Just a reminder that the last date for street legal drags in Fontana is on Saturday, 12/6. According to their website, the drags for Sunday 12/7 have been cancelled, so this is your last chance this year to get a timeslip for your G8. :)

I just got my VMS ECM & TCM tune and can't wait to try it out. Based on what Scott ran against me with his VMS tune, I'm pretty confident that I'll need to use my helmet this time. :wink2:

And who knows, it might actually be cooler than it was last time.

Let us know if you plan to go. It's great having a group of cars go.

Vince,

BTW, what's the RPMs for your WOT shift points? I got my dash hawk and my 1-2 shift is 6600. No wonder I'm hitting the rev limiter.

Are we going to meet the same place next time for Fontana? Whatever that thing was I ate was worth 5 hp the rest of the day. Maybe it didn't help the car much, but I was certainly faster walking around the pits and it did prevent tailgaters.

Scott,

I have to verify the shift points, but I don't think they're as high as yours.

I'm open to meet at the same place. Unless someone else has any other suggestions.

Vince

6600 is not good. You out to see the graph from the dashhawk. I don't want to break something. If I knew how to save it in a format that I could paste in here I would.

Is there any user adjustability (like shift points) with the flash express thing. I guess maybe I don't quite understand what VMS sends you.

VMS sends a USB flashdrive with the software needed to be installed on a laptop. They also send the FlashXpress cable, which connects the laptop to the car.

Basically, after installing the software, you download the ECM and TCM files from your car to your laptop. You then email these to VMS and they modify it with their tune and send the files back to you.

You then use the same program to upload the files to your car.

In your case, if they already have your files, they should be able to modify the files and email them to you. But, then you'll need the program and cable to upload them to your car.

Okay, folks, one more week to the last Street Legal drags at Fontana. Let us know if you'll be there. I think we only have three cars confirmed to be going.

You know I will be there! Are we meeting at Carl's again? That would be fine with me.

I brought mine, but since I didn't break into the 13's, I didn't use it. Scott used his after his first run showed he was in the 13's.

I'm hopeful that I'll use mine this time. :wink2:

BTW, the last Street Legal Drags were done the day after Halloween and the number of cars seemed low. We were guessing that it was because a lot of people were hung over from partying the night before.

Since this is the last drags for the year and with Sunday being cancelled, it may be a pretty crowded day, so we may not get as many runs as we did last time. I'm just speculating, but thought I'd mention that possibility to folks in case they may be expecting the same low crowds as last time.

I'm still going. :driving:

I installed the Roto Fab tonight. I just came back from a little drive and I don't know quite what to think yet. It is LOUD, but not loud in the very pleasant way of my two old tri-power Pontiacs. To me the syncopation sounds just a touch ricey --- as if you're in the middle of two civics racing. It always concerned me that there was such a tortured air path in the stock air box. It told me that the engineers were going to great lengths and much effort to quiet it down.

My butt dyno always thinks that a noisier car is slower so I have no idea what to think until I get the VMS retune and go back out to the same place with the dashhawk or we happen to have nearly identical weather conditions at Fontana.

Maybe it’s just an old age thing with me. It’s just like I never hear a new Shelby GT 500 that sounds remotely as good as a 66 427 Cobra or a C5 or C6 that sounds nearly as good as a 66 or 67 427 Vette, etc.

Most of you guys that are 1/2 to 1/3 my age will probably be just fine with it. In fact, by now, there are probably quite a few out there that have never been in a carbureted car much less an old 3x2 bbl.

Hmm, now I'm really curious to hear how that sounds. I wonder if the ram air intakes that have just been announced sound any better.

This is pretty close.

What ram air intake? That's another thing I noticed is that there must be a more efficient way to duct air to the intake side of the Roto Fab air box.

There were two ram air intakes announced earlier this week or late last week. I think one was Vararam. I forget who the other one was.

Thanks. These make a lot of sense. This is how we did 40 to 50 years ago and it worked fine.

It's essentially the same thing we're trying to do, but into the throttle body instead of a carburetor.

I think so. I was planning on getting there a little earlier to get something to eat for breakfast, then head out to the track to line up for tech shortly after 6am. Tech starts at 7am, but considering that this is the last track day for the year, I'm betting it'll be busy.

It'll be no problem...we'll just turn left into the track like we did last time. :wink2:

I forgot I only needed the inside for the restroom. I did go through the drive through.

On another topic; today I had a neighbor ask me what I did to my car. He said he heard me from inside his house (he has a 300C). He was outside the next time I came by at full throttle and could really hear it. To his ears it was much louder. I agree with the much louder part although I thought most of that was inside the car.

Hmm, maybe someone needs to video us when we run so we can hear how much louder it is now compared to last time. Our cars are so quiet when going down the track from the outside that it's hard to tell that we were even racing.

I got my VMS tune done for the Roto Fab today so I'm ready for Saturday.

I'm going to try to get out later tonight with the dashhawk and see if I can see any difference. Problem is that these 'summer' tires mean warm pavement and the pavement sure isn't warm tonight. However, traffic congestion is way too heavy at any other time of the day or night for any fooling around.

How many are going this Saturday? We were missing two colors last time, but I think we have a MGM coming this time. I can't remember what else we were missing.

I think we didn't have any Ignition Orange, Liquid Red, or Pacific Slate last time.

Did you get your rev limiter issue resolved?

scotth3886
12-05-2008, 12:16 AM
I forgot about ignition orange, but I thought we had a liquid red. Oh well, my memory.

Traffic has been too heavy to get a WOT 1-2. I'll try in a few hours

I finally got a chance to drive it after I did the VMS retune for the Roto Fab. Tranny is better than its ever been. It is soft and smooth at light throttle and barks off a decent amount of scratch on the WOT 1-2 shift. However, the 1-2 shift is a bit too early now so we took it too far the other direction. I'll see if Kirk can get me a minor readjustment out before tomorrow and i'll be set.

I have to leave for about an hour. I'm going to skip fedex and hang on the cable until Monday and hope Kirk doesn't get upset at me for doing that. I have two slightly different versions of the tranny tune and I would kind of like to try them both at the track. Maybe I'll bring my laptop too.

I don't need it now, just thought maybe the cable you had was yours to keep. :wink2:

I know I'm going to need it if and when I get a CAI, maybe one of the ram air/OTR intakes, but that isn't going to happen right away.

See you at Carl's Jr. tomorrow morning. Oh, I should have my laptop with me tomorrow as well if you need it. You'll just need to make sure you save the files or email them to yourself.
