I've read a bunch of posts kind of similar but yet completely different so I'll just give a description of my issue and hope for a fairly simple issue to fix. I've done a ton of upgrades on my G8 over the last year and a few weeks ago I noticed a new bothersome sound. When I accelerate rapid or hard I get a split second squeel or squeak and I cannot tell where from. I've changed the belts, (a/c and serpentine) and the harmonic balancer. It sounds like a belt but I've changed it and still hear it.I just can't tell where it's coming from, the transmission still shifts fine and the trans temp is good. I'm pretty sure it's not the motor. I'm willing to put in the work. I'm just hoping that maybe some of the fine minds on the forum can maybe point me in the right direction. Thanks for any ideas guys!

could be a pulley bearing wearing out. Take off the AC belt and drive without it and see if the chirp goes away. If so, you know it's one of those.

You could try the same with the main belt -- but you won't have power steering (or power brakes?) and it will get real hot real quick... so i'm not recommending that.. (but i might do it in the driveway, ha).


You can check your pulleys pretty easy with the belts off. Just take the belts off and spin them -- particularly the idler or tensioner pulleys. they should have resistance and stop after a turn or 2. They should NOT spin freely. if they spin freely, the bearing on them them is shot.

I had to do do the same thing on my C5 Corvette -- had a couple idler/tensioner pulleys that went bad.

I've checked the pulleys, taken the belt off and reinstalled them. I've been able to get it to do it again. Could a squeel possibly be the carrier barring?. I'm almost to the point of dropping the tranny and checking the torque converter for issues. I'm completely stumped...

In my case it turned out to be the pulley on the alternator. It did it on acceleration of the motor.
The alternator pulley on the G8 GT is a clutch pulley. When the clutch is on it's way out it starts to slip and make noise. GM does not sell the pulley separate from the alternator. But a shop that repairs alternators will likely be able to get the correct clutch pulley and replace it on the alternator.

I'm not saying this is your problem but it's something to look into.

That's actually a really great idea, thinking back I don't think I noticed it before I replaced my alternator. I'll pull it and take it to get it checked out. I appreciate the help and I'll post the diagnosis. thanks
