Like the title states, does our Brand New G8 GT's Oil Pan actually hold 8.8 quarts of Mobil 1 Oil? Also, how often do the owners of these GT's change their motor oil? Any and all replies would be appreciated.

Yes it is true that our cars hold nearly 9 quarts of oil. There has been some discussion on this forum about whether or not the cars come factory filled with Mobil 1, but I'm pretty sure they do not. As far as how often to change the oil, it really depends on driving habits, conditions, etc.
I live in a STL, a moderate climate and drive 15000+ per year. I will be changing my oil every 6000 miles or so.
you would think they would put a sticker on the oil fill cap stating it was factory filled with mobil one to cure any doubts.i know a lot of big diesels say whay they have in them from the factory.just my 2 cts
Our cars come with dino oil from the factory. If you like, change it to synth and ignore the computer. The computer is programmed to work with dino oil.
With synth, change the oil once a year or 13-15k miles.

I decided with my 08 acadia that I was going to follow the oil life indicator (since i never keep my cars long). My boss (service manager) thought this was stupid and at 4,900 miles we looked at the oil. It was very very black. I had 38% left on the indicator at the time.
Now, since GM gives us this 100k/5 year warranty on the engines and only require us to follow the indicator, why not figure out when the oil is ready to be changed aside from the stupid indicator.
On the other hand, I tell my customers that if they plan on keeping the car PAST 100k and 5 years, that they should change the oil at 35%. This seems to be when the oil is certainly ready to be changed in most cases.

I'm overly anal about oil too in my performance vehicles. Purple only in the TBSS I had and changed every 3500 miles which was about 60% I think on the oil life. High performance engines contaminate oil pretty easily and I just feel better changing oil in a 3-4K mile range even with syn. Now I just got to get some good ramps for her first oil change. Those 2pc RaceRamps sure looks sweet, but dang they are expensive. 
Best way to know how long your oil will last in your car is send it in for analysis.
Everything else is guesswork.
Your driving habbits, gas quality, how well your engine was put together, local weather patterns, and a hundred other things effect oil life and stability.
BTW, oil getting black doesn't really mean much.

only way i would waste my money changeing oil more than the factory told me too is if i was boosted. even then when i had my 1000+rwhp truck i still only changed the oil every 2500 miles or so. any high mile interval oil testing i have seen confirms the oil is still fine even long after the recomended change interval.

I'm not going to say anything about what I see or do at work with/regarding oil, but this is what I do with my current and future vehicles.
I use GM certified oil filter, GM (recently) certified oil, GM certified air filter, I change the dino oil (unless required) when the computer tells me to, and I check the oil level on a regular basis.

for the average driver, any api/sae approved motor oil is plenty sufficient, even non-synthetic stocks.
use any well known 5w30 brand you like best, with a good filter (not fram) and you're good to go.

Any special procedure to switch over to synthetic? Would you trust the dealer to do it?

With that said, my new G8 will not go past 5K. Since I got it new, it will be easy to keep track of without looking in the book.

Well guy's, now that we all know the G8 GT's do not come with Mobil 1 Synthetic, I took my GT into the Dealership this morning and had Mobil 1 - 5W30 Synthetic installed into it and I will change it religiously every 5,000 miles, just like I did with my 05 GTO. With that being said, I am a firm believer of Mobil 1 Synthetic's, as I have been using them in all my High Performance Engined Vehicles for the past 23 years without any problems whatsoever. :driving:

"Many manufacturers have engine computer calculations to estimate the oil's condition based on the factors which degrade it such as RPMs, temperatures, and trip length; and one system adds an optical sensor for determining the clarity of the oil in the engine. These systems are commonly known as Oil Life Monitors or OLMs."
Use the OLM and you'll be fine as it knows when you drive hard and when you drive normal and can adjust the oil life accordingly.

The idea of an oil change before about 3 to 5 k miles is not recommended by some people because the factory fill oil has friction additives , eg: ZDDP ( Zinc Di Ethyl Di thio Phosphates ) and others , to help the engine break in. These modifiers should stay in the engine for 3 to 5 k miles.
There were tests made on factory fill oil , I guess both synth and dino , and both oils had high levels of ZDDP to aid in engine break in and wear inhibitors. Mobil One even has a special break in oil they sell that has ZDDP in it , as do other oil manufacturers.
It is well known now that the new oils for cars have very low levels of these critical wear inhibitor additives. Most cam manufacturers will void the warranty of any flat tappet cam from an engine that did not have a ZDDP additive or a high ZDDP level in the break in oil to keep the cam from wiping out the lobes. Don't ask me , ask the cam manufacturers !
