93 octane tune...gas attendant chose 87.

Yeah, I jumped out of the car immediately and dashed around the car to stop the fuel from pumping. It all happened in slow motion...I was like, "Noooooooooooo!" Thankfully, it did not start for some reason.

Would 87 octane damage a car tuned to run off of 93? Obviously, I would never do this but I'm curious.

Thanks in advance..

Bill

It will pull timing. It should go back to normal after a tank or two.

Thanks 4gasem!

That doesn't sound good. I just found a post that addressed this. It mentioned that engine would knock and that you wouldn't want to push it.

Anyhow, any suggestions as to how to avoid any issues going forward? I guess pumping my own gas is probably the best option. I'm ultra paranoid now... :(

I see your from NJ. One of the two remaining states that insist you will get better sevice at a Full service station. Self Serve not allowed by law.

Hmm

Not really so much...

George, formerly from Pa, now in Jersey. It is better with attendants. No gas fumes on your hands or car's steering wheel. I remember when PA switched. About 1/2 of the stations went out of business and the other half became convenience markets...most of the cheap auto repair places at gas stations were gone, so you pay more at the remaining ones. Plus once the number of gas stations sank, the prices went up. Net you probably pay more. Self serve is a scam.

You're not going to hurt it. If someone did put 87 in it I would just stay out of the throttle. If it did knock, the sensors would pull timing like stated above.

I have had stock cars that run on 91+ knock on different brands of premium fuel. Location can play a role in fuel as well (FL seems to be bad in my experience).

Depends on who did the tune, alot of tuners like to copy the high octane table to the low table so there is no real safety net with bad gas. I would find that out and then drive the car accordinly if something like that did happen.

I'm with him...

My CTSV is tuned on 93 octane, but when gas was expensive and scarce at times in my area there was no super and I just put 87 in. Just don't beat the piss out of it and it will be fine. I have run probably 10 tanks of 87 octane through my CTSV tuned for 93. Never has a problem... But I drive different when I have 87.

Thanks for the suggestions fellas!

wow.

the only place i have seen gas attendants was in Lima, Peru

you guys that lazy?

#15 ·
You're forgetting Cozumel, Mexico. So gas stations in Lima still have guys pumping it for you?

What about an octane booster?

just drive the car normal, no full throttle burst and you will be fine, next tank use 93 and so on from there

putting 87 in did not hurt anything. it will just bring the timing down, lose some power, thats all. it wont knock or blow up. its not 1970.

want full service? come to jersey lol i hate it

LOL@Rayvan....that's too funny. Another funny thing is that I stress "Super" now when asking for gas. "[politely]I'll have $20 SUPER, S-U-P-E-R, 9-3 Octane, the best you've got, SUPER, PLEASE!" The guy presses 87 button FTL! Nooooooo!

hell i made 437 on 6psi on 87oct, just for the hell of it i did a 87 oct tune, then a 93 tune and picked up about 90 whp with the 93, as long as there is a low octane table you will be fine

The OP has a tunetime tune. I'm sure they kept the low octane tables intact. I'd ask just to be sure though.
