There's no denying that the 2012 BMW M5 probably deserves a higher spot on our Frankfurt Auto Show Top 10 list, but here it is anyway. Maybe it's that we all knew several months ago that it would have a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 and make 562-hp that made its "official" reveal less captivating than it otherwise could have been. Still, don't let the 10th place spot make you believe we think any less of what is likely to be crowned as the world's highest performance sedan. After all, the M5 delivers the sort of performance you only expect to see in a concept car. But this is one very real machine.
At north of $90K and 562hp / 7 speed tranny (3700lbs) it could only manage 4.4 sec 0-60.
I guest my G8 GT at $27K / 6 speed tranny (4000lbs) with $2500 in mod's and 440hp / 470ftlb (4.2 sec 0-60) is a steal - American Muscle vs. German Engineering.
Have money left over for the supercharger - next lessen - American Muscle vs. European Supercars.
American Muscle wins each time.
I dont know, those numbers are probably just estimates and not really pushing it to the limit for the m5. Granted 4.4 sec for a 90k+ sports sedan is nothing to write home about, but I bet if this engine is anything as close to tune friendly as the N54s were, they will pick up a ton of torque and HP with a simple tune. I am not a big BMW fan myself, i think the price they ask for their cars is just a little over-rated, I have ridden in a 3 series / 5 series/ 6 series and for the what they paid I wasnt quite impressed with what they got.
But needless to say, I do see where you are coming from with the whole dollar for performance aspect. But then the same can be said about a 2200lb civic bought for 3k and modded with 20k worth of stuff running 11 secs on the quater, comparing to the civic the G8 GT looks like a terrible buy in terms of performance for the dollar. In the end people who buy an m5 are not going to be thinking for a second about a G8 or probably wouldve never have heard of a G8 in most cases. To each his own.
On a side note a kia made 3rd place but the m5 is at 10th..hmmm..something is odd about this list
