Well since this is off topic. What is your favorite beer? Now I am drinking Bell's Expedition Stout. Nice brew. It leaves a dark residue on the bottom of the glass. My next favorite has to be Storm King by Victory Brrewing.

My main beer is any version of LaBatt, followed by Yeungling. Smithwicks from Ireland is high up on my list for a medium dark.

Distelhauser Pils...

One trip to Germany and the US beer scene just ain't what you remembered. Spend a good part of your life overseas, and you won't be able to stand american beer.

I can't believe how trendy ales are....I like a good strong lager (pils anyone?)

I'm not a big fan of dark beer. I do like the taste of some German beer that I have tried - but some are very filling. I think a few of my favs are:

Hoegarrden
Sam Adams Octoberfest
Blue Moon

However - I do TRY many beers. There have been some weird ones I have ended up enjoying like Leinie's Apple Spice. And there have been some I hate (Leinie's Summer Wheat = tastes like a whole lemon is in the bottle). Oh, Pumkin Ale by Blue Moon was terrible too. My favorite Mexican beer is LasNegros (sp?).

If I hear a recommendation enough I usually will search it out and try it.

Negro Modelo is the last authentic Vienna style lager made on earth. Good stuff.

I started making my own beer at home summer of 2007. I am not going to pick just one and call it a favorite.

Right now I have bulk aging a Russian Imperial Stout (brewed Thanksgiving) that compares very favorably to Old Rasputin.

In primary I have the current evolution of my house session beer, English malt, American hops, 3.5-4.0% ABV, just fiddling. Probably never will stop fiddling with it, just trying something a little different. It fits in the overlap between English Pale Ales like Bass and American Pale Ales like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

I also have a wit in Pirmary, "Wit Men Can't Jump" was a regional finalist in Sam Adams' long shot contest, I think in 2006. First wit I ever liked, finally had some fermenter space. The brewer that came up with it and I belonged to the same home brewing club for a little while.

Finally I have a Roggenbier (grains ~25% rye) fermenting under pressure. Yeast are happier critters at pressures a little above atmospheric, they work harder and clean up after themselves quicker. I used Fuggles and Challeneger hops (Mosher recipe) so more spicy and less floral, with some coriander and some black pepper to round out the seasoning. I'll be making this again, it is about a third of the way done and delicious.

If you are thinking about homebrewing beer feel free to PM me. It is very easy to make really good beer- as long as you don't need to ship it cross country, or have every batch taste exactly the same for 115 years running. I have nothing but respect for the brewmasters at Budweiser and Miller. Light American lager is a difficult style for the pros to brew. Consistenly brewing the same Light American Lager year in and year out is over the top.

Commercial currently in the fridge I have Guiness, Hoegaarden wit and New Belgium Springboard.

For those of you looking to expand your palates, there is a whole universe of beer out there.

If you palate is "currently calibrated" to talk about the differences between Budweiser and Miller, I am not going to talk any smack about that. But here is where to look next...

The closest European relatives to American lagers are the pilsners. Czeck Budvar. Pilsner Urquell. Stella Artois.

But the difference is adjuncts. Miller buys a whole lot of corn, every year. Budweiser buys a whole lot of rice, every year. Those adjunct grains ferment out completely, they 'dry' the flavor of the beer, contributing a little alcohol, but thinning out the body, for less mouth feel. It isn't bad or good, it is the style. On a hot enough day far enough south of the Mason Dixon line, I'll order a Bud.

NB: When you go to beertown.org to download the style guidelines published by the American Homebrewer's Association, bear in mind that "Light American Lager" as a style is talking about "Miller High Life" not Miller lite. Bud Heavy yes, Bud light is is not a style. Bud longnecks and real Miller and real Michelob (and real Coors) are Light American Lager, the style.

Bud light, Coors light, Miller Lite, natural light, well, they are either beer or your diabetic horse is pregnant.

Try the CB and SA and PU. They are barley only, so more mouth feel and less dryness than you are used to. Softer water too, so the brewers use a lot more hops to get "the same" bitterness, but those Euro beers are loaded up with the co-isomers of the lab measured alpha-acids for a much better rounded flavor. Just try one pint of one on each of three nights...

I can drink some beer now, but my daily limit on the style "European Pilsner" is one pint only. Just let me know what you do or don't like about those and I'll point you at something you can have twelve of.

Imported beers are too expensive for me but there are a lot of Aussie Beers I don't mind.
Hahn Premium tops my list as well as Tooheys and Carlton Cold. Beer ads are creative as well..posted on the ls1 site a few times

Coopers Pale Ale (or Sparkling Ale) made not far from where live, little cloudy for some but tastes damn nice

or if i want something more clean and fresh, Tooheys Extra Dry (or platinum if you planned on getting completely smashed!)

I know it had negro or something in the name ;)

My first batch just finished carbonation. I just put it in the garage to cool. I'll try some tomorrow. My "test" bottle was only half full and was over carbonated (perhaps because of too much sugar for only half a bottle). It was also from the bottom of the jug too. Didn't taste super great.

Pro: The full bottles came out crystal clear when held up to a light.

Cons: I used dark colored root beer bottles (plastic). Washed a few times before sanitizing. I really hope none of the root beer smell or taste rubs off on the beer.

I'm a big fan of Newcastle and Guinness for the more mainstream stuff and Rogue Hazlenut Brown and Stone's Oaked Bastard Ale for the smaller breweries. Shiner Bock is also pretty good. Its really all about the dark beer for me :) Though I can certainly appreciate lighter beers. (None of this Bud/Coors/Miller BS)

Take note Yanks who don't like the finish, the after taste of the Euro pilsners. If Stella leaves a bad taste that you can't really describe on the back of your tongue, like wood or sand paper or something you can't quite put your finger on, go have a Foster's or try Steinlager (New Zealand).

I'll throw in a plug for Coopers (Australia) also. The "Best Extra Stout" kicks butt, I also had out somewhere a lager or very light ale that was also quite good. I would gladly order another Coopers in any style with the expectation it will be a fine to excellent representative of the style.
