interior?

You know, I hope to go back and examine the interior a little more carefully. As memory serves me only the seats had the 2-tone, which I think looks really good. I just wish more of the door area also had some 2-tone like in the red interior of my GTO.
Another thing I wanted to compare with the GTO interior was the "faux suede" running along the sides of the center console and doors. This was not present, instead it's just a quality interior plastic material, which is fine.
Mike P 01-19-2008, 10:52 AM Both the onyx interior & the onyx/red interior both look lighter than a dark dark grey or black. Can someone who's seen it in person comment on this?
For me, the closer to grey the better, because it is easier to keep clean. We have a dark interior in our 2007 Trailblazer LT and the dark interior is a little harder to keep clean than the grey interior that we had in our 2006 GMC Envoy XL. And the grey still looks classy enough....
Again, can someone comment on the shade of the interior? Light? Dark?
G8BLBYU 01-19-2008, 11:27 AM Very nice! Thanks for the pics!
r.penguin@comcast.net 01-19-2008, 01:04 PM The 2 tone rearview side mirrors are interesting.

The clear lights do not look as BAD as i thought but i think i still like the regular lights on the base model.

r1owner 01-19-2008, 08:38 PM Wait... these red inserts are not production are they?
BBBBGXP 01-19-2008, 09:00 PM Wait... these red inserts are not production are they?
Yeah, they are!:thumbsup:Part of the Premium Package option with leather seats and inserts of either black or red. I believe they are available with only certain exterior colors thou; red, black and white, if I remember correctly. Cool HUH?:bubbrubb:

i think it could be available with Magnetic Grey aswell, just leaves orange and blue without the coloured insert option
for those that want more colour in the interior, the silver strip across the dash, gear selector and steering wheel all have coloured versions available (orange or red).
not sure whats going to be available as dealer options, but i'm sure what isn't will be imported anyway
asylum 01-19-2008, 10:17 PM too much flash in all those photos :( spoils most of them
r1owner 01-19-2008, 10:18 PM So is this car...

The color known as Magnetic Gray Metallic or is it the show car color from last year?
r.penguin@comcast.net 01-19-2008, 10:21 PM Magnetic Gray Metallic on a V6.

Thanks! I'm feeling it!
It looked like ****e on the G8 site.
My Dad was up there at the show today... called me and said that I'm going to like that car... he knows I've been jonesing for one forever...
He said the ZR1 is amazing.
Gunny Highway 01-20-2008, 12:15 AM A little more fender gap than I would like. Also, not a big fan of the GT wheels. I'm thinking some black TT2s would look good. A car that big needs a dish/lip on the wheels.
I would say the interior is more graphite than black. It reminds me of the color of my old 00 GTP. Either way, I am digging the inserts.

Same here, I think the fender gap looks a bit much. In Audi-speak, it's like an Allroad G8. Either a liitle more profile on the tire is needed or the car needs to be lowered a tad.

Sweet i will op for more color.. RED seems to be my choice!
I personally hope that we can get RIMS Like these in 19in - the ones on the RED CTS

That is actually a Commodore HSV GTS. Those same wheels were on the G8 "concept" from Chicago last year I believe.

Not sure if they are going to be available here though.

You might be right about that one.

appletonrc 01-20-2008, 06:44 PM That has probably been the best coverage of the G8 in Detroit I've seen. For a car that seemed to have a lot of attention last year I thought it would have a bit more press than it got at the show.

those are 20's, and thats not a CTS, it's a HSV GTS.

Yup, same rims that were on the G8 show car. They can be yours for $4,000 w/o tires, not sure if thats before shipping from Australia or not.
BBBBGXP 01-20-2008, 10:09 PM J Grand, is it just me, or did the black GT not have the funky shaft antenna. It appeared the red one had it, but the pics don't seem to show one on the black model?
J_Grand 01-20-2008, 10:32 PM yeah there was an antenna on the black GT, but it looked like they removed it.
BBBBGXP 01-20-2008, 10:47 PM They look a lot better without them!
Slightly off topic.. but 2008 Chevy Lumina SS looks a lot like this car!

CTS-V 01-21-2008, 06:02 AM I just can't get into Cadillac as a performance car. I had a choice between an STS and the Bonnie SSEi. After driving both for 5 days, it was no contest. :sneaky:
LOL CTS-V has nothing to do with an STS. I had the old CTS-V - it was a 4 door Corvette. 0-60 in the 4's which no street FWD is going to touch. F1 tires and a racing suspension from the factory. 6 speed manual. 400 small block hp. I loved my Bonnie you could not race it like they do the V.
The new CTS-V is the fastest sedan bar none - including AMG and M. How's that for a performance car?
I cannot wait to get a better look at the G8's at the autoshow.

Yeah same car built by Holden in Australia- only difference is front end/hood and spoiler. And probably interior options as well.
need4spd 01-31-2008, 02:58 PM Just wondering if anyone else noticed the following:
a. On the tach, there is no red line shown, nor any indication by markers of the red line?
b. On the base G8 (V6) there is no rocker panel molding between the front and rear tire (no ground effects)? On some V6 photos they have them, some others they don't (at Detroit, they are not present) - so do only the V8's get them, or are the part of the premium or other packages?

a. with the rev limiter intact you cannot explode the engine - I've noticed lack of redline on a lot of new vehicles
b. is probably part of being a GT as the sport and premium packages (only ones available) do not list any specific paneling.
