Default Tow Points? (if I'm ever stuck)

Hey Guys,

So this may be a silly question, but I've been wondering this for a while.

I drive my G8 GT all year since it's my only vehicle, which means that I drive often in snow in the winter (Living in Canada). The one thing that has always worried me is how I'd get out of a situation where I'm stuck. From what I can see there isn't any obvious tow points where I could connect a tow strap or something to help pull me out if I ever were to get stuck. There's obviously the frame or the cross member, but wouldn't the strap rip my body panels off if I were to try and get towed from there?

Any suggestions guys? I was hoping to think ahead and get some ideas on how I would do it before I ever actually need to.

(There's also the option of taking body panels off, however when you're stuck in a snow bank in -20 that's often a very last resort)

Thanks!

I haven't checked either. Would be a good thing to know.

The owners manual says to *tow with all wheels off the ground*. That would mean a *pull on* flatbed type tow truck. I myself, believe this is the only way to do it also (with this particular car).

Does that mean in the case of a parking violation the tow truck guy will be kind enough to tow it with all wheels off the ground? I had mine towed the other day and was trying to ask the guy if they towed it correctly. But since i was rather harsh with the worker, he didn't give me a straight answer. So far, nothing seems wrong with the car.

the front has two slots for tow hooks, refer owners manual towing disabled vehicle, towing from the rear without a towbar, good luck.

here in vic we only use chain tow trucks for wreaks, breakdowns are mostly towed on flatbeds.

I thought you had to disconnect the drive shaft to tow from the front...Is that the case?

yes...

I would never tow our cars other than on a flatbed!!!!

your skirts would get torn up for one and you would have to disconnect driveshaft.

flatbed is only way. I even stressed out getting it loaded to a flatbed... those two slot are too small for most hooks and tear em up pretty good. but those two are the only thing that looks like it would work.

The situation that I was thinking was getting stuck in deep snow, or worst case ending up in a ditch a little bit. In these cases I would just need a 5-10ft tow to get to cement again. I was wondering if there was any sturdy point to hook a strap/hook onto in order to get a pull out from another vehicle.

(I know that me driving in the snow and even talking about a g8 in the ditch might be painful to some. Sorry about that :S)

I see there are a series of lighting holes on the bottom of each of the 2 front frame rails. So I suppose if you really have no choice, you could have them try to attach a pull cable and hook into one of those holes. But of course that would have to be *if the front end is up a fair amount* to gain access to them, to try for a very slow pull out.
If it has to be a rear pull out, it only looks like a hook/cable around either the left or right lower rear wheel strut link (as near to the cross member as possible) is available. I've never been up on a rack to study for the best possibilities.
Either way, it just looks and feels like some type of superficial damage will take place, no matter how you have it done.

Added info--- Just saw a commercial of a car being towed out of a ditch from the rear. In this case, they showed cable chains looped through the rear wheel spokes, as a pull out location. So I guess that way is possible also.

I would install a trailer hitch so you have a solid point to be pulled out from.

Haha nice, I plan on installing a trailer hitch too, but one of the holden ones so its hidden in the diffuser. It would be nice to be able to tow a snowmobile or quad around and have a solid place to hook on if I ever hit the ditch...

My hitch is hidden in the diffuser and has a flush hitch cover on it. I highly recoment it. I have towed jet skies, car trailer, a 4 bike hitch rack and pulled out a stuck car using tow rope. Im looking for a decent camping trailer suitable for my G8 as well. I will take and post pictures later of my hitch. I still haavent figured out how to post pics without a link.

Which hitch kit do you have, or is it custom?
