Drag Radial Question

I went out and bought a set of Drag Radials in 275 40 17 and mounted them on 17 x 9 ws6 wheels.

My car currently has Holden GTS Wheels in 20 x 8 / 20 x 9.5 rear.

When I set the drag tire / wheel combo next to the holden wheels they are about 1.0-1.5" shorter in overall height.

I have not run the drag radials yet and can return them for a different size if this is too much of a variance. What are your suggestions on this? I looked for 18" Drag Radials and 19" DR and they are non-existant.

Help! Any info would help. I have a big race this weekend and want to put the power down.

Would it be a better solution to replace the wheels and tires up from to closer match the WS6 Wheels? If so what have people done? Wheel size to fit over a GXP Brembo Brake setup and tire size would help.

Thanks!

Honestly I prefer the shorter tire with our stock 2.92 gearing. Really puts the RPMS in a good range throughout the 1/4mile and seems to make the car pull a little bit better, almost like it has 3.27 gears

I run 275/40/17 Nitto NT05R's and I have no problem hooking. Cut a 1.6 60' on them

If you run a shorter tire should you not retune the car to the new rear gear ratio that it has effectively created? Wouldn't it throw your shift points out of whack.

There is a little error allowed in the calibration so you can run 1 size bigger or smaller tires without too much problems. if the car is tuned, then the chances of pegging the rev limiter increase depending on how the tune was done.

I run 245/45/18's normally (26.7" tall), and 275/40/17 tires (25.7" tall) for the track and sometimes i leave them on for days or weeks. I have no issues reaching the rev limiter with 1.0" delta, i use the same tune for both, but tuned the shift points for the 245/45/18's tires, with the DR's, i'll hit my shift points within 30-50rpm more on the high side, for instance, before cam, my 1-2 shift was 6200rpm with the stock 18" tires, with the 17", the same shift happens at 6250rpm, the 2-3 shift is 6230rpm with 17" tires compared to 6200rpm with 18".

So depending on how the shift points are set up, you may or you may not hit the rev limiter with the same tune. 1" up or down from stock is still within the allowed size error. I just don't know how bigger or smaller you can go before running into actual shift point issues. (assuming the shift points in the calibrations are spot on for a particular tire size)

Perry, why is this so much pain for you?. you should be ok with the 17" wheels (fit the GXP brakes), and 275/40/17 tires, run it an see how far or not you're from the rev limiter. if you reach the limiter, ask your tuner to fix it. i'd guess you were not concerned when you switched to those 20" wheels/tires :), so why would you be concerned with the package that should actually give you more performance ?

I am just concerned about running 20" up front and 17" in the rear. Unfortunately, I bought the car with the 20" wheels and did not get the stock 19's. I wish I could of controlled that. I just want to see if I would be better off getting a 245/35/18 wheel tire combo up front for racing rather than running those big old clunkin' 20's in the front. It also make the car look goofy as hell.

Ill sell the 20's and get 4 18 or 19" wheels. Or if you want to try the same 17" gto wheels but in all 4 corners that should work too.

Rawyzf. I just finished up at the tire shop. It looks like you are correct. I am hoping that they fit without rubbing. We are going to test-fit everything next week.

I went with 18 x 9" TSW wheels 24.0 lbs each and a NT05R Nitto 285 40 18.

Looks like it will be tight but I think it is going to work out just fine. (I Hope!)

Thanks everyone for your input!

Good choice on those 18x9 TSW's bet they will look good. It's time for me to order drag radials and 15x8 rears.

Going to go on a slight, maybe not, off topic. Didn't want to start a new thread about my conundrum when I don't belong lol so I'm leeching off this one since it's relevant.

What do you guys prefer for drag radials? I see some like the MT streets and some say the NT05R. Is there any that are preferable for driving to and from track so roughly 100+ miles that will last or better off just switching them at track.

I can only speak to the MT ET street II's that I ran but they were awesome at the track. They dead hooked on the street too. I drove them to the track which could be 30miles or 80miles one way depending on the track I went to.

I see a lot of nitto guys complaining about traction when they get into the 11s, but the MT's don't seem to have an issue. This is just my track experiences though.

Gonna be hard to just run off with a set of wheels. I leave mine right beside the staging lanes as do others and never had an issue. Plus my back and wrench are all there too.
