My baby (g8 v6) is acting up and I'm not sure how to diagnose this particular issue. When I leave the car running in park, say at a gas station, when I return and put it in drive it doesn't put any power to the wheels. Not only this but my readout shows I'm in drive and the rpm gauge reacts with each push of the gas. Is my transmission failing? Or is this a sensor issue? It also did this once while driving and luckily I was in my driveway and not on the highway. Help!?!

Does it feel like the transmission shifts?

Sounds like the TCM or software/program, when you turn key off then back on it reboots computers and then work fine, my gt had TCM issues and dealer updated software, transmission put itself in park at 45 mph cooked trans,they rebuilt it and preprogrammed it that was 100k ago, no problems since, rec. Take to dealer and check for software/TCM ISSUES,my 09 3/4 Ton van has similar issues and was TCM also, maybe this will help with your issues

I'm a little late to the party but I'm in agreement with Richard Craneum about the fluid level on this one. Level and/or condition, for that matter.

Unfortunately, the fine engineers and/or bean counters at General Motors eliminated the transmission fluid dipstick since per the owner's manual
"It is not necessary to check the transmission fluid level. A transmission fluid leak is the only reason for fluid loss. If a leak occurs, take the vehicle to your dealer/realer service department and have it repaired as soon as possible. There is a special procedure for checking and changing the transmission fluid. Because this procedure is difficult, you should have this done at your dealer/retailer service department. Contact your dealer/retailer for additional information or the procedure can be found in the service manual. To purchase a service manual, see Service Publications Ordering Information on page 12-15. Notice: Use of the incorrect automatic transmission fluid may damage the vehicle, and the damages may not be covered by the vehicle's warranty. Always use the automatic transmission fluid listed in Recommended Fluids and Lubricants on page 11-12.
Have to love these "sealed" transmissions.

yep they said my transmission was failing. They found metal shavings in my oil pan. Ugh. Luckily it is covered under a warranty but will they change the transmission fluid with this fix?

They bloody well better change it, if they put contaminated fluid into a new/rebuilt trans I'd go absolutely sideways.

As my earlier post stated my transmission failed at 70k GM has transmission specialists that go to dealerships and rebuilds them in house, have to say they are really good at what they do, mine burned out 2nd 3rd & reverse, all new clutches,fluid,TCM reprogram, that was 100k ago and no problems, so with any luck you get one of the good guy's that does it, you'll be in good shape, ps mine's a gt and I'm pretty hard on it and it holds up every time it's nailed to the floor, pretty much every time it rolls good luck with your venture and keep informed. PS anybody close to Tulsa in March their having a STREET OUTLAWS taping (live) ,I would love to get as many Pontiac/G8 family their as possible

The thought of a reputable repair shop recycling old transmission fluid in order to save a few dollars is unconscionable. A quality re-build or re-manufacture should last quite some time, but of course, not all repair shops nor individuals produce the same level of work. Alternatively, a good quality used transmission might be a viable option and who/m is performing the warranty work?
