If you're getting the windshield replaced, it'd probably be a good time to get the headliner fixed since it'll come out from the front of the vehicle since the windshield would be off.

Nah. In a way i wish I did. That would make life easier. I can't see how they get it out without removing the windshield. I'd think going through a door would bend the cardboard or whatever they use for headliners.

Windshield replacement is "free" in my state provided it's damaged (this can be subjective from past experience) and one has comprehensive coverage.

I'm worried about that as well. Also when it's fully covered and being put back into the vehicle. I've read that it comes out and goes in through the rear passenger door.

Hmmm. Well i can maybe wait until I have a crack in the windshield and try to do the headliner the same day. Although for what i want to do, I don't think he will want to wait. Also i have no idea how to drop the headliner itself. So I'd have to learn how to do that in the meantime.

Not soo bad took mine out of the rear passenger door with the front seat fully reclined. The hardest part was putting it back in. The "oh $h!+" handles in the rear are such a pain to screw back in.

How long did it take you to do the whole process?

I took mine off this week to take to the upholstery shop. It took me about an hour to get it off. I did not take out the right front seat like the directions say. Just folded both seats all the way back.

Here's what I did:

1) remove both sunvisors
2) pull down door weatherstrips
3) remove A pillar trim
4) remove B pillar trim. you will have to remove the bottom section first then there are two screws on the top section
5) remove C pillar trim. there is a screw behind the cap on each one
6) remove dash trim by the windshield that covers the tweeter. you will need to unplug the wire harness that runs to the headliner
7) remove front overhead console. open the sunglasses holder and there is one screw to unscrew. then pull down from the front
8) remove rear light
9) remove the two rear "oh *****" handles
10) pull headliner out right rear door.

When pulling the headliner out it did make a half inch tear in the cardboard (or whatever material it is) at the front center from bending it out but I don't feel its going to be an issue. I really didn't feel like dealing with pulling the seat.

I did my caprice with the entire interior out and through a door that is a bit bigger and also cracked the backing where you mention. It's not a big deal as there are so many things holding up the headliner in place up front that the material just covers up and hides any crack. think it's a common occurrence.

If you could could you post a picture of the front passenger side grab handle mounting bracket/holes? I am having a hard time imagining how it mounts up since mine did not come with it. G8's got those right? in the front seat?

Hope that shop is careful and meticulous because I can see them F-ing-up a lot of things. I would remove the headliner and let them just apply the material then install it yourself. I ended up reupholstering the rear speak deck cover: glad I was able to. With interior trim if they mess up you wouldn't know until you take it off for other reasons years later. Like any auto repair shop it's a crap shoot.
By the way if you have a sunroof they would need to be extra caution when installing it back in because they could pinch the drain tubes on the sunroof and cause leaks into the car.
Good Luck.

^^^ i bet there is alot that could go wrong. I can see myself making half of the possible mistakes : ) hey. If they do they better pay to have it fixed.

I'm actually looking at possibly doing an l.e.d. project with the headliner. But as I look at my roof. I am starting to feel that our roofs sit too low for what I was thinking. So I might bail on the whole idea. We'll see! : )

The G8 only has the handles in the back seat. There isn't one in the passenger front.

Just an FYI for anyone needing to repair your headliner.

I know i'm reviving an old thread but i recently repaired my headliner and posted a step by step video on youtube on how to do it. Watch it if your interested in doing it yourself. Total cost for my own repair was around $80.00

if the link doesn't work, then search pontiac g8 headliner removal - complete step by step in youtube

Please don't do the star light headliner mod.
