Attempting to put an SS Roto-fab CAI on my G8

Title says it all... I debated heavily on making my own intake for the G8 after having some good luck with my SS Camaro, but I'm going to take the easy way out.

I'm not a big OTR fan personally. I understand the how and why, they're just not for me. Didn't really see any other bolt in G8 intake I saw that just screamed "buy me!"... so...

I ordered an SS rotofab intake this morning for a decent deal ($375 shipped)... I understand it won't drop right in, but I should easily be able to modify it to fit.

I will document the process with pictures, etc once it arrives and I start working on it, hopefully next week.

Okay. I'll bite. Why won't it just drop in?

Quite a bit has changed under the hood between VE (G8) and VF (SS) and even VF II ('16+ SS).

Hood struts for instance.

When I talked to roto-Fab they said the SS would not fit the G8 because of the G8 power steering pump. The SS has electric steering and therefore, no pump. The SS intake takes advantage of this space. It will be interesting to see is the SS box can be modified to fit.

The G8 R_F is designed to seal the open top of the box against the hood liner. I don't have a hood liner anymore and because of this I saw my IAT running higher and not dropping as far or a quickly as when I had a hood liner.

Until i could find another solution, I made a cover from .080" Acrylic sheet, some edge trim, the R-F airbox sealing gasket and some cable ties. It was easy to make and made a huge difference in IAT. It is easy to remove and install with no tools as the R-F gasket is now part of the cover and installs by just lining up the u-channel of the gasket with the top outline of the airbox and pushing it on.

Okay. Fair enough, but then I think I'm still missing something. Why not just buy the Roto-Fab for the G8? You can buy it directly from Roto-Fab for $30 less than what the OP says he paid for the SS unit.

As Ed pointed out, the G8 model depends on being pressed against the hood to seal the box, the SS model has a lid built in, I'm assuming that's why.

I'm a fan of lids on an airbox rather than trusting to seal to the insulation material under the hood. The G8 unit has an open top, which I don't like.

Just personal preference. Plus I like the looks of the SS intake.

Nice job on the lid in the picture above though! That turned out pretty sweet!

That makes sense then. I didn't realize the SS model had a cover. Please don't take it as criticism. I was just confused as to the reason. Good luck! I hope you can make it work.

I like the look of the SS better but after hearing that the G8 power steering pump gets in the way of the SS airbox, I was unsure about what cutting would be needed and or how those new opening(s) would affect the isolation from hot engine bay air.

Looking forward to seeing how the SS fitment to a G8 works out.

I didn't use a roto fab intake BUT I did installed a Spectre intake that is intended for use in the Chev SS and G8. Not sure if that helps as all but it worked perfectly and sounds mean as hell!

If I have to cut a hole for clearance of the PS pump, I will notch around the pump/pulley and fill the hole with new material to clear so it won't just be an open hole.

thanks for the info... I haven't looked at the Spectre SS intake, but that is promising news.

Hood strut on the SS goes right through the area where the Roto-Fab for the G8 sits. And since the Roto-Fab depends on sealing with the hood on the G8 (which is also a different shape than the SS) it won't work for the SS.

But I'm not sure if an SS Roto-Fab will work on the G8, I don't see why it won't. It's a lot like a Volant for the G8 at that point I think.

Roto-Fab says the SS will not work on a G8 because the SS makes use of space that is not free in the G8. The G8 has a power steering pump. The SS does not because it has electric steering. The SS snorkel will not clear the G8 pump.

I ended up going a different route and getting a Yella Terra tube from a board member. I like the look and the simplicity of the install as it just connects to the stock airbox and it took all of about 5 minutes to put in. I'm running it with a high-flow K&N filter in the airbox. Yella Terra is an Australian producer of high performance products, including air induction kits.

Well the intake showed up yesterday... After looking it over and looking at the car, I can see that this project is not for the faint of heart...

It looks like it's going to take some serious chopping to get this thing to work.

IMHO. Seems to me that it would be a lot easier to fab a lid for something like a G8GT Spectre intake vs trying to adapt another intake that has a lid.

Finally had time to play with this again... The deed is done...

It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be after call once I got to looking at it closer. It took me longer to assemble the intake per Roto-Fab's instructions (which are super confusing), than it did to modify the intake to make it fit.

Was it worth it? I don't know... Probably not. It sits just like it would in an SS using the stock upper airbox stud (with a spacer provided from RF), and a bolt in the lower stud hole where the stud was for the stock airbox that was removed per instructions.

It doesn't look as good as I thought it would... Maybe because my car is white? Or I need some filler panels or something. IDK.

I still need to do a couple more things. Need to relocated my HID ballast because the airbox is in the way, and may look at piping some duct of some sort into the bottom of the rotofab to the front of the car. I have to pull the front fascia off anyway at some point to install a GXP trans cooler and lines, so I'll take a look at it then...

I'll post some better pictures in the light here soon.

I think the condition of the other stuff under the hood is contributing to it looking out of place... No engine cover, everything else kind of dirty (not criticizing, mine is dirty too), it just looks out of place being clean black with the clear cover.

A regular G8 rotofab with the radiator cover and a custom fab airbox cover would probably look a lot better I think, especially with the engine cover removed. Also, the stock MAF looks out of place too, due to the much larger diameter intake tubing and less shiny surface finish, not sure what you can do about that unless you're willing to tune it for a card MAF that would fit into a larger diameter MAF tube. There are a couple options for MAF adapter tubes including the shiny spectre one and a black composite one that is too long but can be cut down fairly easily, links to those are in various other threads in here.

Will the roto fab rad cover fit on your setup?
It cleans the engine bay up nice and neat.
Hides the rad.
