hey guys, wanna start making my g8 into a savage but i have some questions. what is the difference between x-pipes and a cat back exhaust?

A catback exhaust replaces everything in the exhaust system past the cats. An X-pipe is the merge of two pipe in an X configuration. Ever heard of google?

Xpipes can be cut in to fit in your factory exhaust. Paired with a set of axle back mufflers it can provide good sound for less $$ than a catback system ( need to go to muffler or performance shop for this). The catback is a complete bolt on replacement of your factory exhaust (from the cats back...) including mid section and axle back mufflers normally (can be bolted in place in your driveway with ramps or jack w/ stands). Search for solo performance exhaust systems. They have what you need buddy. Good luck

I believe X pipes are mainly for sound... here's an example.

Granted, the one with the X pipe is in what looks to be a car wash so the acoustics are different but you get the idea.

Just as an FYI, out catback kits for the G8 all have an X pipe. The X pipe is actually built into our muffler. The muffler is 4 chambers of tight packing surrounding a true X pipe. The muffler is designed by us, and gives you all the flow characteristics of an X pipe, while keeping unwanted noise out of the cabin. The J pipes in the rear also allow us to only use one mid muffler, instead of two larger ones in the rear. It looks a lot cleaner from the back, and also reduces weight.
