Frederick "Fritz" Henderson has resigned as General Motors chief executive officer.

Henderson (left, in the photo above) was appointed CEO on March 29, replacing Rick Waggoner who shown the door by the Obama administration. Over the last eight months, Henderson worked at reorganizing the company. GM announced that Chairman Ed Whitacre Jr. (right, in the photo) will take over as interim CEO until a permanent replacement is found.

"Fritz has done a remarkable job in leading the company through an unprecedented period of challenge and change," said Whitacre. "While momentum has been building over the past several months, all involved agree that changes needed to be made. To this end, I have taken over the role of Chairman and CEO while an international search for a new president and CEO begins immediately. With these new duties, I will begin working in the Renaissance Center headquarters on a daily basis. The leadership team – many who are with me today – are united and committed to the task at hand."

During Henderson's tenure, GM filed for Chapter 11 protection and, 40 days later, emerged from protection with help from the government. On Nov. 16, Henderson announced GM would begin paying back the government's $6.7 billion loan.

As part of the company's recovery efforts, GM scaled back to four key brands: Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC. Pontiac is shutting down and GM found a Chinese buyer for Hummer. GM also came close to finding new owners for Saturn and Saab. A deal with Roger Penske for Saturn fell apart, while a deal for Saab with Koenigsegg also fell through. GM also announced today it has "has received expressions of interest in Saab" and will evaluate potential bids before the end of December.

Very surprising to me. Many over on GMI were glad and hoped that the door hit him the arse on the way out. The direction seemed solid (other than the demise of our beloved brand). Anyone have insight into this?

All I know is that GM needs a CEO that will focus more on their advertising department. It is absolutely terrible. Not once did I see a intriguing G8 GT commercial. Now, in one night I saw eight commercials showing the new Taurus SHO smoking and Audi A6. A mediocre car, at best, being shown to the general public as being a *****in supercar. GM needs to do this! The G8 didn't sell because nobody knew what the ***** it is! I'm so sick of people asking me if is a 4 banger or a 6 that i'm starting to avoid shopping! lol

Wasn't the total lack of marketing for the G8 pre-Fritz though?
Absolutely, and if he had a winners mentality he would have brain stormed with his marketing team a way to get the car's name to the public. Instead he chose the LOSER way, because he is a LOSER, to give up and choose the simple way of just axing the car.

The Trans Am was poorly advertised as well as the GTO. I see enough commercials on TV for the Dodge Ram ("and my tank is full"), Charger, 300 to make me want to  :barf:

Must have been my last email and letter to him, that drove him over the edge. Shame on him and GM for the demise of a great model. Throw in Uncle Sam also, for their kind intervention. It would take a Lee Ioacocco to bring GM around. I wonder how much money he will get as his last paycheck, plus retirement package?

Wow. I thought I was the only one that felt this way about Fritz. I agree with all you guys. What is known about Ed Whitacre, his replacement?? Just hope he is more of a car guy and listens to Bob. I agree, just bring back some of the better Pontiac's...G8, Solstice,...heck even the G6 convertible could have some real possiblities with a few updates. Such a waste of engineering development to throw these cars away.
