Possible VERY cheap Bluetooth option ($25)

So I was poking around on Monoprice's website tonight and came across a new product they have on their site that is just a simple Bluetooth receiver. I don't really want to spend the $$ and effort to buy a new Onstar module just to get Bluetooth.

I ordered a Bluetooth receiver from Monoprice for $20-ish bucks based on a comment on the review tab where another person figured out that the USB port on the bottom, meant to be used to charge anything USB plugged into it, is also able to be used to power the device via USB instead of 110v A/C power.

My plan is to use the Rear Aux input to connect the Bluetooth receiver to the stereo and using a usb power adapter and a USB cable with two male ends to power the unit. I should be able to hide the receiver behind the dash and have Bluetooth audio streaming from my iPhone + bluetooth phone abilities. Grant it, it won't be as easy as answering a phone call with a button on the steering wheel, but it's pretty dang good (if it works) for $20-25 bucks. You can get a male-male usb cable from Monoprice, too. I think it was about $1.50.

I'll post once I get everything next week and install it. I don't see any reason why this won't work fairly well!

This is what I use. Solar power, no power cords. I have no complaints.

Why can't you just plug the phone into the front aux input??

I have my phone on a cig lighter mount placed just to the right of the center stack ahead of the shifter. I used a 6" aux cord, wrap it once around the mount and plug it into the phone.

Question: what would you normally do w/ your phone when you get in your car? Leave it in your pocket? No, then you can't answer it. Let it sit on the seat so it slides around? No, you'd want it somewhere secure so why not in a cradle mount.

If its in a cradle mount it may as well have an aux cord you already have some "clutter" there to begin w/ - plus many mounts can also charge the phone.

Question: what would you normally have plugged into the front aux anyway?? Well, probably something that plays mp3's and internet radio - well that's exactly what my phone does. And the mount makes it handy to tap the buttons.

Question: when a call comes in whether you're on a hands free headset, bluetooth, speaker phone, or just holding it in your hand - what's the ONE thing you still have to do? PRESS A BUTTON. When I get a phone call in on my setup all I do is switch to aux on the radio (if I'm not already on it) and then tap my cell phone's touch screen.

I have every convenience of bluetooth capability, plus this is a hard-line connection, crystal clear, never any static, and tons of volume.

For a $5 cord and whatever mount you should probably already buy to begin w/

I don't get the obsession w/ aftermarket (or stock) bluetooth when you can set it up like this. I've had cars w/ bluetooth before...and, well, w/ this setup correct me if I'm wrong but what am I missing?

While I understand the cost of factory bt is high, please accept my experience that it is the BEST and most important mod I have done so far. If you watch ebay you can pick up a bt module for under $200 plus the cost of programming. While it sounds expensive, you will not regret spending the money on for the convince factory bt offers.

If the vehicle supported streaming bluetooth audio, yes, the phone would stay in my pocket. That's how it is in my truck and on my bike, and it's very convenient. It would be particularly convenient if I could use the steering wheel controls on the G8 to control the music.

Ideally, nothing.

I push the button on the steering wheel, not on the phone itself. The phone can stay in my pocket just fine.

You're missing the cleanliness of a lack of wiring and "clutter", as you put it, and the convenience of being able to use the steering wheel controls to control music/telephone, rather than having to reach other places.

As far as the 3.5mm jack being better audio quality, I've no issues with the bluetooth in my truck. The bluetooth on the bike has some static, but I bet relocating the noise filter will get rid of that, as soon as I get off my lazy butt and do it.

A bluetooth adapter that doesn't utilize the steering wheel controls doesn't particularly interest me at the moment, as I agree, if I have to have the phone out of my pocket, it may as well be hard wired...but if the headunit/steering wheel could control it, then you'd have my attention :)

Good luck gettting BT modual for $200. There is one selling and its $350
yeah factory placed and tuned microphone, that works > $200. easily.

then the whole it mutes the radio on its one when a call comes in etc etc.

Worth about 300 or so to me.

On the Why can't you use the cord thing. Well with my DX I tried it. It does work, but you can't turn on speaker phone, then the phone speaker comes back on. cause the phone treats that plug as a plugged in HEADSET.

but, it does work, and because the DX has 4 microphones it works pretty well. but not nearly as well as BT.
I understand what you're saying, but I like a clean look. Right now I use the front aux input and it's plugged into my SkyDock so it's charging my iphone and whatnot. I don't want to use just a cable because then you have to deal with a cable always hanging out the front of your stereo. I agree that factory bluetooth is THE best option, however, I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars for it. It's not THAT great....

I like being able to hold my phone in my lap so I can do other things when I stop at a stop light, such as check the weather, look at FB, etc. When it's in the dock it is very difficult without interrupting the music that is playing. If I have Bluetooth the phone can be wherever it wants in my car, doing what I want with it, and music still streams. I'll probably keep my Skydock in the car if I want the best possible sound quality, but like another poster said, the BT streaming quality isn't as bad as it was on version 1 of Bluetooth. The newer bluetooth modules are much better in that area.

I guess what I'm saying is: if you're using your phone to check email @ stoplights, play music, answer calls, and its a touch screen, well, you're better off having it mounted somewhere IMO - just like a cop or other service oriented on the go job would require, such as my sales type job.

I guess I just got to take a pic of how I have my phone and nav setup - both hardwired, both inexpensive, then maybe you'll see why I'm scratching my head.

W/ an aftermarket bluetooth it still aint gonna let you control the mp3 or pandora through the steering wheel??

I press ONE button on the phone, that's it, then I just talk and adjust the volume as needed through the steering wheel.
The dock that I used is plugged into the power point below the HVAC controls. It's too far away to comfortably use while I'm sitting at a stop light. I just like keeping my phone in my lap. On long trips I put it in the dock, but around town I don't like it there.

Having bluetooth streaming on the rear aux input and the wired dock on the front aux input is a good mix between the two without spending TONS of money.

To each their own I guess...
