: Brake dust
CanadianEh 12-16-2008, 12:33 PM Anyone else having a lot of problem with the stock brake pads making a lot of dust that is sticking to the paint? The only way I can get it off is with rubbing compound that takes off the wax every time I wash it. When I asked the dealer about it they just said to bad and GM will not cover the ****ty pads they put on my car.
Monaro@JHP 12-16-2008, 01:25 PM I did not notice the issue..., I guess all BMW and Mercedes got “****ty pads” too:)
Cashed 12-16-2008, 01:43 PM no brake dust problem here. as a matter of fact, I was just giving a co-worker, who drives a Mercedes, as hard time because their front wheels are always covered in brake dust...not matter when the car gets washed!
G8 Ray 12-16-2008, 01:46 PM I've not had this problem either. I also user a micro fiber towel to wipe them off frequently too.
CanadianEh 12-16-2008, 01:47 PM Dunno maybe they only did it in 09, I am worried about it ruining my paint and when you buy a car that costs that much you shouldnt have to go out n buy new pads a week after you get it
jester8798 12-16-2008, 09:41 PM I have had the same problem. I have to make sure to wash it pretty regularly otherwise it has built up like you are describing.

need4spd 12-16-2008, 11:22 PM I get zero brake dust, I can go weeks without even noticing any. Just using regular car soap cleans them up perfectly. I can not believe I lived all those years with BMW dust :(
I even changed our volvo to ceramic pads after owning the G8 after seeing how dust free pads can be.
Not sure why two of our bothers are having problems with brake dust though. Maybe it is an issue with the 18" wheels and the finish or lack there of?
done12many2 12-16-2008, 11:50 PM I get absolutely no build up at all which simply amazes me after the experiences I have had with previous cars.
inTIMidator 12-17-2008, 01:18 AM Brake dust wise, my wheels are clean. Cleanest I've ever owned, so far...
acjames 12-17-2008, 08:23 AM no problems here. Im really happy about that because it was terrible on my previous cars.
CanadianEh 12-17-2008, 08:42 AM I was talking to the dealer again and he said he is gunna look at it so atleast thats a start
nathan60 12-27-2008, 08:06 PM he said sticking to the paint, its a white car thing, my white mustang had these orange spots on the paint,so does are white g8.its little specks has to be scrubbed off.i guess its from the pads?
Are you sure it's brake dust sticking to the car?
I assume you are in Canada, (great country with great people)? Is this just happening since it has snowed? There is some really nasty chemical stuff (calcium cloride and magnesium cloride that will eat through anything including metal) used to melt snow and ice in places where it gets really cold. This could just be some road crap/grime you are driving through?
I've never heard of brake dust adhering to or doing what you discribe. I have an '08 GT and have not seen this problem.
Polishing compound on clearcoat!? Be careful!!
Just a thought, Ah!

Sounds like rail dust. Apparently when shipping by rail small specs of iron from the wheel-track friction can settle on the paint and rust. Google "rail dust" for more info.
CanadianEh 12-28-2008, 02:07 PM Yea im in canada but I know it had nothing to do with the road, our 2002 sierra has nothing on it and it spends more time in the snow and slush. I am sort of confused by it because it is not really on the wheels as much as the paint, if it is coming off the pads I would think the wheels would be covered in it. The dealership told me it was brake dust and that is what it looks like.
The train car thing is interesting but that is not the problem, it was not in the paint when I bought the car and when I use rubbing compound to remove it.. it just comes back.
GXPaycheck 12-28-2008, 07:14 PM Have you tried a clay bar?
BlueJacket 12-28-2008, 07:15 PM No brake dust at all for me.
CanadianEh 12-28-2008, 07:41 PM Have you tried a clay bar?
Nope never heard of it. Is it something you can buy at the store or something?

I would give Adams a try.

DRCUSTOMPARTS 12-28-2008, 08:57 PM I used some spray wax on my car today and there were large dark particles on the bumper cover/fender behind the rear wheels. It wasn't tar but it took some elbow grease to remove it, and it wasn't tire rubber because I surely haven't been burning up my new tires.
GXPaycheck 12-29-2008, 06:08 AM You can pick up a kit at most any auto parts store or Wal-mart. Adam's stuff is real good. Easy to use. Check out detailing forums to see how to use it. Lots of videos out there as well.
Clay will pull a lot of stuff out of the paint.
CanadianEh 12-29-2008, 09:53 AM I am going to look for it and give it a try. I am waiting for a couple clips to come in for the side molding and when I take it to get them put on I will be getting them to look at it and fix it. No way am I going to have black crap all over my brand new white car every time I take it for a drive. :cursin::bs:
speeder 12-29-2008, 03:16 PM No brake dust on my wheels or the car finish, ever. Have 9K on the odometer.
nathan60 12-29-2008, 11:07 PM i dont think hot white is clearcoat, could be wrong though.
I have no brake dust issues at all. Cleanest running pads I have ever had on a car and I don't baby mine. Try changing the wax you use on them.
Are you seeing this front and rear? What kind of tire dressing are you using? Might not be brake dust and just dressing holding on to road grime and what little dust may be there.
Mach 5 12-30-2008, 12:30 AM i dont think hot white is clearcoat, could be wrong though.
All colors have clear coat.
The stock pads produce VERY little dust even when punished.
Brake dust shows up on the wheels. If you have paint issues you need to look elsewhere.
Try Meguiars Non-Abrasive Paint Cleaner (http://meguiarsdirect.com/detail/MEG+A3016) and most of this should just wipe right off.
After having white cars for years, seeing black grime behind the tires on the body panels is typically due to tire dressing sling-off, picked up oil from the road, and road grime.
breakaway 12-31-2008, 07:29 AM Is it only on the sides of the car? behind the wheels? Also check all the leading edges of door seams behind the front wheels to see if it is more concentrated there as it will collect more rapidily on forward facing edges.
CanadianEh 12-31-2008, 10:12 AM its on the side of the car behind all 4 wheels and goes about half way back the driver and passenger doors and from the rear wheels to the back bumper and around the edge a bit. I know for a fact it is not off the road
kjac081 12-31-2008, 10:35 AM its on the side of the car behind all 4 wheels and goes about half way back the driver and passenger doors and from the rear wheels to the back bumper and around the edge a bit. I know for a fact it is not off the road
do you use tire shine of any sort? If it is put on too thick, it will sling off your tire and adhere to the places you mention. this will allow brake dust and other dirt to get trapped in it.
I could be wrong, but try going a week without any tire dressing and see if things change.
CanadianEh 12-31-2008, 01:52 PM Have yet to put anything on the tires of my G8 for a dressing, just washed them with soap and water. I got the car to the dealer today and they also have no idea whats going on.
nathan60 01-02-2009, 03:13 PM brake dust flies every where thats why some people use dust masks sometimes or if drum brakes they wet down the shoes first.
