Hey guys, just got my Camaro SS Wheels coated in PVD Black Chrome and was wondering if anyone on the forums had the same coating.

I have been told to clean them with only water and soap, which is not an issue. However, to clean the tires, it's an issue as regular soap does not complete dislodge the crap.

I have hard of Eagle PVD Cleaner but unfortunately, it is not available in Canada (of course).

Has anyone with a PVD wheel set used a different product without issue? There is Sonax and Meguiar's All wheels cleaner but just wanted to make sure those product did not deteriorate the wheel before giving them a try.

Thanks for your help.

Be careful with PVD coatings as they do not hold up well if any wheel cleaner touches them. Only soap and water to clean them. I, being in the wheel industry, have tested PVD coatings in trying to replace chrome, however, we cannot get PVD coatings to pass our adhesion tests. Advanced Plating can do Black Chrome, but that can be hit or miss on quality as well. I wish we did black chrome, but we don't.

You won't be sorry you did it. I really like the look of mine with the Camaro 20s. Be careful just use soap and water to clean.

I bought my wheels from Detroit Wheel & Tire and they do a black chrome powdercoat. The finish is pretty amazing IMO. It changes in different light conditions. It goes from a very dark black to a glistening almost blue color (in some light). If you're thinking about doing it, I'd say go for it. The finish is really awesome in person and the pictures below don't really do it justice. It's hard to capture on film what the finish actually looks like and how the color changes in different light.

I have PVD black chrome wheels on my wife's Trailblazer SS. Simple Green works perfect. Wont stain or hurt the coating in any way. I also use Maguire's Ultimate Quick Wax with a micro fiber cloth to maintain their finish between car washes.

Key is to treat them like you would a paint finish on your car.

Thanks for the useful information. Mixed replies from users but better go the safe route and use extra elbow grease to clean the tires...Now I have to figure out if tire dressing is safe too haha

Seems like a good option as well. It's non toxic after all, I may give it a try.

Trust me, it will not hurt the pvd finish. Also, to remove the dirt and grime off the tires, just dry rub them with a dirty micro fiber that's too dirty to be useful on paint. The dirt and grime rub right off. No need for chemicals.

I have PVD wheels on my C5, you can use any "all wheel cleaner" that does not have acids in it. They scratch fairly easily so keep that in mind, and I'm talking like micro scratches which eventually look bad "hazy". You can take them out with a polishing compound every so often on the outer clear coat. For me, next time I'll just ceramic coat some polished wheels and be done with it...
