At the same time?

Starting at a stock horsepower disadvantage I would lean to the GTO's favor - if you start with more hp (400 as opposed to 362)you'll end up with more hp. But balance means musch and I think the G8 is better balanced and regardless of driver will not "sit 'n spin" but will have better off the line and better handling through the curves. An interesting side by side would be an auto vs a manual with the stipulation that timewise the shift at same elapsed time. The auto will be in the next gear with just a flick of the wrist and hardly lift the throttle.

I would have to say the GTO, but the G8 will grab the better 60ft time.

The GTO might be a bit faster but with the G8 you have a better platform for modifications. The L76 has L92 heads, alot better suspension and more body rigidity then the GTO.

Plus, it aint that hard to knock off a few pounds off the G8 , mine weighed in at 3814 lb and thats with the spare tire and tools in the trunk.

I wonder why there's a vast weight difference.. maybe it's because of the extra amenities?

The GTO would be the early favorite. Less weight is a big key. The LS2 & L76 are equal in displacement (6.0 Litres), so what ever speed parts work for the LS2 should work for the L76. That makes power similar. Plus, the G8 will allow for wider wheels & tires in the back for better traction on the drag strip.

FYI, the GTO wasn't a sales flop. Pontiac sold virtually everyone they screwed together. They had somewhere around a 94 - 95% sold to produced rate. That's a rate even some GM trucks don't have. The remaining 5 - 6 % were cars not sold, cars lost in transit, test mules, and publication testers. Taking those out, the sold to produced ratio goes up.

The GTO was a sales flop, if it was not then they would still be making it.

The GTO by the end of 2006 was not produced anymore due to the new generation Commodore being launched, which is the base for the next gen Monaro (GTO). Ever wonder why it was just a 3 year run?

the gto was not a sales flop, if it were they would not have bothered dragging it out and putting the ls2 in it. the gto brought great things here imho... much better build quality and feel than any ws6, ss or cobra could even think about being... solid engineering, sleek and smooth looks without all the sharp edges. it was a great car and by no means a sales flop. only problem i see with the goats is that you cant fit good size meat under the rear w/o rolling, and those half shafts could have been slightly stronger. all in all a great car, thats why so many people are interested in the g8, bc the great build quality, craftsmanship and power available at a decent price (we hope for ours and gms sake)

Jesus...here we go again.

The GTO was meant from the beginning to be a limited 3-4 year run. The car it was based on, the Holden Monaro, ceased production months before GTO production ended. Reason production ended on the VZ platform? To make way for the VE Commodore, which is what the G8 is based on. Currently Holden does not produce a 2 door hardtop RWD coupe. VZ production ceased about 2 months ago.

Funny, there was a contract struck between GM, the UAW, and Holden to build these cars for 3 (Three) model years, at a limit of 18,000 units per annum.

Three model years =

1 - 2004
2 - 2005
3 - 2006

After which time, the future of any domestic GTO would be based on the availability of a future Monaro. Since GM was bringing the GMX282 platform to market for the new Commodore, Lumina, G8, etc, in effect, retiring the GMX281 (which the Commodore, Lumina, Monaro/GTO were on) as of 2006, Holden decided to no longer make a 2 coupe version on the new 282 platform called the Monaro. Hence, no Holden Monaro, no Pontiac GTO!

Please get the facts straight before making absurd comments like "If it were successful, it'd still be built!"
You can't sell what Holden isn't building anymore, right?

2007 Federal guidelines require new airbag restraint systems to be put into cars, and to redesign the GTO for one more model year would not be cost effective. The new guidelines meant that the whole dashboard and everything under it would have to be redesigned.. the GTO is the best performance coupe besides the Cobra(engine only) as far a quality, craftsmenship and reliability..
