Got my converter installed...finally. Its been sitting in my garage for a couple of weeks now and i finally got around to getting it installed.

WOWWWW!!!!! The drive back from the shop scared me. This thing is a friggin monster. And as a bonus, my bucking idle is completely gone! (still have a hunting idle, but my brakes dont feel it)

Cant wait to run this thing at the track on friday/saturday. With a previous best of 12.530 with a 60' of like 2.05 (and spinning on the 1-2 shift), im praying that with a little bit of work on my tune, i might actually dip down into the 11's!

Guess we'll see. Anyone with doubts on the cam/torque converter combination...just take a ride in a G8 with a cam/torque converter and you will change your mind instantly.

Let me caveat my question with a statement that I love anything that adds power to our cars. More is better for me. But...

How streetable as a DD does it feel?

Now you need to get a set of gears and watch what happens. You're gonna have a hard time finding traction.
Yup. Gears! Next Spring hopefully for me too..... :driving:

Hey Speed form someone whos run stall converters of up to 4000rpms on the street as a DD I can tell you it can be both fun and a PITA. The higher the stall the more heat the transmission has to deal with so an aftermarket cooler is always a good idea. The biggest issues you'll have are in the rain and snow cause the car leaves the line in its power band and you spin tires so easily. Gears will only make this issue bigger.

Summer/Spring/Fall DD = yes...mucho fun!
Winter DD = HELL NO!!!!

last winter i drove the G8 and it barely survived the snow...and i didnt have a cam nor a converter! i dont even want to know what will happen in the snow now. I bought a 99 suburban as my winter 4x4 and semi-daily driver to keep miles off the G8.

im afraid to see what happens with gears...my tires are gonna suffer bad with just the converter! My lead foot has become even heavier

took the g8 back home for lunch today and stalled twice coming out of the parking lot...it was weird. I'd give it a little bit of gas at very low speed and after letting off the accelerator, RPM's shot down to 0 and power steering stopped...these were rolling stalls, not stopped stalls. i'm assuming its the product of a bad tune.

i also keep getting the "misfire detected" dtc without actually having a misfire. i've heard that is normal for higher stall converters.

I get the same thing sometimes (the rolling stall outs). For me, it usually happens after the car has been driven or is heat soaked....

It really sucks when the power steering goes & the car stalls.... :(

was it doing this before the converter too or did the tune get changed for the converter

misfire codes are common with aftermarket cams. When I was doing 3800 cam swaps on GTP/Regals, I always had to delete P0300 from the PCM.

when i gt my 3200 stall i actually stalled twice then retuned and havent had a problem since,YET. it could be tuned related but i also havent heard anyone complain about it before.

I guess i'm confused I would think the higher stall converter would help keep the car from stalling. unless the idle was lowered too much in the tune for the converter...

my shift points were much too high for the converter...at low rpm's, the converter takes load off the engine, therefore why the bucking went away. unfortunately, if you have a crappy idle tune, and you start to stall out with a converter, the engine wont spin back up to save you from stalling. thats the issue i was having.

all fixed now. got a new best at the track the other day. 12.149 @113.66!

big thanks to Chris for the help with the tune! couldnt have done it without ya :)

what is too high of a shift point for a higher stall converter? I guess I didn't realize that would even be a concern...

so did you get the idle figured out or did you have to up the idle some?

I'm asking b/c I'm seriously considering a 2800 or so stall and gears..

either that or a maggie...

stock shift points are much too high...you get through the gears much quicker with a converter, so if you dont lower the **** points, you risk bouncing off the rev limiter between shifts.

i did work out my idle a bit. since bucking is no longer an issue, i upped my idles to 900 and no longer have much hunting any more.

hmm I have some definate research ahead of me then... I didn't think even a 3200 would mess with shift points as most cam cars shift well above 6000

I'm looking at a 2600-2800 myself.

hows the converter around town a big adjustment?

have you tried manually running through the gears on a twisty back road or anything? Thats my only concern I don't want it so loose that it takes away all fun in the twisties.
