I know many of you have been waiting for an update from OnStar regarding the MyLink application and 2010 (and older) vehicles. I’ve been waiting as well as I’d like to use it on my 2010 Terrain which is obviously currently unsupported. Not wanting to wait for news that I could investigate on my own I started doing some testing on a few vehicles and here is what I found:

2010 Global A Vehicles are more than likely going to be in luck, even with the Gen 8 hardware if the same command is sent via the VCIM to the BCM all of the OnStar enhanced functions (IE remote start) work as designed. This is good news as the 2011’s have slightly revised BCM hardware and considerably revised BCM calibrations (as well as other modules) as well as the Gen 9 VCIM. What this means in layman’s terms is that if you have a 2010 on the NEW style bus architecture (Camaro, Lacrosse, Terrain, Equinox, SRX; did I miss any?) You are more than likely going to be getting support however it MAY require a VCIM software update depending on how they choose to implement it.

So what does this mean for the old vehicles? I’m guessing more than likely the older vehicles won’t be supported for a myriad of reasons however the biggest one being it appears the BCM in those vehicles (as well as the VCIM) were never setup for that type of interaction. The remote door lock/unlock light flash and Stolen Vehicle Slowdown (Old bus architecture with Gen 8 hardware) are still available commands.

My personal opinion (and its worth as much as you’ve just paid for it lol) is that GM will not likely invest any money into recalibrating multiple modules AND writing new software for the mobile devices to make remote functions via the phone a reality. I sure wouldn’t blame them; it will likely cost way more money than they will get in return.
If I get some time later (and people are actually interested) I can take a video of me emulating the OnStar module on a 2010 vehicle and doing some of the functions like remote start etc.

Nice info, thanks for sharing.

While it's a nice toy, the Onstar MyLink isn't all that great. Sure. I can start our 2011 Traverse from my cell phone. Whoop de doo. It takes ~2 minutes on average to send the command through the chain of command, and if I'm more than walking distance from the truck before I get in, it's already expired its 10-minute timeout of remote start runtime. So then I must ask, who cares?

It's a neat gadget for those who are into smartphones and remote access, I suppose.

I'm not at all disappointed that the G8 is not / nor will probably ever be / supported via the MyLink application. Oh well. My next zeta will. :wink2:

The remote start on my G8 Sucks... I have to be right up on it to work, then I just look like a Show Off Moron when it starts as I'm walking up to it... I may need a fresh battery in the key, but it has always been a weak signal. I used to start my 07 GP GXP from way father away.

The G8 is better in about every other way though :)

How about some video of you emulating the OnStar module on a 2008, 2009, or 2009.5 vehicle? That way we know that your R&D into providing this for pre-2010 vehicles is right on target.

There are aftermarket products made by car alarm companies, such as Viper, if you just want the lock/unlock and remote start functionality on your phone. They don't cost much.

I was told that it would cost upwards of around $600 to put the Viper system in the G8. The remote start systems range from $300-$500 and then it costs an extra $100 to install an extra box that is just for the cell phone remote start capabilities. Plus there is a monthly charge to have the app on your cell phone and to use the cell phone remote start service. Plus I was told that it would cost an extra $100 because the G8 already has a remote start system and that it takes more work for them to disable the existing system and some extra parts. I for one am not willing to spend $600 just for a longer range on my remote start.

That being said, a buddy of mine has a Clifford system on his Camry that is exactly the same as Viper's with the cell phone remote start and all that and it's pretty dang cool. He went on a month long trip to Florida from Washington State and was able to remote start his car once a week in his driveway. He likes it because we work in a warehouse and he usually remote starts his car in the winter time and even the normal remote is able to work from a few hundred yards away and through 3 or 4, 3 foot thick concrete walls.
