Poor ZL1. That guy was either going way too fast or didn't even try to hit the brakes. I didn't see any tire tracks in the grass. I would have expected there to be skid marks accross the grass somewhere around the fence. I'm guessing the only skid marks found were the one's on the drivers seat.

Since I now work at a dealership I took some more measurments of the ZL1 hood insert.

And since I have a holden flat hood that was damaged in shipping. I made a paper template to lay over it to see how it would fit.

I then realised that the ZL1 insert would be too long to work, so it would need to be cut shorter in the back because of the hood latch area. So the hole for the vents could start around 10-1/2 to 11 inches back from the front lip of the hood.

So this would be the actual placement of the ZL1 insert on the Holden flat hood... Unless you decide to add the cowl section then you'll probably have some extra space to decide where you want it to rest. The square areas in black marker are where the vents will be.

Hopefully tomorrow (if I have time) I will lay the template on the G8 hood and post some pics of that.

On a side note I did ask the parts guy at work to price out the official GM Camaro ZL1 insert and he asked "black or carbon fiber?" I said "black." When he brought it up on the computer I thought the poor guys eye's were going to pop out of his skull. He said "GM want's around $2300 for it." I was in such shock I didn't even bother to ask what the carbon fiber version costs.

Having a flat Holden hood to start with would make things a whole easier. What did it cost to get one over here? The layout doesn't look to bad I was thinking I would have to get two inserts cut and fiberglass them to have the wider look of the rendering.

The cost of the hood itself isn't expensive. It's the shipping costs that will get you. I have ask both JHP and Holmart and both said it would be around the $1000 area. Then U.S. Customs will charge you a random amount for looking at it. When my hood and bumper reached customs, they only looked at the bumper and I was charged $650 for that. It still makes me mad to think they charged me that much to open a box and look in it, but when they have what you already paid for you have no choice but to pay whatever their ransom amount is.

I know the ZL1 vents look good, but how about using the 2014 SS hood vents their a little smaller and probably tons cheaper probably could find a damaged hood. Other wise if your set on the ZL1 vent, on camaro5 a guy a month ago was selling his vent for $600 and seen other listings for the whole hood under $1500.

Also check out ACS I think they make a replica ZL1 hood vent (extractors) that fit the stock SS hood.

Yeah, it's a big piece to ship. I am just going to have to rework a G8 hood. Still debating on just fabricating metal louvers. Also since I am planning to run a Maggie with my OTR don't know how deep I can make the louvers.

If you were planning to keep your Pontiac front bumper the stock G8 hood is the only one that would work with it. The holden flat hood is about 2 inches shorter in the front and the body lines don't match up the same as the G8's.

Here is a picture from one of darkside's posts. He has an HSV front bumper on and you can see how much further the G8 hood sticks out.

I'm not too sure how much clearence is needed for the maggie to fit.

I personally think the 14 Camaro SS hood vent would be too small (but that's my opinion). Plus I'm not too sure where you would put one on the G8 hood.

ACS right now would be my preferred method for this mod. Since it's lower priced and I wouldn't feel too bad about cutting it to make it fit.

Ok, so after taking some measurments of the G8 hood here is where I think the ZL1 insert would have to sit. The nose of the insert would match up with the lines of the G8 hood scoops.

I measured the underside of the hood to figure out where the hole for the ZL1 insert would start. I roughed it in at about 11 inches (in case if there was something behind the insulator that I wasn't taking into account for).

But it does look like in both the Holden hood and the Pontiac hood, the ZL1 insert would have to be cut shorter in order to fit and function.

Guess I'm in the minitory as I'm not feeling it at all. Not one bit. Love our hoods already.
Nope, I think it looks hideous... On the other hand, on a Camaro or Vette I think it looks awesome and perfect. It just in my eyes doesn't fit our car right! Stock hood = perfection!

Agree the stock G8 hoods look good but for me I always have a problem with fake hood vents on cars that don't do anything if they were functional ram air vents that would be different. Just brings out too many memories of the auto parts stick on scoops. For me I will do a second hood so I have both stock hood for winter modified hood for summer.

I believe that it is designed to re-route water towards the front of the engine compartment above the radiator away from anything important. Was looking at an aftermarket ZL1 insert and it was in the product description.

Well, I haven't done anything yet.

Hoping by next week to talk to a guy whom my co-worker is friends with. Apparently he works at a auto body shop that does custom work (I have seen pictures of bumpers he has customized by plastic welding and they are amazing). I'm hoping he can make this idea work for my damaged Holden hood or come up with something just as good.

I'll try to remember to ask if he thinks he could do it on the Pontiac hood.
