Default retractable key fob

Has anyone had a problem with the key part becoming loose? When I bought my car I had Mr. Good Wrench give me a new fob and now 9 months later it is as loose if not worse than when I bought my car. The dear said they won't replace it because it is a key and not a "fob" issue. Not cool

I had my switchblade style key become loose just as you described, and the dealer replaced it as part of the 36k/3yr bumper to bumper warranty. If you are not yet to 3 yrs from original sale date (which is probably coming few and far between nowadays), then they should be replacing this. It shouldn't be a 'wear' item.

If you pop off the Pontiac emblem, there is a small screw under there. For mine, this screw needed to be tightened and problem fixed. The logo wil have to be reaffixed with some thin double sided tape, or glue.

yeah I want to buy another fixed style key.... I have no need to fold the key up every time. Cool little gimmick from 5+ yrs ago, but Im over it. Just give me a key that doesnt come apart and without a rubber cover to fall apart.

Slightly loose when I bought my used GXP but it's held up well, I also have the non flip rubber fob and the valet key. I won't be doing much flipping soon since she'll be put up for about 4-5 months

Awesome thanks guys for the advice. I glad to see that I'm not the only one in this sinking boat. Cheers

Yes, this is a notoriously dodgy part.

I just went to the dealer and had another key cut for me. I think total I paid in the $40 range and it took about a week to order the key and then have them send it out to get cut. I just reused the guts of my fob and the bottom part. I also at the same time ordered a new rubber piece for like $11 bucks. Basically had a new fob after that.

Mine is very loose, been that way for a year now and doesn't seem to be getting worse. Dealer quoted me $300 for the new fob, key, and to cut it. That was absurd so I live with it and hope it will never fail to open.

I just bought my car used last June and my flip key was the same way! $300 for a key is ridiculous! I wonder if we all contacted GM if we could get a discount on keys?

Details on where you got rubber section, please. I would love a brand new fob.

$300 for a new key? Try a different dealer. I paid less than $80 for the flip key and fob at my dealer.

Greg at pace can get the fob for around $30.

I've had mine replaced when it was under warrenty, but its loose now again. It sticks open every once and a while which is a real problem to try and close it. Poorly designed key fob.

Picked up my replacement on eBay; it was less than $40.
I don't remember how I took it apart, but I was able to transfer the key from our original folding fob to the replacement. IIRC, it's a snap-together design.
