Why Won’t My Car Start?
May 05, 2015 - 1:15 PM - by AutoGuide.com

Without a doubt, every owner dreads the moment when their car won’t start. What should you do? Who should you call? Can you fix it yourself? Here’s a list with ten common reasons why cars don’t start up and what you can do about it.

'The first step is to define the no start' said Joe Spadafora, certified instructor at Universal Technical Institute’s Exton, Pennsylvania campus. Spadafora spent the majority of his career in working in the service department of several dealerships and receiving factory training from GM. He’s certified as a Master Technician and certified by Chrysler as a Dodge Viper technician . He also holds certifications from Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota, Lexus and Scion as well, so if there’s something wrong with your car, chances are he’s seen it before.

To diagnose the reason your car isn’t starting, you need to pay attention to happening when you turn the key. 'Does the engine crank but not actually start or, when you turn the key, does literally nothing happen?' he said. 'In a customer’s eyes, the following two options are the same because both create a scenario that results in the vehicle’s failure to run.'

While the two situations might seem similar, they have very different meanings that are important to a mechanic and can signal different problems calling for a variety of solutions.

'It’s important to note that a vehicle is an extremely complicated machine and can exhibit similar symptoms for a variety of reasons,' he said. 'That is why it’s important to first look at the type of ‘no start’ and then at the list of conditions that could be causing it in the first place.'

Owners Spotlight-Meet mlittleton

Feeling honored today for being selected to be in the owners spotlight on G8Board.com. My car really wouldn't be where it is today without this site, the forums and the great folks that are always here to help out and answer questions.

I remember picking up my 2008 MGM G8 GT a little over 2yrs ago. I immediately fell in love with it and knew there was a lot of potential to be had. With a few google searches I ended up on G8Board.com and couldn't wait to get started on modding this beast. After a lot of research it seemed like SOLO was the obvious choice for a nice catback to give her some sound and a Rotofab intake as well. Then a dyno tune to bring it all together. Turns out a had a not-so great experience with a local shop who locked my ECU with a sub-par tune so I continued to research to see what might be better out there. I decided to go with a Pat G tune. Pat's tune was great and after installing a set of Kooks mids with HFC's I was really enjoying the car. Until my first WannaGOFAST event! Then it was obvious I needed MORE power. Before the event I had already decided to get in line for the "almost famous" Rick Crawford intake and throttle body. AFTER the event I knew I needed more and decided to go cam and heads also. Fortunately I was able to schedule time to drive up to Rick's and leave my car with him for a few weeks so he could get everything installed and even though I'd originally planned to keep the Pat G. tune I let Rick talk me into his tune. It just made sense. Who better to tune the car than the man who built it? My first build was fairly subtle with the little lunati, ported heads, intake and TB, changed out the rotofab for a VCM intake and stayed with stock stall. When finished the car was transformed and I was incredibly happy. My first drag event after this build I ran 12.0 on street tires, then eventually I was able to get it down to 11.79. I couldn't have been happier with this setup at the time. Then last year at a road course even at Roebling Road, GA the unthinkable happened. The motor threw a rod on the course and there was smoke and burning oil everywhere. I thought I was done for. The rear bumper, tail lights, spoiler, diffuser etc. were melted and would need to be replaced and repainted and of course a new motor build was in order. I got the car up to Rick's and while we could've built another 6.0 and put her back close to where she was, why not go a little bigger? After some discussion we settled on building a 403 stroker. This build would fit my budget and also give me plenty of power and enjoyment at events while still being a fairly civil driver on the streets. It seemed like years but about 4 months later it was time to go pickup the car from Rick's. Wow! A lady on the streets and a monster at the track, it was like having a whole new car to enjoy again. The car continues to impress and we were just recently able to get the car into a 10.9sec 1/4mi on all motor. Again, I couldn't be happier. It's also a long way from my original 126mph 1/2 mile with full bolt-ons and tune and now running 142mph. Always one of the fastest all motor 4-doors at the events and just a lot of fun.

Now I just get a big smile everytime I fire up the car and enjoy every ride whether it's just down the street or a long road trip to wherever. One of the great things about the G8 community also is that I've been able to meet so many great people. Lots of great guys in North Carolina as well as here in Atlanta Georgia with the Georgia crew. I've had a lot of cars in my years but the G8 has consistently been the most fun and drawn more looks and questions from complete strangers and I always enjoy talking to them about the car. That's pretty much my story and again, I feel honored to be included with with the great folks and cars before me and surely many more to follow after. Many Thanks!!!!

13 Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Car Running Smoothly
Mar 11, 2015 - 2:53 PM - by AutoGuide.com

Modern vehicles are expensive, but one way to avoid headaches and purchasing a new ride is by properly maintaining your existing car or truck. As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Not only can regular maintenance save you money but it can also prevent unexpected mechanical failures. Nobody wants to be stranded on the side of the road in the middle of the night during a thunderstorm. Keeping up with your vehicle’s needs is critical to a happy ownership experience and fortunately there’s quite a bit the average motorist can do to keep their ride running in tip-top shape.
