How to get scratched aftermarket rims repaired?

1690 Views 10 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  PONY MAN
Not long after having my aftermarket 20's, I pulled a total rookie move and wasn't paying attention in a drive-in car wash and scratched up two of my rims realllly bad on the guide rails.
I am fully aware of how big of an idiot I was and this thread really isn't about that, my main question is: can scratches on aftermarket wheels (machine black finish, the ones in my profile picture) be repaired? What type of place might be able to make them look better, like an auto body shop?

Or will I have to bite the big one and just buy replacement rims entirely

I would think an auto body shop would know how to fix it. But I think once they have repaired the damaged area they would have to paint over it and the rest of the rim. I'm not 100% sure though.
I used Alloy Wheel Repair Specialists in Detroit to do my stock 19" wheel as well as one on the wifes Honda CRV. Both had been curbed pretty good. The CRV was done while i waited and the G8 wheel took a couple days because i had it completely re-machined/re-finished (i think he said just repairing the rash might not look 100% on this type of wheel)
The Honda wheel is perfect, I couldn't find the curbed spot if i tried....and I have.
The G8 wheel is almost perfect, the finish is just so slightly off from the other 3....but something probably only I notice....and still looks 1000 times better than the curbed wheel.
I think i paid around $125 for the CRV repair and $175 for the G8 complete refinishing.
There are independent guys who do rum repair in my area. The gm dealers body shop I worked at would just call him in to fix rims.

Turned out to be a friend who worked for the guy they went too. He said the same about the 19 inch sport rim I have not looking exactly like the others. Like what firstdue was saying.

Any way to put up some good quality picks of the damage. ? Might help us help you .

Ideally you want to use a business that specializes in repairing and refinishing wheels especially if you have some superficial gouges out of sections of the machine faces and the rim edge. Just check the quality of their work.

As 2 wheels are now damaged I would tend to repair what scuffing there is and repaint all of the machine faces on all 4 wheels in the same black finish as the rest of the wheel.

If you scratch them again it is very easy to touch up and fix a black painted wheel compared with a machined face. IMHO that wheel design on your car in all black finish will improve the look significantly. Anyhow good luck with it.
There are many companies that specialize in wheel repair (and are damn good at it). I would recommend talking to the car wash and see if they have a company. Also dealers and tire shops most likely have a place they use. Most of the guys who don't the wheel repair have a mobile set up and a lot of them can do it on the vehicle in just a few hours. Typically it hardens quick and can be power washed in hours.

Typically black is the hardest match but if it isn't matte/flat it won't be as bad. Depending on where exactly the damage lies and how bad it is I would imagine paying anywhere from $100-$200 a wheel

Good luck!

Once my wheels are repaired, my vehicle will never see any kind of automatic car wash again ;)

Yeah I looked over their website, seems like a similar type of place to the one I found. I'm sure a place like that could get my rims looking happy once again.

Scratches on aftermarket wheels with a machine black finish can often be repaired. You can consider seeking assistance from an auto body shop or a specialized wheel repair shop that offers rim refinishing services. They have the expertise and equipment to restore the appearance of your rims. It's worth consulting with them to assess the extent of the damage and discuss potential repair options. Replacement rims may be necessary only if the damage is severe or if you prefer a brand new set.
