Anybody know how the exhaust sounds for the V-8 model? My 06 Grand Prix with the 5.3 V-8 has a great rumble to it, hope the G8 is the same. Would it be similar to the Commodore SS, not sure about the spelling on that one!

yes it will be similar to the ss, or ve ss for that matter. its a good subtle sound/note, and with minor modifications could sound amazing! not sure if the gxp gp is dual exhaust all the way back, but the g8gt will be

Thanks chill for the info, my exhaust on the GXP is not a true dual system but it really sounds great, I wish my 70 Trans Am had the same bark!

get some free flowing cats, mufflers, OTR induction and have 3" pipes all the way back, then you'll hear a good sounding tone. Plus the added HP you'll get with a tune should put the G8GT above 400+

I'm gonna give it a day or so, listen to some drivebys, and then replace the center muffler with either straight pipes or these: http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10001_10002_744882_-1_10265

No drone for me. Been there with a Borla on a corvette. I put the SW on the GTO.

Here is a sound file of my SSV with Pacemaker 4 into 1 - 1 3/4" long tube ceramic coated headers, 4" hi flow cats and 3" twin stainless steel catback exhaust. The factory exhaust is just too quiet-

Now that sounds good. From what I have read, several are complaining of a bad drone at cruising speeds in the 1,800-2,000 rpm range. Do you have an issues with drone from your set up and what type of muffs are you running.

That sounds good! Very deep sounding like the Spintech system I have on my Roadmaster.

JKGMH: That is an awesome sounding exhuast system! If I don't like the sound of the stock (or just want better flow / horsepower) that system is totally one I'd want.

Also, like VERT asked..... How much drone do you have inside the car? Especially at normal cruising RPMs? Is it bad (as in not good)? I too have heard that the 3" exhaust systems have a decent amount of drone.....

And, what kind of mufflers are those?

Thanks in advance!!!

I like the sound of the one in the clip. My daughter thinks it will be cool to ride to school with her mom with a car sounding like that. We should have a couple choices soon on headers and exhaust soon. I have SW cat backs on the GTO and love the sound. It's only loud when you stand on it. I hope to have something similar on the G8.

Kooks and a good cat back on the G8 FTW.

Not having been a part of the GTO knowledge base what does the Flowmaster perform like on them? I have always like them as they sound the same from day one to day 1000.. No packing...

Anyone?

Well I just talked to Flowmaster and had a great conversation with a gentleman there. I am hoping they can come up with a great performing system that will also offer that great Flowmaster look and sound I've come to love.

Edit: What they would like to see everyone do if you're interested in a Flowmaster system is to call them and tell them to build it. The more people they get wanting one the better chance that they'll build a complete system.

both trims will have dual exhaust, but the GT will have 4 exhaust tips whereas the G8 will have 2.

Flowmaster is for trucks and Mustangs. I hate the sound of their mufflers.

You want your car to stand out and not just hum and drone like a pickup. Flowmaster's tips look like junk, too. Corsa doesn't use a packing material. Sure, they are more expensive, but they sound unique and will let your car stand out. Oh, no drone on the highway is cool as hell!

That might be, but I lease a car for 3 years so putting a million dollar exhaust on a car makes no sense for me. Plus I like the hollow metal sound that the Flowmaster gives. Different strokes for different folks...

I doubt they put the work into the sound that they did to the 04 GTO. The 05/06 goats were nothing special in the sound department. Now 1 7/8 headers with corsa sport then you've got something to listen to!

One of the reviews (Motor Trend or C&D, I forget which) said the exhaust on the GT is 4-2-1-2-4, so it uses a common catalytic converter, unlike the GTO which is true duals. They also criticized the GT exhaust for being "too quiet." Good news to those of us who live on the open road (gotta hear that 230W stereo clearly), perhaps not good for the city stop light racers who complete with the ricers and their fart-can mufflers. A droning exhaust note can get very annoying at a steady 75mph on the interstate highway for hours at a time.

The Gt has 2 cats. It has one resonator.

Educate me please. What does a resonator do? Is it just another muffler? Can you legally remove them? I know my Dad had two resonators removed from his Impala SS and it did not seem to make any change to anything.

The primary purpose of a resonator is to remove low pitched sounds from the exhaust.

Why anyone would want to reduce that is beyond me...:nonono::nuts:

LOL

More noise is my moto! My bikes are loud as schitt without being annoying! :biggrin2:

Or do you mean just not annoying to you???

No... I baffles in my exhaust so while they are loud they aren't straight pipes that make your brain hurt. The Vmax sounds like a small block V8 with exhaust and the SV is thumpy and loud but subdued.

Hard to explain really.

BlueGoat
03-02-2008, 07:19 AM
I recall someone complaining that the G8 exhaust was not loud enough. But remember that some of us are buying one for a road (highway) car, not a street racer. Hours upon hours of exhaust drone will fry your brain and drown out that 230W Blaupunkt. Which brings me to another point: why put a really decent stereo system in a car if the exhaust is so loud you can't appreciate it? You gonna sit in your driveway and listen to your MP3 catalog? Not me. My home system is better (although my couch doesn't smell like leather). :gr_jest:

Thanks for that post. The exhaust is quite similar to my GTO -- nicely quiet at low RPM highway speeds in 6th gear, yet snarls on throttle. There are also some nice pics of the engine compartment and some of the better side shots I've seen that gives an idea of the proportions of the car (reminds me of the Audi A8s and Bimmers). Sweet.

An optional factory-installed (perhaps dealer? not sure) supercharger that will be covered by the vehicle warranty.

Sounds like there's a switch to change the direction of flow to the mufs or something of that nature. Hopefully someone has some input on this system. would be cool to have. Leaving for work in the moring and its whisper quiet then once on the hichway, bam flick of a switch!

I'd assume it would be from the factory. I wouldn't trust any dealer around me on installing a supercharger system.

I would love a supercharger system on the GT or GXP

The British have kicked both our arses.... they offer a "factory" supercharged versions of the SS / G8, including an optional "rip shifter" and a better exhaust!! Top Gear drove a Monaro / GTO with the "factory" supercharger and it was going sideways everytime they tried to put their foot down!

There is probable a web link somewhere with a video showing their test drive. I'll try to find it.

has anyone else in the US heard of this VXR8 they sell in Britan?

FLowmaster has a typcial sound that is different than other brands...There is no dramatic popping....but a slight pop ..while blipping the throttle....for having the other mufflers in place..it doenst resonate..and has a deeper tone.....i will probally work on high flow cats when they are avail..and work my way into a x pipe custom sytem which will be much more flowing...and obviously louder..i just wanna find the sweet spot..of power and sound..withought interior resonace..i dont like that for my style of driving

The straight pipe mod where you remove the middle twin muffler has the pop.
