Default Key Programming

Getting a spare key and don't yet have a service manual. Does anyone know the programming sequence (or must you have a dealer tool)? Thanks...Matt

Programming the key:

To program a new section (A):
1. Insert the original, already
programmed key into the ignition
and start the engine.
If the engine does not start, see
your dealer/retailer.
2. Remove the key from the
ignition.

3. Insert and turn the new
section (A) to ON/RUN within
five seconds of removing
the original key.
4. Turn the new section (A) to
LOCK/OFF. Section (A) is
now programmed.

Programming the fob:

To program a new section (B): Remote
1. Turn the ignition to ON/RUN with
the new section (A).
The vehicle must be in
PARK (P).
2. Select Remote Key from the
personalization menu.
3. Select Program.
4. Press Unlock and Lock on the new
section (B), at the same time,
until you hear two beeps.
5. Repeat Step 4 for all other keys,
including keys that require
programming or ones previously
programmed to the vehicle.
Any key not reprogrammed will
be erased.
6. Turn the ignition to LOCK/OFF.

I bought a new transmitter and got a new blade cut by GM and programmed the key myself. The transmitter and blade work fine.

One problem is that the key will turn in the ignition in only one position and not the other even though it's a double sided key. My other two keys work in both positions.

I called the dealership and they said they will have to take a look at it and try it. I programmed the key myself so I don't want to get charged service for a defective key I got.

Suggestions?

It sounds like a defective key to me. I had my replacement key cut by the dealer, but I also programmed it myself and it works both ways in the ignition. If it is defective then shouldn't charge you for that I wouldn't think but you never know with a dealership.
