I have a 2009 GT and I got a alternator warning light that then went to service charging system and battery saving mode. The car then completely failed and stopped driving. It started with a jump then died within 5 minutes with cables taken off. Is this just a battery issue or does the alternator need to be changed ?

It's your alternator.

The battery is only used to get your car started. After it's started, the alternator is what keeps it running.

It's not a tough job. Not as easy as my '97 Siverado (2 bolts and a wiring harness), but not terrible.

I should add that if you keep trying to jump it and run it, you're only going to kill your battery and you'll have to replace that too.

If the car can't get enough juice to run from the alternator, it will suck it from the battery until it's exhausted, then everything goes dead.

From what it sounds like, you'll need to put the battery on a trickle charger in addition to replacing the alternator.
