Question about front struts

My new H&R coilovers will be arriving in a few days, I thought I had read that the two large bolts (I think they are 19-22mm) holding the strut assembly are TTY (torque to yield). Hoping they arenít but if they are I will probably replace them 😊

Anyone know for sure?

According to the manual the torque is 63 ft-lbs -> 74 ft-lbs -> then 90 degrees, so they are most likely TTY. Reusing them isn't too big of a deal though, if it really was then they'd need to be replaced everytime the shop adjusted your camber with an alignment.

Many of us have replaced struts (years ago) and re-used the bolts without any issues.

I think it's the nuts that are supposed to be replaced. It's the same with some of them in back.

I reused all of mine. No issues.

Its the bolt which is in tension that is the weak point in any bolted joint. Torque to yield is suppose to bring the bolt to the max load it can take without permanently stretching.

I understand that, however, there are numerous places in the GM shop manual that say to "discard the nut(s)" and install new ones when working on the suspension, while retaining the original bolt.

For this specific example, it says: "Remove and discard the strut assembly to steering knuckle retaining bolts , nuts, and washers."

So, I was wrong on this one, but nevertheless reused all of them and had no issues.

There is nothing in a nut that is more structurally limiting than in the bolt (the bolt will always break first, be it the shaft or threads). So the shop manual says to dump some nuts but not the bolts is interesting. If there was a locking feature on the nuts then I can see where you don't want to re-use it.
