: need help launching
koolcutta 12-28-2008, 01:54 PM so before I go trying to rack up kills I want to make sure i'm driving the car right before I end up on another forum as a G8 kill
hey when you guys race are launching are you guys shifting or just using sport mode.
I went out for some late night fun in the dessert and could not get the car to chirp the the tires with esp off. every time I launched it would just hook and go. I have a z28 that has less power then this and when i step on it would lay down a fierce tire squeal before grabbing what gives.
also is there a rev limiter on the car cause with no redline. I don't know whens the best time to up shift hence i think I bounced off of it last night at least I hope thats why i had the sudden deceleration when I got above 6k.
Blackrider 12-28-2008, 02:42 PM The reason you have trouble spinning the tires is because of the Torque Management, it limits the amount of torque going to the rear wheels. As far as the fuel cut off I'm pretty sure its 6000RPM stock. I take it you're shifting in manual mode? The response time from is not the greatest when in manual mode, its a fine line of executing the perfect shift and bouncing off the rev limiter. I would say leave it in sports mode and let it do what it does.
Vigilante375 12-29-2008, 08:44 AM You could sit here and read about how to launch your car or you could go out and do what WILL help you launch your car. Its called PRACTICE. That is the best way to learn your car. Like they say, practice makes perfect.
koolcutta 12-30-2008, 12:46 AM Yea just trying to make sure I don't break it while practicing My last muscle car was a 91 z28 350 with a 700r4 only torq management I had was my foot. so this car feels weired cause its fast but yet its not a bruiser off the line

When racing you want the tires to hook up without breaking loose.
TheTugBoat 12-30-2008, 03:11 AM yeah i wouldn't be concerned with the tires not squeeling...thats a good thing bro
what are your mods? before you go out hunting make sure you atleast get a tune.
when your street racing try and go from a roll, it puts less strain on the car, resulting in less broken parts. especially when your out in the middle of nowhere.
if you do have to launch...brake stand to 1200rpm in sport mode, soon as you get green pedal to the floor, and when the car shifts itself into 3rd pull down on the shifter so it holds 3rd in manual mode...if your not way ahead/behind by the top of third its time to shut down anyways cause you're probably going around 100mph on surface streets.
TheTugBoat 12-30-2008, 05:38 AM WTF..... lets get sexy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's sad that we rule th world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:wink2:
what?
\ lets get real
huh?
NYG8GT 12-30-2008, 12:45 PM If you cant get tire spin from a dead stop with the ESP off, youre doing something wrong or your car has something wrong with it. I was able to spin like a mo-fo in the 09 I test drove that had the 19's on it. And my 08 is the same way with the 18's and summer tires.
You want just a hint of wheel spin to help get the revs up. And by a hint, I really mean just half a revolution or so ;) Good luck, and god damn I cant wait for spring to get here!
cobrakid 12-30-2008, 02:13 PM Here is what I would do, so far after being an owner for less than a month (wife's car also)....but I am a drag racer.
Keep the car cool at the track with fluids up to temp. Remove engine cover for track.
Go up toward the line at the track.....go around the water......
power brake the car in manualM1 do not over tach....just get tires a little warm/clean.
proceed to the line. Slap into Sport mode......slight brake stall to 1200-1400, shallow stage, and hammer it to the floor on last yellow.
With only slight wheel spin, should click off some 13.6s-9s?????????
I made my own CAI tube, that works great, removed heat shields and did free mods, and car is pulling consistent 4.6s on DashHawk....and runs real strong.
Still a dog outta the gate, and shifting without a tune, but I am holding out for a handheld....hopefully in March 09? Let us Pray.... LOL.
Good luck....any opinions on that?
when tuned, if I can hook decent, I believe that I will turn the idle down slightly and flat punch it with no
brake stall.......this I feel shocks/flashes the converter a little harder for a harder launch.
My Jeep launches better flat punching than stalling.
Cloudwraith 12-30-2008, 02:48 PM The G8 is balanced pretty well and the summer only tires that usually come on the 19s have some pretty soft rubber on them. As others said grippin and gettin is a good thing in terms of winning races but you might want to actually go back and look at your launch point. We had a customer here who thought they weren't spinning tires when they floored it from a stop and after some trial and error and adding some timing down low in the launch area we started noticing some black patches from all the launches we were doing. Turns out that the tires were spinning just not making much noise.
holyrollerz 02-10-2009, 01:15 PM Still learning my G8. what's the difference between Manual and Sport mode? how do I put it into each mode?
Cloudwraith 02-10-2009, 01:19 PM Sport mode is moving the shift lever to the right and leaving it there. Manual is moving it over to the right and then up and down.

Nothing wrong with his car. My car rarely spins it's tires at launch with ESP off. It has a lot to do with altitude and humidity. It's always high humidity down here and it makes the tires a little more sticky.
holyrollerz 02-10-2009, 02:26 PM Sport mode is moving the shift lever to the right and leaving it there. Manual is moving it over to the right and then up and down.
so in sport mode, the car will shift by itself? What's the difference then between Sport mode and leaving the car in Drive? Higher shift points?
wreckwriter 02-10-2009, 02:30 PM Biggest mistake a lot of people are making is trying to race with traction control on, turn it OFF. also, let the car do the shifting, manual mode is horribly slow.
holyrollerz 02-10-2009, 02:40 PM so if i'm understanding right, the best way to launch is traction control off, and put the car in sports mode. Is that correct?
Can someone answer what the difference is between Sport mode and leaving it in Drive?

You are understanding right. Just floor it from idle. If you get a lot of spin adjust your foot speed as needed.
Sport mode holds gears a bit differently. On a stock car I feel its a bit more responsive than drive. Its not much different on a straight line run really, drive is fine too, just don't use manual mode.
After you get tuned your tuner should recommend one mode or the other for various driving situations.

My car, when stock, would not spin the tires.

+1
mine is stock, it gets only a nice chirp or two and its gone! I don't get audible wheelspin or smoke unless I turn off ESP and keep the left foot on the brake. Doing a ESP-off launch in D, Sport, or M1 it will get about the same as mentioned, a nice chirp and that's it. once you tune and change the tq mgmnt then it really will spin more, at least thats what everyone says. I'm too poor for one anyways, and want a handheld if I spend 4-500$.

Well then you better change your avatar...

My car also, when it was stock, with ESP turned off, would not squak the tires.
...
MagGrG8 02-18-2009, 02:52 PM Mike - I live in MI too. It must have been hot as hell out when you tried. When I was test driving one the dealer told me to get on it. Scared the ***** out of me. I have never owned a sports car before, and was not used to having the tires let loose like that. Im assuming temperature is why everyone is getting different results.
cobrakid 02-18-2009, 03:07 PM .....temperature, and tire pressure has a lot to do with it.
Stock, I could take my wife's 09 out with it warmed up on a decent day, and no spinnage from a flat punch.
On a 30* day, or with tires inflated above 38, it would roast them.
My best runs then were....slight burnout, in Sport mode, with TC on!, slight chirp....then it would kick in....gone.
Still showed 0-60s in 4.5s, and 1/4s 13.1s@108ish. (via the DashHawk)
Now with the tune, they are fighting for their little rubber lives. LOL
Do a home-made CAI, the free mods, and definately get a tune.
I have about $600 in my mods, and if it doesn't go 12.6s-12.7s first couple of passes,
Ima gonna be peeesed!
For what it is worth, I have practiced with different launch techniques with this G8, and my post above still holds true for me.
I do have to do a good burnout now, with about 34lbs in the rear to get a good solid hook.
Also...... DashHawk is saying 0-60 4.2s, and 1/4s 12.6s@111mph.
TRACK OPENS MARCH 1ST!!!!! YYYYAAAAYYYYYY!!!!!!
good Luck !
