Report: Pontiac G8 Has No Future at New GM Says Lutz

Yesterday we urged GM CEO Fritz Henderson to sit down with his new Vice Chairman Bob Lutz to get their stories about the future of the Pontiac G8 straight. Now they have, and the news isn't good.

Bob Lutz posted on GM's corporate Fastlane Blog that the G8 will not live on as the Chevrolet Caprice. In fact, it won't live on at all. "The G8 will not be a Caprice after all. I'd mentioned it, and said we were studying it, giving it a serious look, because a car like the G8 was just too good to waste," wrote Lutz, who continued: "But I have to say that, with my new 'marketing' hat on, upon further review and careful study, we simply cannot make a business case for such a program. Not in today's market, in this economy, and with fuel regulations what they are and will be."

Lutz then expressed his personal disappointment, but said there was just no way to make the car happen and that the company's resources had to be placed elsewhere.

He then tried to reassure rear-wheel drive, performance enthusiasts saying that "in no way does this mean we are backing away from performance, or backing away from rear-wheel drive." He applauded the Holden team in Australia and said that he would like to look to their products to bring another RWD vehicle over in the future, but not now.

Sadly, the G8 will bow out after a short stay in the North American marketplace, an emotional product that fell victim to "further review and careful study."

How about an apology for getting our hopes up Bob?

I mean do they see the buzz that is surrounding this car?! Every magazine gives this car rave reviews even the ones that normally would bash a GM product into oblivion. A car that wins the hearts of those who write about it and drive it and GM axes it. Good Ol' GM doing what it does best.

Poor Bob Lutz. He's powerless to make good things happen. They brought him back just to try to make us car enthusiasts think that just maybe everything will be all right at GM. He is the perfume on a pig.

< [Lutz] tried to reassure rear-wheel drive, performance enthusiasts saying that "in no way does this mean we are backing away from performance, or backing away from rear-wheel drive." >

.....as long as you are a rich politician who can afford a CTS-V or a Corvette. G8, Solstice/Sky and affordable RWD performance RIP.

<He applauded the Holden team in Australia and said that he would like to look to their products to bring another RWD vehicle over in the future, but not now.> ....So senior GM management can screw you over again.

Looks like Lutz the former Marine got fragged in the back by senior GM management and the Government (yes I know this is redundant).

Laughed out loud at the statement that they could not make a business case for it. Cmon, it's just a front end change. Peanuts. For a car who sales went up every month and is selling better than ever as the word gets out.

Government fools killing off one of the few GM cars that people are enthusiastically buying. Guess we have to make room for more Cobalt production.

GM, pay off that govt loan ASAP and get those ignorant fools off your board.

I wonder what credibility GM or Lutz thinks that he still has with the car enthusiasts. Obviously, he's just a figure head with little power, so why bother bringing him back from the brink of retirement?

It is what it is.

I'm just glad I got to buy a GT. I know there are mixed feeling about this, but I believe the car is going to become a sought after vehicle after a number of years. I believe the legend of the G8 8 cylinder began with today's announcement....what an oddity it was, a Australian built performance sedan with real American muscle under the hood as well as an awesome chassis and brakes. Quickly made a name for itself within the motor press for its superb balance and brute power...then, all of a sudden, its gone forever....with the historic demise of Pontiac.

I think I'm keeping mine for a long time

We're on the same page brother! The very hint that this car would survive created more buzz than the crappy volt has since it's inception. Um I should say "real world" buzz you know from people that would actually buy the car. Way to go GM you killed my Avalanche, you killed my Pontiac, you danced on my hopes and dreams so now I'm leaving you. Barring a miracle THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER GM VEHICLE IN MY GARAGE!
