Default How do I get into the diagnostics mode again?

My check engine light is coming on again and before I take the car to the dealership I would like to go into the diagnostics mode to see what code I get. I am assuming it is the evap leak code- gas cap.

How do I get into the mode again for the codes? And also, is there a link in here that explains the code numbers?

Thanks.

Press down on the metal wheel on the left side of the steering wheel. While holding it down, turn the car on, then you should be in diagnostic mode.

The metal wheel puts you into engineering mode. If you wanna check the engine light codes, you have to hold down the button on the steering wheel that looks like a road, you know the button that cycles the driver information control screen in front of you (odometer, mpg, average speed, etc). Hold that button down while you start the car.

You held down the DUI changing screen button, and you have no codes (no service engine light etc). You want the other one, press and hold Enter when you turn the car on (silver dial/button on the left)

This is getting more and more confusing.
I have a checK engine light with the lightning bolt. I wanted to on my own figure out what the service code is. I guess I'll just press the Onstar button, but I hate to have this go on my record...if that makes any sense.
I don't know if with my ods and having several check engine lights pop up is a good thing or not.
I am 99% sure it is still the gas cap, but wanted to find out for myself.

I think they ought to make the procedure and check engine codes a stickey...IMO.

*edit*
Don't hesitate to ask what some of the other codes mean. OBDII really isn't as complicated as it may seem.
It really does help to narrow things down when troubleshooting.

Some codes need to be reset while while other codes will delete themselves after passing a set number of self-diagnostics with no fault.
