How Scary Are the Goodyear RSA's?

In July of 2009, I got one of the last G8 GT's that was available in the State of Washington, and it happened to come with the Goodyear RSA all season tires. I have found these tires to have absolutely terrible traction on wet pavement. Of course, wet pavement is the norm here in Washington.

This morning the back end really broke lose on wet pavement and fish tailed as I was making a rather gentle turn into the parking lot where I work. I've even had the back end break lose on dry pavement with the tires wet from just having left the car wash.

I strongly suspect that the traction problem has more to do with the tires than the car. Has anyone replaced the RSA's and found they have better traction, especially on wet pavement?

I want to get rid of these tires, but I don't want to just throw money away on new tires if they are not really going to help with traction on wet pavement.

Yeah, i don't know. I had them on the car for about a 3 days and them put my winters on. They seemed fine. I got stuck in a light dusting and it didn't have any real handling problems. I did however have them new so maybe that was the difference?

I'm running Fullrun (Mickey Thompson) HP199's and I love em, especially at $525 for a full set on the car

I haven't had a problem with mine,I keep tc on all the time.

Very scary, they broke lose and hydroplaned more then any other tire I've ever had. Plus with any power they had no traction. Left nice black marks though! haha

Ha ha +1. Had some china tires that were worse ( sunny tire ) but the RSA 's were a close second. Both sets led to some nice street graffiti though.

I've found that most people on the board don't like the RSA's. I don't mind mine (that is not enough to replace them with decent tread remaining) but they certainly do not have good wet traction with this much power at the rear wheels.

BTW, are you turning your traction control off? I find my traction control makes it so that I can't "loose control" of the car. I can fishtail a little if I like, but can not loose control.

The Michelin Pilot sport A/S plus tires have great all around traction.

Yep, I agree, the RSA were the worst tire I had ever felt on any car I have driven. It's hard to believe they are as expensive as they are. Dallas got a week of ice and snow back durring the Super Bowl week an the RSAs were SUPER SCARY!! I got a set of Hankooks the next week!

How do you like the Hankooks................Im thinking of going with a set of them? Any problems?

Only drove with the Potenzas for a month then then bought my Continental Extreme DWS so no drive time with the RSA's... but I have a hard time getting them to spin with the stock power and no TCS.

I had a set of half-used Goodyear RS-A tires on my 18 inch winter wheels for a week before I threw them away and replaced them with Michelin Pilot Sport AS Plus tires. The Michelins are ten times better in wet weather.

They are all-season tires. Translation: They don't do any one thing well.
A dedicated summer tire has better dry traction.
A dedicated winter tire has bet wet and snow traction.

For a compromise they do their job with proper driving technique.

If you have the money and means, get a tire to suit your application.

They're crap in the rain, don't have good handling in the dry. Only good thing about them is they have a really high treadwear rating.

I run dedicated winters and summers. Haven't looked back, both sets of tires are lightyears beyond what the RSAs got me.

Also, they're **** in the snow. Yeah you can get around with them, but don't try to go up any steep hills, don't drive too fast (if anything, you need to drive 10-20mph slower than usual for snowy conditions) and keep VERY LONG braking distances.

The Eagle RSAs are of the worst all season tires in my opinion. I had them on my AWD Infiniti and they were scary! I think they were mislabeled and were a new type of tire... "dry weather only" because rain they sucked and snow... I might as well have been driving on my rims if I wanted better traction. Ok I hate those tires, rant over!

I can finally chime in after a year. They were decent in snow and ice, horrible in the rain and slushy snow. Traction? As soon as I tuned it with a simple Cortex, the car can now blow the RS-A's off even with stability control on. I am even a little careful when I go WOT under 60 on dry roads because the car has gone sideways on me. Changing to BFG f-Force Super Sports this week due to the reviews on Tire Rack. Reviews of the RS-A's on Tire Rack are similar to my post.

I have always thought that driving on Goodyear Eagle RS-A's was like ice skating. If you don't mind sliding around and you know how to skate then there great. Myself, I couldn't wait to put on a fresh set of Goodyear Eagle GT's. Huge improvement!

I've had the original RSAs on since I bought the G8 new April 25, 2009. I've gone through two winters with snowstorms including Snowmegeddon. I've had no need to get a secondary set of snow tires. The only time I break traction is when I WANT TO in the cul de sac or office parking lot for donuts. For winter driving I use manual mode and start in second gear from stop lights and stop signs. In winter 2009 I passed up a coworker driving an Infiniti G37S running snow tires in a blinding snowstorm, heck I passed almost everyone that night. My commute is about 2/3 rural, read: unplowed roads.

I also have complete confidence in these tires in the rain.

My wife has the same tires on her 2007 AWD TBSS. The first set went 60,000 miles of Chicago commuter driving which includes rain, ice, and snow. When it came time a couple months ago to replace them she got another set of the same.

As others have said all season tires are a compromise. You want great snow tires get a snow tire, you want super traction on dry pavement get some summer only performance tires. Think of all season tires as a Swiss army knife, it's got a little of everything but not a lot of any one thing. It comes down to the individual driver, their skill set and experience.

Of course YMMV.

conti DWS and never looked back eagles were epic pos however the 275 might have helped traction a bit too ;)

All season tires = no season tires.

I can not believe all of the negs on these tires. It has to do something with avg ambient temp also.....I get a better hook up with RS-A's in dry and wet than I ever did with the potenzas....lateral grip is great also, there is an on ramp (Exit 2) on the Florida TP, I could only run that urn at 65 in my E39 BMW and I have no problems at 75/80...

May be I got the only super sticky RS-A's built or it comes down to ambient temperature....

Could be temperature. The RS-A tires I had were downright scary in cold rain (worse than the summer-only Potenzas) but OK in warmer weather. They seemed to be OK on ice, too, which left me scratching my head.
