Hey folks,

I have an 09 V6, I was taking a look under the hood to see what kind of a job the spark plugs are...seems I own yet again another car that requires I remove other components just to change the plugs, but oh well...

I have the one-piece engine cover, and when it's removed there's another bracket that the top cover clips onto. That second bracket comes off and after that, there's a blanket/pad that hooks into the bracket and seems to run part of the way down the backside of the engine. It is blocking my access to the rearmost intake manifold bolt.

Basically all I want to know is, do I need this pad? I've seen some pictures of the V6's with the 2-piece covers and I don't see any sign of the pad. Unless it's a heat shield or sound deadener, I don't see any purpose for it.

Anyone know if I need this or not?

I'm pretty sure you don't need it. I took mine off as well. That cover only holds in a lot of heat I've been told. So better to just go without it. I haven't had a single problem thus far :D Hope that helps a lil bit!

It helps indeed. I've never been a big fan of engine coverings in the first place, after the better part of 10 years working under hoods I've come to the conclusion that the only thing they do is get in the way.

Considering that blanket doesn't even have a reflective layer I don't see how it could do much more than what you said, hold in heat.

I assume when you removed it, it was a simple matter of pulling it out? (The pad)

Wondering if the pad is there to deflect water from getting into the bolt holes that hold the air manafold on.

Thanks for that. I think I'll remove it all and see what if anything happens, which I doubt will be much of anything. I could see it helping to deaden some noise but other than that, I doubt it serves much purpose.

Just did. It looks better that much is for sure. There was some strange yellow powder on the back side of the pad, not at all sure what that was but it was far down the backside of the engine so good luck trying to see it.

Would have taken a picture but that plastic cover was hiding a world of dirty sins. Engine needs a bath, won't be taking pics of it until that's done. Lol

:iagree: . I removed it along time ago in order to go with the two-piece engine cover design and all is well. Now, I've boxed up the two-piece design (coming soon to the for sale section) and am going with nada.
