So why did you end up with a V6?

And not a V8?

Frankly, despite the conundrum in the aftermarket world, I am glad that GM offered the G8 with a V6 option as Holden typically does. I've been seeing V6 owners get bagged on by V8 owners for not 'stepping up'.

So why did you get a V6?

---------------

Me: Personally I wanted the V8 but they are very rare to find in my area and the ones that do show up are priced fairly high and end up selling within hours of being posted online. In the 2 years I have looked for GTs, I have only seen 2 pop up in the classifieds.

So I settled for the 'lesser' model. It can still handle and play around the bends despite wheezing in a straight line. Frankly, going straight is only 25% of the fun of driving. Bring me some twisties!

Would I trade my car in for a GT? Probably. But I am realistic and doubt a GT will pop up when I am financially ready.

---------------

So how about you guys?

At the time I had my mind on purchasing an old Chevelle like the one in the signature from my uncle, but he won't sell it to me. Sure, I could find another, but it wouldn't quite be the same as my deceased grandmother (his mother) used to drive the vehicle. Kinda wanted to keep her in the family. Now to answer your question... the G8 was originally intended as a daily driver/ grocery getter and the Chevelle, upon being heavily modified,... scrotums (not to) but through the wall.

I drive 65miles a day in bumper to bumper traffic and get precious few opportunities for spirited driving. I was looking to replace my 2000 Maxima DD with something that performed a little better. Buying my base G8 I went from FWD to RWD, dropped only 2MPG, picked up some HP, much improved handling and it was priced right. I really never considered the V8 and didn't know about DOD at the time. I love this car and its community of owners, both V8 and V6. Passionate people I have learned a lot from.

V6 vs V8

I started out in the v6 and traded for a v8. I initially bought the v6 because people on this board said they were averaging 15mpg and gas was $4.25. Never thought about driving style affects. So then pontiac was killed and I test drove some GTs and found out the hwy the mileage is pretty much the same. I also like the feel of the sport steering wheel and extra power. GT just felt better also the 09 seems to have better fit and finish.

After having the GT for 2.5 years, I can say I don't regret trading one bit. My tune up'd my mpgs. They only time the mpgs drop is when I'm sitting in traffic doing a lot of stop and go. So I average 25mpg back and forth to work on the GT. Probably would see 26-27mpg on the V6. I average 27mpg on my 97 GP.

That being said, if the V6 had the 305hp Direct Injection and 6 speed, I would have kept it, shot my GP when the tranny died and bought a very used GT for fun.

It was all about the money for me. I couldnt do a GT at the time of purchase. I wanted a G8, Pontiac got killed, inventory was on a rapid decline and I had to buy what I could afford. If I didnt have negitive equity I would have gotten a GT for sure. I bought mine for $20,240 brand new in July of 2009 when they were practically giving them away.

I find that I love the car just not enough power. Looking at Charger R/Ts right now due to the fact I can only muster up 15.3's with allot of effort. Want to be in 13 land.

Beware the speed monster! You'll be happy with 13's until you run one. Then it'll be 12's, 11's, 10's, ...

At my time of purchase and location, March 2011 in southern Ontario, GTs were quite rare (and GXPs non-existant). And they wated 30K CAD for the used GTs which is BS. V6 made infinitely more sense for a daily driver plus the lower insurance rates. P.S. I had a G5 before so this was a massive upgrade for me anyways!

Aint that the truth. I know that I will be thirsty for more once I see that timeslip...assuming I get there. Should get there in theory.

Basically 2 reasons:

1) I drive it as a DD in Wisconsin - even in the snow. I test drove a V8 first in the snow in January and was afraid I'd kill myself. The V6 was a little easier to keep under control in the winter.

2) I like the V-6 wheels better

Same reason as DrewZ. GTs are hard to find in London especially one in liquid red. Fuel economy and insurance were considerations as well. The V6 has enough power for a DD and I couldn't be happier with it!

I love my V16! Oh wait, you said V6. I was thinking of our 2 GTs! Seriously, we bought both of ours used, mine with 42k miles, hers with less than 4k. At that time there were plenty of GTs around. Now I notice less and less GTs on lots. A couple of weeks ago we drove past a dealer who had 3 G8s. My wife went back later and told me all 3 were V6s.

Whenever I silence a noise my car is making, another one, that was masked by the first becomes apparent. The only universal repair is to dramatically increase the volume of the radio, purchasing a good aftermarket subwoofer and amp if your car also suffers from as yet undiagnosed clunks or vibrations.

Here's why I got a GT.

The V6's were about the same price. I bought my GT with 13,500 miles for about $20K and the V6's with 7,000 miles were like $22,000. This was back in Dec 08.

$35k! That's insane. I paid less for my GXP brand new in 2009. I can't believe how much they mark stuff up in Canada.

I thought I read that Australians pay a high premium on Holdens. Much higher.
