Do you think the Safelite debacle had more to do with the installer's overall lack of knowledge, preparedness, incompetence or something else?
Yes. :)

can an you elaborate on how you correctly measure the glass height, and more importantly can you provide the measurement you got? I am hoping it will help me get my windshield cowl flush with the glass again.
Don't know if it is "correct way " but here is a photo of lower corner , top of glass to steel cowl.

Blade

This is my GXP, original never removed glass

Funny, although my cowl panels fit fine, I found a bunch of broken clips from when the car was new and had the wiper motor warranted.
New clips, now its barely OK because it has settled with no clips over 10 years.
I rested a bean bag on it, we'll see.

Thanks for the reply and pic. Maybe asking for the "correct" way was a bad choice of wording. I was just interested in how you measured the glass height for your windshield install. My impression was that "height" = how raised the glass is at the bottom of the windshield since the instructions document using a generous bead of urethane, which should result in the windshield cowl being flush with the glass. I had a third party glass guy look at the windshield that Safelite installed. His feedback was that the windshield was "pushed in" too much.

To follow upon this
As previously noted, The one windshield that appeared to be a North America did come and was installed in my wife GT.

The 2nd windshield I ordered came directly from Australia fedex to my dealer broken.

The 3rd windshield has just arrived directly Fedex from Australia to my Canadian dealer and it's in one piece, yea.😁😁

So if people are telling you the factory windshield is not available they've been feeding you a line.
Being they are coming directly from Australia who knows how long they will be available, but if you are gonna own one of these cars for a long time you might want to invest in one.

I didn't go through the entire thread again but did you buy this or did it go through your insurance company?

First windshield was ordered from a local dealer by the glass company that replaced the windshield under my wife's comprehensive insurance.
Paid the delectable only.
I took care of the clips and trim re&re as I didn't want that horror show.
G8s are not common here and they had never done one .

The spare second glass ( broken n/c) and third are on my dime as with 2 cars, sooner or later , something will happen.
If the factory glass is long gone when the spare is needed, hopefully I can sell it back to the insurance company.

How much was the windshield from Australia and who paid for shipping?

Difficult to tell if such was the planned route of travel or occurred due to a package reroute or mis-sort. Either way, great the glass arrived intact.

Sorry to keep on this but I find it all very interesting.
DOT 654 is on an
original 2012 VE Commodore windshield a guy sent me a picture of
Both my new windshields
My original GXP windshield

Apparently that is a specific to Saint Gobain Thailand number.
So looks like, all the factory windshields of that era were made in Thailand .

I know we like to keep our cars as original as possible but based on a search of inventory, lack of availability, and cost (ouch $600 to 1K plus shipping) I had to go with Pilkington. The rating is supposedly similar to OE (acoustic and solar rated). So far I haven't noticed any significant difference but then again speeds have been mild manner. Insurance covered the cost. I believe if the issue was pushed I would have an OE replacement. I was under more of a time constraint.

To follow up on this thread.
Today I got a tiny rock chip on the GT windshield.
The glass shop doesn't think it will ever spread but my luck is never that good.
So I get thinking, I wonder if the factory glass is still available 2 years later ?

My dealer says there is glass in 2 places in North America .

Unknown number in some central glass warehouse in the US and 3 in Vancouver BC !!!!
He says because of all the action surrounding the multiple orders it took with the last glass, the system basically said " we need to stock these here "
So, to be the hoarding glass whore , I ordered one more. It will go well with all those cowl clips I have :)

No drama , new one came home today.
I guess because it was normal channels, it isnt plastered with shipping info like the other.
Don't know the route it took on its " walkabout"
But it is safe and sound in the garage.
Bring on the gravel trucks !!!!:):)

Ok , as any that followed this thread knows the factory windshield was still available long after everyone thought it was gone.
To that end I bought a second spare 10 months ago .

WHY I am I bringing this up ? ?
I just checked and US dealers online right now are showing the price at 110-120 dollars !!!!!
Typo or blowout price I don't know, but you better try and buy one !!!!

Hey , just trying to help .
Unfortunately the stale listings on the internet are far too common.
If they were still in the GM system for real I would buy from my dealer as shipping is free and shipping damage would be on GM.
The last one I bought May 2022 worked out to less than 400 US total.

For me , just as well as ,
1 - The two I do have I would have over payed
( into the pair for about 800 )
2 - wife might give me the hairy eye ball if a 3rd giant box showed up in the rec room

Thanks.. Finding the windshield isn't the problem. I'm looking for the cowl pieces below it
And that's why I didn't post in your threada
