Check Out the Cars of the Future
Mar 18, 2014 - 4:43 PM - by AutoGuide.com
As close to an auto-industry crystal ball as any single page on the internet can be, we've launched a new Future Cars section dedicated to reporting on the latest in what's coming next.

There's an old belief that concept cars never make it to production. On the contrary, they almost always do; they just often change enough over time, evolving significantly from wild design studies to more practical people movers. The new AutoGuide Future Cars pages will let you track the development of your favorite model or keep tabs on what new an exciting cars are coming down the pipe.

From early rumors to spy photos our Future Cars pages will follow the development of highly-anticipated new vehicles until they reach the market sometimes years from now. We aim to give you the straight facts and plenty of enticing rumors on exactly what we do know about these cars, along with photo galleries of concept cars and, of course, video previews of the near-production vehicles before all the hard specs have been confirmed.

Owner Spotlight-Meet Turbo301
Mar 17, 2014 - 8:55 PM - by The Yeti
The Yeti's Avatar I am very pleased to be here, in the “Owner’s Spotlight”!

To start, a bit about me: I’ve spent my life’s 34 years in London, Ontario (about 2.5 hours South-West of Toronto). I received my Masters in Electrical Engineering from the University of Western Ontario in 2005 and went to work at an aerospace and defense-related company. I am now the project leader for rotary sensor and linear actuator development: I head-up the programs’ design and manufacturing teams and do the electrical and electromagnetic design work for any new RVDTs and resolvers. You’ll find my handiwork on the F-35, 787, A380, and a number of other famous, infamous, or barely-heard-from aircraft . I love aircraft and weapons systems, so I can safely say that I enjoy my job (most days LOL).

In my spare time, when not working on a car, I like to build model kits (mostly cars and planes, not surprisingly) and I also collect a number of things, including Transformers and toy cars (Hot Wheels, Matchbox, etc.). My wife and I have no children yet, but have two cats, both of which are cute but only one of which has any brains!

Now, onto the cars! My current stable of automobiles includes the following:

2009 Pontiac G8 GT: Originally I was considering a V6 G8, as the performance was good and the room in any G8 is fantastic. It seemed like a perfect replacement for my 2004 Crown Victoria. However, after finally driving a GT, I knew I had to have a V8 . Now, at 6’4” tall, I found G8s with sunroofs to be very uncomfortable; I also didn’t relish the thought of GM leather. And so it was that I searched-out a GT with minimal equipment – not an easy task! I finally found my 20,000-odd kilometer, “stripped” beauty at Lauria Hyundai in Port Hope, Ontario: one test drive, the cash was paid, and home she came!

After hanging around G8board.com for a few weeks, I felt the mod bug start to bite. In order to improve fuel economy (no joke, just ask my insurance policy!), I freed up some airflow by installing a Solo Mach Balanced exhaust system, later modified to include high-flow catalytic converters and resonators. A K&N air filter element and AEM short-ram intake tube help the intake side of things, while Livernois Motorsports ECM/TCM tunes make the most of the hardware. I eventually replaced the RS-As with Goodyear Eagle GTs in the factory size. A set of RS-SW BMW-lookalike rims and Arctic Claw winter tires help the G8 handle like a 4X4 in the cold stuff, although thankfully I’m usually able to keep the G8 off of London’s terrible winter streets.

Cosmetically, it’s hard to mess with a good thing, but I have added Holden V8 badges to the fenders in place of the GM “chiclets”, and I’ve painted my brake calipers and brackets in a complimenting silver and black scheme.

As a side note, a month after I bought my G8, my brother liked it so much that he went and found a “Sport Red” GT with the exact same (lack of) equipment! We’re a two-G8 family!

1996 Chevrolet Caprice Classic: Something a bit different from the usual Impala SS, an intact LT1 Caprice sans WX3 is a rare car these days, especially in Canada in the rust belt. My very low-rust, 100% stock (minus side rub strips) has pretty much every bell and whistle offered that year, including heated mirrors – where’re those in the G8?! It’s a real trooper and has let me keep the G8 away from the harsh conditions of the daily commute. In the summer, the Caprice runs its factory aluminum wheels with new Hankook whitewalls (quietest tires ever, I swear!); in the winter, it’s Arctic Claws on a spare set of aluminum wheels that I painted black with silver centre caps to get a 9C1 look.

While the Caprice isn’t as fast as the G8, its 260 hp definitely won’t get left behind in traffic. And with just under 200,000 km on the odometer, I’m hoping for years more of stylish service out of it!

1977 Mercury Cougar XR7: I found my poor Cougar in a hole-in-the-wall, small-town used car lot, and took it home for a very reasonable price (less than the tax on the G8!). Too often, even well-kept, original cars like this get turned into white-trash hot rods, gaudy lowriders or, worst of all, demolition derby fodder; I was honoured to be able to save this one, a car that is very similar to one my uncle had “back in the day”. Its original 134 hp 302 – seemingly untouched in 37 years and 200,000 km – is positively anemic by today’s standards, and that’s just how I plan to keep it! Its all-original interior is in terrific shape and its dark jade vinyl and green/white gingham cloth compliment the light jade/dark jade exterior. You don’t get colours like that anymore! Options are few and definitely reflect the era of inflation and a thrifty Canadian buyer: no A/C, fancy wheels or any power accessories, but the heavy-duty alternator, rear defroster, tinted glass, bumper group, wide bodyside moulding, and deluxe seatbelts. Despite its lack of power, that one-finger steering and monstrous view of hood out the windshield make this my favorite car to drive – yup, even more than the G8 .

2009 Elantra Touring GLS: my wife really wanted a small car, after having lived with a fleet of thirsty, full-size American iron, so I bought her this. I must admit, I’m really impressed with Hyundai’s progress! The Touring’s space and visibility are first-rate, and I am very jealous of the seat heaters and rapid warm-up time in the winter (not to mention the fuel economy LOL)! Her car is fully equipped, including sunroof, as all GLSs were. In the summer it wears its factory 17” wheels, and in the winter it wears gunmetal 16” Core Racing Evo-7s with winter rubber.

Speaking of my wife, well, she’s awesome . She’s not only a brilliant (Masters in Medical Physics) and gorgeous redhead who can cook like a 5-star chef, but she also helps me with my car work even though she hates getting dirty! Her little hands changed four of the Caprice’s spark plugs when I couldn’t reach them, and she’s great at calming me when I inevitably throw something out of frustration LOL. Watching her crawl around under the hoist with grease on her face is just as cute as seeing her all dressed-up for a night on the town. Finding the right woman is the best thing you can do in life, I’m fully convinced of that.

Thanks for taking the time to read about me!
Lee.
