: Kinda weird for my first post but question for southwest part of CT.
IntellEDgent 12-30-2008, 01:13 PM Hello and i`m glad to be a member of this forum, i`ve been looking to get a G8 for a while and with my promotion hopefully i`ll be able to have one in my driveway.:) Anyway i know this is weird being my first post but none the less it is my biggest concern at the moment.
My job is giving me an opp. to work in the danbury mall. The GNC there is no.1 in the company for the nation in terms of sales so money will be good, my thing is i live in south windsor(75mi./hour and a half drive if i`m lucky) so i`m well aware of the suck that this can produce. However with my recent promotion i`ll be making enough money to move out on my own(assuming rent can be from $500-800 a month and something i want to do). So my question is, where the hell should i move? I want to me alittle more then 3/4 of the distance between SW and danbury, this way i`m not too far into the state.
I was looking into the minortown, middlebury, naugatuck, watertown and inward area. From what my step father said that would be avoiding most of the BS traffic in hartford and 84. Basically i don`t know that part of CT at all and i`m looking for a town that`s fairly quiet. A cheap, keep to themselves kind of town if you will. I pretty much have until the end of the week to make my choice of going there or staying in the one in the manchester mall, however i can bare the drive for a month or two if need be so i`m not going to move out next week or two unless something popped up in my favor. Sorry for the novel and any help would be GREAT.
Thanks in EDvance,
ED
pic18 12-30-2008, 09:05 PM I say stay at home and save money until you can put a downpayment on a house. Everybody wants to move out and have a place of their own, but why pay rent? That's $500 to $800 a month you will never get back. If you can get the same money staying closer to home, I think you should.

This man is not wrong... just make sure you actually save the money...

One would think if he could get the same money while staying at his parents, he would... right? His question is about making MORE money, which requires moving out.
In order to really balance this, one has to ask a few questions:
1.) How much MORE money is it?
2.) What other debt/bills do you have, as this helps define if you can support yourself.
3.) Is this a promotion as well as more money?
4.) Do you want to live out there? Are there things for you to do, do you know people out there?
There is a reason I asked all these questions. If its a lot more money and a promotion, its bettering your "career" and its an investment in yourself, which can justify rent expenditures. If its just a little more money, same position, then its probably not worth it.
If you've never lived on your own, you're going to be in for a huge shock as to how expensive it truly is to live on your own. Once you sign up for all the things you're used to having, like cable, internet, phone, then sign up for the things you NEED like heat and electricity, your budget starts looking really scary. Add in money for food (I assume you don't foot the bill at home) and other odds and ends (deodorant, tooth paste, etc). Something else to factor in is that a lot of landlords require first, last, and security deposit, making an $800/mo apartment, $2400 the first month. Do you have enough savings to do this?
Some other hidden costs involved... If you don't know ANYONE that lives out there, you're going to be relying on your friends from home and you bet your ass they won't be driving out to see you all the time, so factor in fuel to drive back home on weekends.
Moving out is a big choice to make and don't make the mistake of many others when trying to figure out your budget. Make an HONEST budget. Actually buy food one week at home, just to see how much food costs. Have your parents show you their utility bills. Also call your insurance company and find out what your premium will be out there, as it may be more expensive, especially if you were getting a discount through your parent's policy.
Overall, if you don't know anyone out there, the job isn't a promotion, and you won't be making a LOT more money, I wouldn't bother. Stay at home, stash cash, and figure out how to make more money locally.

E,
I live in New Britain right now, but I'm from Woodbridge (just north of New Haven and about 15 mins from Naugatuck) and my Girlfriend is from South Windsor.
Naugatuck is a great town to live in, but there are other areas of the state that may interest you as well. If you live anywhere near rte 15 you will do OK, just remember, that rte 15 in Danbury does tend to get some pretty bad ass rush hour traffic.
Woodbridge would also be a great town for you to investigate, but last I remember hearing are a lot of people are moving out due to high taxes and cost of living. Bethany, on the other hand, borders Woodbridge as well (and also Naugatuck) and should be pretty cheap to live in comparatively.
But as for the drive, it would be a total bear coming from S.Windsor. It takes about 20 mins to get there from where I live in New Britain, and when I drive down to Branford for Drill (about 50 miles) that's a good 45min- 1 hour drive (this is with light traffic).
IntellEDgent 01-01-2009, 12:06 PM Thank you all VERY much for the responses. I found out that it would only be another 5-8k a year in commission, that noise, screw it. Also i found out that my store would still be in the same region, so i would not lose my "contacts" like my DM and my manager. So i`m staying in manchester. I do want to move out but but it`s just too much too soon.
I am aware on how much things can add up and i pay for my food and some bills at home, so i know what i would be getting into in that area. I thought about going in on a house with some friends but not too many that i know real well make alot. I guess i have to put all this on hold but once again i thank you all for the help.
