Driving to work today heard a chime and up popped the dreaded check engine light. My son has a generic scanner on his phone and scanned up the P0496 code.
After a little research on this board I find out the most likely culprit is a faulty EVAP Purge Solenoid, so we're off to the dealership tomorrow morning to get this confirmed and swapped out.

Look out! GM wants $800 US to do the valve by the rear wheels.

Although it's part of the pollution control system, its not covered. Most of the cost is labor.

Yikes!!! I got this info from an older thread that said this Solenoid is on the right side of a V6 engine. Hope it's the lesser of the two evils.

Thanx Jim, hopefully we can get a meet down Niagara way before the snow flies again, if not Lakeview.

Hmm. Wasn't planning on it but we can get a thread together and see about doing Niagara. See what kinda response we get. See if its worth it. Sundays and fridays are best for me. Off of work.

P.s. just thinking that people are starting to put thier cars away for the winter , but we'll see

Sorry about that. The nervous twitched in my face when I read "EVAP Purge Solenoid" got the better of me, especially just reading about another G8 having to repeat the rear valve replacement.

What PONY MAN put up there sums up everything.
Took longer to drive to/from the dealership than it did to fix and my son worked at the dealer so I got his discount.

Replaced the EVAP Purge Solenoid a few weeks ago and the P0496 code is gone but now I have P0455 large evap emissions leak pending after about 250 miles. Gas cap and seal looks good.

The fuel cap still could be the source of the fault code (even thou it looks OK). I've never had a problem, so I'm not sure what a cap might look, and or feel like if it were going south on you. What's flunking is that the car (after starting), will tell the purge valve to open an the vent valve (at the canister) to close. That will allow engine vacuum to enter the tank. The ECM monitors the fuel tank pressure sensor voltage to verify that the system is/was able to reach a predetermined level of vacuum within a set amount of time. Since you do not show any codes that would say that any of the components failed to move, or monitor the vacuum level, you have to believe that all that action was OK. But a purge valve could move (from closed to open) as requested, but still have an internal problem an prevent any or a limited amount of vacuum to reach the tank. Or the same thing could have happened to the canister vent valve (moving from open to close) an allow that vacuum to be dumped overboard (instead of trapping it in the tank). If the purge line (from the engine, back to the tank was plugged in any way) you would be in trouble. Maybe you could eliminate a plugged line by removing the gas cap an the line going back towards the tank (from the purge valve), an make sure that low pressure air can easily get thru it. Or maybe you had a touch of bad luck an your fairly new purge valve decided to call it a day internally. Course I could be putting to much into this. If so, I apologize.

I'll have to check on the lettering and it is tethered, but I unscrewed and put it back on just for the hell of it yesterday. Drove it around today and the code is no longer pending although the evap monitor hasn't completed. Will check every few days until all monitors are completed.

Hope so too. But back when, I vaguely recall it was the 0455 and the 0496 codes that made a bunch of us change the valve and the canister. The dealer charged me over $800 to drop the rear cradle and replace them as I failed the NYS inspection and there wasn’t a lot of info yet from the forums on how to tackle this mess myself. (Hence my reaction in my earlier post)

Wasn’t there a recall on gas caps? I see Pony’s post pointing to the new and old gas caps.
