Warped rotors...from the dealer?!?!

On a drive yesterday, I noticed that the wheel definitely does a little shimmy-ing when I brake slightly at high speed. I know that this usually means the front rotors are warped. There is no way that I caused this damage in ~700 miles of easy-to-moderate driving.

It just amazes me that the car would come from the dealer like this. I hve no idea how this could have happened, since I bought the car with 30 miles on it, and I put 12 of those on myself.

Any thoughts?

I've had similar symptoms when braking at high speed from several new cars including my G8, but it gradually went away after a couple thousand miles. It might be caused by uneven rotor rusting when cars sit on the dealer lots for months.

Interesting point. Hadn't thought of that.

I'll bring it up to the dealer anyway and see what they say.

I guess I posted this thread because I was really interested in someone confirming (or not) my point about how it is impossible for me to do this to my car in <1000 miles. I've heard of warping occurring on rotors that are way past their prime, but this seems very unusual.

The push back on the pedal comes from thickness variations in the rotor from uneven deposits of pad material or like PaFromFL said rust. When youre on the brakes hard on the street and come to a stoplight and hold the brake pedal down you are transferring all the pad material on to one spot on the rotor. Over time you will get spot that build up more than others and thats where the pedal pulsation comes from.

Contrary to popular belief rotors don't warp. So in your case the problem might be caused from something else.

Good post. As mentioned, I have not done any hard braking purposely, so it may be the rust issue.

Either way, I'll have the dealer take a look and check alignment as well.

Just an aside - why are the G8's rotors soooo rusty? Almost every G8 i've seen has had really rusty rotors. I have a 2005 Honda van whose rotors are squeaky clean. Seriously, what's up with that?

i had the same thing at 2k, and they said that a break in of the brakes was not done properly. they did said break in, and it went away, then about another 1k later, it came back. so i went back, and they turned the rotors for me, no charge. and this wasnt even at the dealership that i had purchased the car from. check around, they shouldnt charge you to anything to fix this on a new car. i believe it was a brake brandishing procedure or something like that.

Mine had the same condition right from when I picked the car up. Took it in and complained and they turned all four rotors, stating there was slight run-out on all of them. After having the rotors turned I have zero pulsation, I picked my car up with only 15 or 20 miles on it so I doubt it was ever abused causing the rotors to warp. I'm more inclined to believe they weren't true from manufacturing or they developed runout from sitting (i.e. from corrosion).

Exact same story here, picked it up with 30 some odd miles on it, dealer turned all 4 rotors, no problems since (3500miles and counting), I agree with the corrosion runout. The dealer should be able to skim cut them and you should be back in business, good luck!

Don't feel bad...I had to get the front struts replaced after the same amount of time. Of course, the dealer improperly torqued the front wheels back on after the repair, so at about 4k miles I developed the "rotor shimmy" that "Torqued" nailed in a previous post. Check the lug torque every time the dealer takes the wheels off your car.....

My brakes pulsate, but only at high speeds. Normal driving it really isn't that noticeable. Only a tad at highway speeds. 100+ and the brakes feel awful. I have 12,500 miles on mine. Bought it with 8500, so who knows. On the Road course though..... VERY BAD. :cry:
I;m going to replace them at some point, along with the OEM pads that got the **** beat out of them at the track.:driving:
