When you're as big as I am, you tend to crush anything under 140lbs.

OTOH, for $36,000 you can get a nice big-boy car instead of a turbo econobox that's prone to expensive breakage!

A friend had one, nice car, definitely has it’s strengths, but also has MANY weaknesses. One of those has already been mentioned… SIZE!
He is a big guy, I am a big guy, not “fat” big, just big boned. When we’d head out to lunch, the two of us in the WRX would be rubbing shoulders. If a few of us decided to go out, his car would automatically be out of the running.
Then there is ride quality. Not bad for a short wheelbase, go kart like car. But driving some of our roads in Chicago a drive to lunch in this thing would hurt your jaw afterwards from all the bouncing, rocking, and jerking around the car does. The car was firmly planted mind you, just want got transferred through the suspension to the passenger compartment was on par with a 1983 S-10 I had in terms of refinement.
Then there is power. In order to extract the best performance out of this car, it has to be run around at 5,000 rpm all the time. I had a 1990 Cavalier with a 2.2L 4 cylinder that could out accelerate his WRX simply driving down the road at normal highway speeds and stomping on it! It simply just didn’t have “GRUNT”, or better known as infamous V8 torque!
Yes, I know they can be modified, so can a V8. But from a sheer driving perspective, I’ll GLADLY give up empirical handling performance data and take anything large, comfortable, torquey, effortless in it’s acceleration than a 20 y/o’s wet dream of a go kart.

It's like comparing the finest prime rib to rice (pun intended)! When people point and stare at the G8, it's because they see a first class machine. When they point and stare at the Subaru, they're also laughing!! And the Subaru is how many thousand dollars more?!? Buy a G8 and drop some extra cash into the engine compartment if you need to. But please have some dignity...

A couple of years back a co-worker (one of those annoying "speaker phone guys" that we all hate) had a DSM two door turbo thing. He was raising a family and he and his wife, (they were both israeli) were looking for something bigger that would fit his family better. I told him to get a GTO and she actually liked the idea, and they actually went to look at one, but she (his wife) was thinking of a larger four-door or an SUV, as the GTO trunk was too small.
One day he showed up at work with this gaudy bright-blue foor-door teeny STi with this HUGE skoopy thing on the hood and a massive wing on the back (made the car look like a baby stroller). It looked rediculous! I was thinking to myself how they didn't buy the GTO because it was too small, and now they got this tiny toy car! I was a bit confused...He told me she approved, but..... Turns out she didn't. She screamed at him for three straight days (on speaker phone) in a strange combination of english and Israeli, about how he wasted $36,000 for a useless, ugly teenager car that was smaller than a Civic etc. He ended up keeping it though, but she never *once* rode in the car with him. She was too embarrassed.

Different cars for different people.
If you're looking to continue to recreate your Playstation Gran Turismo gaming experience daily or to re-live your Fast and the Furious dreams, or want to impress the teen and pre-teen girls, then the STi is probably for you.
If you're a little more mature and don't need to live in a video game or movie, then the G8 GT is probably for you.
This is obviously just a generalization, since I'm sure there are STi owners out there who are mature and there are G8 GT owners who are not, but typically, from what I've seen, this seems to be the case.
Just my $0.02.

When I was looking for a new car I wanted a hot rod with 4 doors. It also had to be a daily commuter so mpg was a bit of a concern. I finally narrowed it down to a sti or the g8. I thought it might be cool to take the sti to the track on week ends. I had a co-worker who has one and races all the time. He also commutes about 90 miles each way in it to work, crazy!
After driving both I knew with out a doubt that the g8 was the choice for me. The sti handled better but the trade off in ride quality, interior space, and over all comfort and looks was not worth it. I just didn't think I would enjoy the daily drive, It wasn't me. Besides the g8 will get about the same mpg as the sti.
Having driven both how do they compare? Stock for stock in a straight line they seem about even though I didn't drive them back to back. With the mods I have intake, exhaust, tune I would bet that I could take a stock sti. If the sti is modded with the same upgrades I would get smoked.
My co-worker has done a ton of stuff to his sti and it's fast as hell! He said it puts about 335 hp to the wheels (all 4) but it feels like way more. I have not been in a supercharged g8 but I'm hoping that it could come close (some day I want to race him). I would need some fat rubber in the back to even have a chance. No way I would race him now, he would make look like a fool for trying. With a supercharger I could at least have a small chance of staying close.

Well let me add my $.02 worth here. I just sold my Evo VIII the beginning of this summer and when we sell our house ( ) plan on getting a G8 GT or used GXP by that time. I have a couple friends with STi's as well as a buddy I raced with that owns a GTO, so I know feel I am pretty unbiased on my opinions. I used my car as a daily driver as well as raced it (well over 100 passes).
Anyone who compairs a Evo or STi to a Civic or calls it a Econobox Ricer has either never driven/riden in one or is just thick skulled and ignorant. The interior on the Evo is cheap and uninspiring I will admit but the STi is better, seats are among the best you will ever find. These cars are about performance though. Laugh all you want about the scoops and wings but if you took the time to look at the cars heritage or the performance facts you will realize they have a purpose.
There are very few cars out there period that could hang with a Evo when compairing all aspects, cost, performance, mpg, etc. 0-60 in 2.95, 1/4 mile in 10.6@131mph, 25-30mpg, stock block, tires, and interior, daily driver, and not one problem in 2 years of racing, all for less then $7k. Problem is these cars get a bad rap becuse they are in the Fast and Furious type movies which means you get all these young kids who go out and buy them and think they are badasses. The Subie isn't quite as easy to get the performance out of though, which is why I went with the Evo.
Now I know the G8 will never touch that car in shear fun or performance, but there are other reasons for a switch. The G8 is a much more refined car, interior is better, more room, and the cops won't be so attracted . The Evo/STi really isn't that small but now that I have 2 kids long trips in it did get tough. It was LOUD as well, between the exhaust and the open dump tube everyone in a 5 mile radius knew when I was on the road.
Ok, story over, sorry so long it just really bugs me when people bash a car or group of car owners when they really are blind to the truth.

hands down a boosted g8 will rape a evo or sti in a straight line... no replacement for displacement, especially when boost is involved ... in the twisties the sti and evo will win thanks to awd... lol end of discussion... thread closed

I think that would be true if you could boost a g8 to the same psi levels, but I doubt you can. Also traction has to become a big issue when the boost is up.
Don't get me wrong I'm rooting for the g8 but I don't think it's that cut and dry. Please do prove me wrong though!

Comments like that prove my point . Show me a boosted G8 putting down 130+mph traps or sub 3sec 0-60's. Not saying it can't be done but not without a ton of money and opening up the motor.

comparing 2 very different cars here.
both were made to appeal to 2 very different groups.
im pretty sure a person who is looking in to buying a sti is not going to consider a g8 as a potential car on their list.
same with a person who wants a g8.
i have a pretty built civic with a swapped motor. and it sees quite a bit of track duty. just as fast as a stock g8 actually faster. its almost half the weight of a g8.
but i am looking in to having a 4 door sedan as a next car and something rwd with a v8. the g8 happens to fit what i was looking for.
