Default What I play with all day

Figured you guys might find this interesting..

Heres a fun fact, to power a 1 megawatt hospital for a full day you can use 100 football fields of windmills or 1 gram of uranium.

That is an iirradiated fuel assembly. The blue glow is known as cherenkov radiation, it's when radiation particles are traveling faster then the speed of light wthin its medium. The medium being water.

Water is a great shield from radiation, to give you an example.
We are allowed by government to receive 5 rem of radiation per year. Rem is a unit of measure. LD5030 is Lethal Dose to 50% of the population within 30 days which comes out to round 500 Rem or 1 Rad. Those fuel assemblies come within 10 feet of me and are 500 Rad, so 250,000 rem.

The water shields it down to 20MRem about. 1000 millirem in 1 rem. At 500rad if there was no water I would drop dead in a blink of an eye. Brain swelling, GI liquidation, CNS would liquidate as well. Lol.

Yes, a lot. Most plants circulate 20,000 gallons of water per minute, to cool and produce steam to spin the turbines.

I play with a nuke plant myself. Though mine is of the Naval variety, submarine type. It is interesting how they work.
