Transmission Failure

Long story short: My transmission was making a noise and after 3 trips to the dealer they found metal in the transmission fluid. Transmission was replaced under warranty. Beware. If you have a noise don't accept when they tell you it's "normal".

Original Post:

I have a growling noise that happens when my car is cold which I think is the transmission. It starts as soon as I put the car in gear (either drive or reverse) and it goes away when the rpms get over 2k. It does it in all gears. It doesn't do it after the car warms up.

It's done it for a while but it was very faint. Lately it's gotten louder.

I had my car in for oil change saturday and I told them about the problem but they said they couldn't duplicate it. I'm going to take it back so they can keep it overnight so the car is totally cold.

My question is if anybody else has experienced this, and what the results were, so I can tell the service department where to start looking.

I searched but didn't find any threads about this issue.

+1, never happened to me, but hopefully that's what it is.

Didn't do it when the car was new. I'm willing to accept that the obnoxious whine from the alternator is "normal" but this I do not accept.

The guys at the dealership have been cool about it. They just haven't heard the noise. I'm mostly concerned that it is something going bad and that noise is something being damaged. But if it is then at least there is a record that I'm trying to get it fixed.

They brought 3 other g8's and showed me they all had them. I fought them with it not sounding like that when new. Needless to say they would track it down on my dime.

If you get them to fix it, please scan what it was :/

any word on this situation? mine only does it in R when car is cold and foot on the brakes or going under 5mph in R doesnt do it in D or N or P...but i only have 9600 on my car its 2 yrs old this mo and i just started noticing this when it was cold out. i put my car in R and the rpms range the same as in D or N for the most part since i thought at first it was an exhuast leak. so now im guessing its the tranny..

i had my transmission serviced and after i picked up the car i noticed the same noise. Took it back to them they said its normal. I had the car for 2 winters and never heard this noise before. I made them drive another G8 GT with 13k on it and it did have the same noise it sounds like a rattle and goes away after the car warms up. I guess it might have been there from day one but I never heard it .

Interesting that it went from "cannot hear or duplicate" to "Thats normal." Do you know any independent trans shops time for a second opinion. IMO

it never happened to mine in the first 2 winters i had it or even some cold spring mornings. its not normal and not from the factory. i thought maybe when the car was in R the rpms dropped low and my terrible exhuast gasket was leaking a lil while it was cold...but since i just changed them and my exhuast guy told me there was no leaks i can eliminate that from my assumtions...so i guess ill have to wait and see what they say about that and my wheels bubbling. but they way i see it is if everyone doesnt have it than its not "normal"

My car's in the shop again for the noise, which has gotten much worse in the last couple of weeks. So loud now it echos off the houses in my neighborhood. This time the service guy didn't have any problem hearing it, nor did they claim it was normal. They said it's definately the transmission but haven't tracked it down specifically yet. I will post the result when I get it back.

Me too

Folks,

My first post, and sorry it has to be related to problem....

2009 GT with 14,000 easy no-mod miles

I have the exact same growl as the original poster, and it is so darned loud that I no longer want to drive the car. It sounds like marbles in a blender.....

The noise started after the trans service for the 2-3 flare. When I picked up the car, the trans shifted so erratically and slammed into gear so hard that I immediately returned it. I was shown the PIP that described the transmission operation until the PCM "re-learned"

After a few days, the shift quality was so bad I had to bring it back. At stoplights, the trans felt like it was slipping into neutral, and when I stepped on the gas the engine revved and then dropped into first - almost like a "neutral slam" Downshifts were also producing a big time clunk.

I suspected the trans fluid was low, and returned it to the dealer. They discovered it was down nearly 3 quarts!!! I insisted that they fully document this low fluid condition in the service record.

WTF??? They do a major trans service and cannot bother to properly refill the trans? I suspect that because the proper filling process is time consuming, and the tech couldn't bother to do it right in his desire to beat the flat rate book.

The growl started very shortly after this episode, and has just continued to get worse.

Based on what I'm reading here, I now suspect that the trans is damaged after being operated significantly low on fluid. Thank heavens I have the paperwork that shows the initial trans work AND the return visit where they admitted the fluid was seriously low.

Is there a chance that we could have a brief poll on the subject? When did your growl start? Was it immediately after a 2-3 flare service?

To say I'm pissed would be an understatement. :(

wow that is amazing I had the same thing I picked up the carafter they sirviced the tranny and it was slipping i brought it back and they said the flued was low they did not tell me how low after they filled it up i started to hear that growl from the tranny. the weard thing is they test drive another g8 and it had the same growling sound so that convinced me that it was normal.

A new transmission is on order. Should be in next week.

Note: If your transmission is making this noise have the fluid checked for metal.

I've already had mines replaced once. Hopefully never again. Turn-key I think it took about three weeks.

Oh great, is there a way to check the tranny fluid yourself? I had the 2-3 flare service and on the report it says they added 14 quarts - hope they REALLY added 14 quarts, then again it was 15,000 miles ago and I haven't noticed anything yet../

No. Doesn't have a dipstick. People say you can unscrew the cap and ensure it's filled. About all the checking you can do at this point. Someone made some dipsticks, but on the price and unsure of it's accuracy. I passed.

Was it covered under the 100K drivetrain warranty? Buying an extended warranty is starting to look better and better.....
