I never had such problems with one before, if i dont tighten it just right it makes my check engine light come on! I did it once(lght came on before too) ,and my husband got gas in it also last ,and now its back on again! I called onstar for a diagonistic ,and it showed the same thing again!!!!!!! That is so irritating! I hate that annoying ding ,and i cant start my car with my remote! Anyone else have such trouble. I guess i'll have to make sure i pay extra attention when i fill up my car each time! Takes a few times to start the car for the light to go away!:whine:

Yeah, it's a pesky little thing. Just make sure it's on good and tight! Mine comes on at least 2x a month. Blame it on global warming and left wing cry babies who wanna save the planet.......

I may do that! Thanks

I just took my car in on Monday to try and fix the problem. I recently took a road trip and the gas cap light came on almost every morning. I was not getting gas every day so it was not "operator error" I have also had it come on before the trip randomly while I was driving. Every time it would go away on its own while I driving. All the dealership did was "clear the code" and tighten the gas cap. Guess I'm just gonna have to deal with the light coming on randomly.

I got it the other day, had the car for a grand total of 2 days and my Check engine light came on. I nearly shat my pants, Onstar lady told me to make sure it clicks twice when I put it back on after a fill up.......LOL

I haven't had the problem, but isn't there a "new" gas cap out there that the dealership can order for those having this problem? That's just kinda what I've understood or assumed from reading various threads about this problem.

Yes, there is a new gas cap and yes it permanently fixes the problem. It took the dealer a month to get mine. Zero problems since.

dealership finally got my replacement gas cap in (3 weeks) Hopefully this will fix the problem of the check engine light, just wondering why they don't replace the filler neck(new) along with the new cap.Just a thought.

I have a replacement filler neck and gas cap waiting for me @ the dealer as we speak. The goofy thing is that since they ordered my replacement parts (2-3 weeks ago), the light hasn't come on once!!

For newer members/owners gas cap check engine light is very common. It can be fixed with a new gas cap from your dealer.

Anyone buy a new gas cap online? Tired of going to dealer...seems like a gas cap wouldn't be too expensive.

Well i just took my car back to the dealer today for the same thing, so far it's happen twice in 2wks of me owning the car. So there she's sit. I never read about this prior until I both the car but if would had known then I would have made them replace the cap from day one.

I had the problem twice in a row, but then Ive apparently learned how to screw it on right, because i havent had it for months. Im afraid everytime its time to put it back on still though. I dont know what im doing right, all i can remember is from the times i was messing up was that little string that attaches to the cap was getting all tangled up and was spinning along with the cap when i was putting it on.

Who knows though, i hate that gas cap, its so cheap haha.

Well i got the word from the dealer today that they will have to order another gas cap as well as the gas tube(something like that) but he told me that the car it's fine to drive and I can come a pick it up but as I sit and thought about it I was like HELL NO. I told I'm not taking any chances because you never now, something else could go wrong and then they will blame it on me. I being there done that. So, I told them to keep the car until the parts come in and call me when it's fix. Now, i do have that loaner deal so tomorrow i'm going to swing by and pick up my loaner. But the funny things is, that I receive a survey from the first time they work on the car, but it's was sent to me home in NC(military) in which i recieve a call from the dealership the other day about the services, well what do they think i'm going to up down now. And the lady, told me that still fill it out even though I had to return it for the same problem. Well, my reply isn't going to to pleasant.

The new gas cap they gave me says to make sure it clicks three times. It's taken some getting used to as my BMW was supposed to be only 1 click. This is the first car I've ever had evaporative emissions check engine light related issues.

I've had the problem twice now @ 2500 mi., and have gone thru the same things: tighten cap, onstar, etc. Fortunately I was driving near my dealer so I stopped in to get it on record. I want to make sure that if they tell me to go ahead and drive it with the check engine light on, it will be on them. I will tell them to order me the new cap as well. Don't know what I'd do if I was on a road trip in the middle of nowhere and the CEL came on...

New cap yesterday. Hopefully that does the trick.

While it was on order for a week, I took a key to the old one, and pried up slightly on the seal, all the way around. When I reinstalled it, the CEL went away a few hours later, and never came back.

The gas cap on our cars is a real pain in the butt. Several times a month I get the CEL. Each time I fill up I make sure I rotate the cap numerous times until it clicks and then some. For me to go a week without it coming on is very slim. More recently when my tank gets low the CEL comes on. :(. What I plan to do is replace the cap with a locking gas cap I had on my Grand Prix. Hopefully, this will do the trick and I will not have to worry about seeing the CEL. It's starting to freak me out. The more I see it I'm thinking something is wrong with the car.

Remote Start doesn't

Anyone besides Brandi and me have this problem?

Everytime I have something go wrong with my G8 GT (purchased Apr. 2008) I revist the cost of an extended warranty. Not used to cars that have so many issues before 100,000 miles.

Husband says I should have purchased a BMW :wink2:

It would be cheaper to buy your own gas cap than an extended warranty.....

With regards to BMW's I had 10 fold the problems on my 5 series than with my G8. while I have had a few problems, the G8 has been more reliable than any German or Japanese cars I have owned. German cars are way too temperamental, and our family was very BMW loyal until I broke the chain. I can name lots more bigger issues on BMW's than the G8 has.

I have a new gas cap my light still comes on! the gas cap is tight. I have had the canister/valve replaced that sits on top of the tank it still comes on. Now they are going to replace the whole gas tank. I have read that are cars have bad gas tanks and they leak. that is why the cel comes on. I have General involved now!

This problem is not unique to the G8. In addtion to the G8 GT, I also have a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer.

The gas tank sensors in both vehicles are overly sensitive, and I'm constantly getting the check engine light on both vehicles.

Having experienced this problem many, many, many times before on the Trailblazer, I am very aware to always making sure the gas cap is tight, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

With the Trailblazer, I can usually clear the light by opening the gas cap and using a screw driver to hold the flapper in the filler tube open for about a minute to vent the tank. This trick does not work on the G8 and I've yet to figure out another work around. Until I do, this will just be a nuisance that I already learned a long time ago to live with on my other vehicle.

Sounds more like a "vapor lock". I took my previously (and last) owned Taurus out west and into the Sierra and Rocky mountains. The car started to run like ***** and would almost stall out. When I pulled over to check out the car, I noticed a whining sound from the gas cap. I unscrewed it and gasping rushing sound of air come out, or in. I keep the cap off and drove into town and the mechanic stated that I have to be re-tuned for the elevation or just leave the cap off. Since I was only there for 3 weeks, I left it off. When I returned back to a lower elevation, the car ran fine. Then I sold it after I realized it was a piece of cr@p!!

Seeing that your in WA, have you check this out?
