Hi Fellow G8ers,

As our G8's age (mine is approaching 130,000 kms) what is the likelihood of Lifter Tick? How many other G8 owners on the board have seen this issue?

Is covered by the Powertrain Warranty?

Everyone's thoughts please

Thanks

Yes covered by tge powertrain... issue wise its a known issue, and there has been reported issues.. #s wise, idk. The likely hood of having is is 50/50.. These are machines, and anything coukd happen. Hell you can soin a bearing tomorrow for all we know...

It's covered under the powertrain warranty, but, at 130,000 km, you'd need an extended warranty since you likely no longer have factory warranty left. It seems to be a fairly common issue. Some make noise and still don't fail, though, so it's a bit of a crapshoot. Mine were changed out last month after some fairly thorough diagnosis by the dealer and I've had no rattling on first startup since then. I had been keeping a tally of VIN numbers of affected vehicle to see if there was any correlation, but the thread tapered off.

It is hard to say the % of G8s that have actually experience that failure or will in the future. Maybe 20%??? I think if you have a 2009.5 it is less likely that the lifter will fail from what I have seen and read on here.

2009 (early model, no rear cupholders), 46k miles, no lifter tick.

OP, are you referring to just the lifter ticking sound or lifter tick upon failure when they eat up the cam and what not?

Seems like all LS engines have some "tick" to them.

By the way, powertrain warranty is 5/160,000km, or 100,000 miles. I bet most of us have passed or are getting close to the 5-year warranty expiry very soon.

Seems like all LS engines have some "tick" to them.
And for that reason I think a lot of people have some difficulty distinguishing the typical LS tick from a lifter issue. Mine went south at 62,000 miles last summer, fixed under powertrain warranty. It was beginning to tick on some cold starts - all 16 lifters replaced, but no cam damage yet. A friend of mine wasn't so lucky: http://www.g8board.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1927713

mine ticks on cold start-up. runs like a top otherwise. taking it for warranty inspection anyhow before I run out in May
